Why is Mass Effect 3, and many other big sequels, being released so quickly?

ME3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3. All of these games are coming out really fast after their predecessor. I mean ME2 came out THIS YEAR and its sequel is already being announced. What does this mean for ME3, and what does is mean for the game industry?

Are publishers shortening development cycles? Are they copying the CoD model of repetitive 2 year development?
Does this mean that we're going to see less changes in new franchise installments? Is ME2 going to be gameplay identical to ME3?

I don't think so. It was said that ME3 was started almost at the conclusion of ME2, and also that the development of ME3 was simpler because the culmination of all your choices ends with this game, there's no continuance; they didn't have to worry about anything carrying over.

Although really it has me a little worried, we didn't hear about ME2 for over a year since ME1 was launched, now we get news after 11 months.  (I think it was 15 months between ME1 & 2 with the Legion trailer).

Same reason they made LoTR into 3 movies and split the last Harry Potter flic in two.

Guaranteed

Profit.

In a high risk market (current gen games are really expensive to make) you really want to make sure that the sh**ton of money you poured into project XYZ turns a guaranteed profit.

Yes, trying to put everything in one movie would work fine...

ME2 came out this year, but it came out at the beginning of this year. And development of ME3 started before ME2 came out. If it comes out next holiday season, that's about two years of development. Also, ME2 came out just over two years from when ME1 was released, with significant alterations to gameplay. Assuming the development is relatively satisfied with what they've learned from the previous two games, I'm going to assume they have the process streamlined for faster output into ME3.

But having said that, my worst case scenario is that the development team runs into some issues with ME3 and EA pushes it out the door to meet the deadline anyway. You'd think EA would learn from the past, but... I somehow doubt it.

Well, I believe the dev team knows what they're doing. Hell, Christina Norman said the reason Charge had a few buggy issues in ME2 was because it was one of the last things worked on. Now that its already out there, they can refine it and kick those bugs to the curb.

Since combat from 2 to 3 shouldn't change all that drastically, I can see them doing what they need to do much faster.

Its the STORY though, that I want them to take as much time as possible on.

I want ME1's light, beautiful, bright atmosphere back.

I'd have preferred a schedule resembling something in the Duke Nukem Forever or Starcraft II range myself.

They don't need to spend a lot of time changing stuff because they already have the core gameplay aspects and their game engine down. They just need to make more content and tweak stuff that people didn't like about ME2.

And give us the Mako back. Modify it a bit and get rid of the Featherhead plox.

Its because they already have the technicalities of the engine, gameplay design and models etc set up so it takes less time to produce a sequel. Sequels can reuse a lot of stuff from the previous game.

Compare DA2 to DAO. In such a short time, they've made drastic changes

While Reapers pillage and rape the galaxy? Fat chance. Ignorance is bliss.

No. I pissed on the MAKO when I saw its broken shell at the Normandy Crash site. The Hammerhead is superior providing you are a good player which a lot of people evidently are not and want the vehicle sections to be very easy.

I didn't say I wanted the WHOLE thing bright and beautiful.

Point is, I liked the ME1 atmosphere more, and would like to see it make a return in ME3.

Doesn't have to be that way the whole game. I just want many hours spent in it.

Bioware did say Mass Effect 3 would be more light hearted. Which I find odd considering everyone on Earth is now dead center in a Lovecraftian Horror Novel.

They also said it would be darker. There will be points where the game is harsher in atmosphere than ME2, but then points where the ME1 vibe will return.

WHICH BETTER MEAN THE RETURN OF THE PRESIDIUM AND ME1's WARDS.

Would you prefer Valve time?

Honestly, a three year development cycle would give Bioware a LOT of time to breathe, to avoid glitches, and to get more content in.

Blizzard and Valve take forever, but their products are nearly flawless on release.

For me the sooner this game comes out the better. I have faith in Bioware. Their titles are pure gold. If they say Winter 2011 so be it. If it takes longer, theyll probably just push it back to Jan 2012. But 2011 is better than 2012 IMO.

I'm shocked to see someone working for Bioware who has knowledge of EA's Quality<Profit beliefs. :P If EA were to be embodied by a character in a video game, It'd be the Illusive Man...

ME3 being 2 years after ME2 ismt all that rushed....they have Citadel Space made from ME1 and the Terminus Systems from ME2...combine, alter, and make new story...pretty simple.

Before the development of mass effect 3

-story: alerady done

-game engine: already done (need just a few improvements)

these things usually takes a lot of developement time, they already have it done, so It's normal that the game development lasts 1 1/2 or 2 years

My mistake then. I figured that you and Stanly Woo were Bioware employees. You're at least one step closer than me though. ;)

you forgot the fact that they dont allow 6 hour movies to be shown without a break. They had to cut a ton of scenes out of Gods and Generals because it was going to be a 4hour flick.

as for Lotr, it was a cool series but there is no way in hell im sitting in a theater for 9 hours.
