Why doesn't Big Benjamin know these things? It's puzzling. A week into the attack, and despite all Shepard's efforts over the last years, still there's no general understanding of what this threat actually is, not even that they're called the Reapers? What might this mean for the ME3 plot line?
It's just more bad writing. My advice: sit back and enjoy the explosions.

Riiight. So not one person on the Citadel had a camera-phone handy when Sovereign attacked.

Ha. That would be so funny if he was quoted in an interview on the radio about reports of an alien invasion of the human homeworld. Councillor: "Earth? We have dismissed that claim, we do not get involved in human affairs." Reporter: Thank you, councillor... In other news Elkos Combine have announced...".

How would a camera-phone prove that Sovereign is anything but a big ship, which has never been in question?onelifecrisis wrote...

The Council publicly claimed that Sovereign was a Geth ship. No one, except Shepard and crew, had ever knowingly seen a Reaper before the attack on the Citadel or even heard of them, so it doesn't matter if pictures were taken of Sovereign. There would be nothing to compare the pictures to.

In which case the guy in the trailer would be saying "it's the Geth".

It's not just a big ship, it's the big ship that attacked the Citadel. Whether the Council said it's the Geth or whatever, the point is that everyone in the Galaxy has seen this ship before. Hell, they sell models of it on the Citadel!

And considering the general Council statement saying that the geth built that massive ship to help Saren, when thousands show up attacking Earth and no geth have come out of them...the Alliance sniper could very realistically be wondering "don't know what they are, or where they came from."

It can quickly become apparent that these aren't Geth, so the question of what they are remains unanswered.
If they aren't Geth, where they come from is also never public or widely known.
What they want is something even Shepard doesn't know.
All Sovereign's attack on the Citadel answers is 'they were here before,' not 'who are they/what do they want/where did they come from?'

It is strange that "Big Ben" has no idea at all of what these things are. Why he doesn't think it's the Geth is a good question, but what's certain is that he doesn't think they're Reapers.

Geth.

Geth space, presumably.

Sure, but we can at least assume there's been a general mobilization on Earth, and Ben does mention communication with other cities and obviously has knowledge of Shepard, so how come he doesn't have even basic intelligence about the nature of the enemy?
It's peculiar that Bioware would present the game at this stage as Earth threatened by unknown squiddies from the void catching everyone unawares. I mean, he could have said something along the lines of "Damn, he was right. We should have listened to Shepard. And now here they are: the Reapers."

Sovereign *is* a Geth ship according to the council. The sky above Earth is *full* of Geth ships.
I'd be surprised if they weren't using Husks as ground troops. That's more "geth technology" according to the council.
So I ask you again, exactly when does it become apparent that these are not Geth?

I think Oneelifecrisis makes a good point. "Big Ben" should think to himself that this invasion force of ships is Geth, since the Council claimed that Sovereign was a Geth ship. However, I don't think anyone, besides Shepard, his crew, the Council, (and possibly the Quarians), knows anything about the Reapers or has ever even heard of them. That's why I think the Council did an excellent job at covering the truth up.

Look back at the past trailers for the previous games: how accurate a portrayal of the game and the in-game context were they?

It's also lacking any other kind of Geth ship, and over time will quickly become undeniable that these ships far surpass as a matter of course, not as a matter of exception, what the Geth demonstrated.onelifecrisis wrote...

They also aren't using Geth as ground troops. That's a major disrepency with past Geth actions.I'd be surprised if they weren't using Husks as ground troops. That's more "geth technology" according to the council.
The increasing disrepency between the past Geth actions and these. The presence of an impossible amount of 'geth dreadnaughts' without other geth ships or even geth that far surpass what geth were demonstratably capable of can quickly expose the error of the previous assumption. So I ask you again, exactly when does it become apparent that these are not Geth?
