Why is Mass Effect 3, and many other big sequels, being released so quickly?

ME3, Resistance 3, Killzone 3, Uncharted 3. All of these games are coming out really fast after their predecessor. I mean ME2 came out THIS YEAR and its sequel is already being announced. What does this mean for ME3, and what does is mean for the game industry?

Are publishers shortening development cycles? Are they copying the CoD model of repetitive 2 year development?
Does this mean that we're going to see less changes in new franchise installments? Is ME2 going to be gameplay identical to ME3?

Wtf lol?

ME3: 2 years after ME2 came out

Resistance 3:  3 years after R2 came out

Killzone 3: Again 2 years after KZ2 came out

Uncharted 3: 2 years after UC2 came out

How is a 2 year development cycle short? What am I missing here lol.

But to get back on topic, what exactly is deemed an appropriate amount of time for game development anyway? The Mass Effect games really aren't ones that push the envelope of game engine design, which I always figured to be the main reason why some games take a long time to develop.

I see it two ways, it can take as long as ROckstar did to make RDR (took a really long while) and that game was great.

Then on the other hand, we got games that come out 1-2yrs MAX after the first game - like AC 2 and AC Brotherhood.

Brotherhood is very good, and it didn't take forever like RDR.

So it can be good, the problem though is if EA (or any other publisher) pushes the game to meet the deadline, to make the money but have a crap game - like EA did with the NBA LIVE series, until they learned this time around.

or publishers know the talent they have in the devs they employed and they have faith they can kick ass.

What I prefer is that, if a publisher makes a dev team come out with the game quicker, them give them a raise ;) (cuz that would most likely lead  to another solid game)

ME2 came out this year, but it came out at the beginning of this year. And development of ME3 started before ME2 came out. If it comes out next holiday season, that's about two years of development. Also, ME2 came out just over two years from when ME1 was released, with significant alterations to gameplay. Assuming the development is relatively satisfied with what they've learned from the previous two games, I'm going to assume they have the process streamlined for faster output into ME3.

But having said that, my worst case scenario is that the development team runs into some issues with ME3 and EA pushes it out the door to meet the deadline anyway. You'd think EA would learn from the past, but... I somehow doubt it.

I am so excited, I am ready for Mass Effect 3. I can't help but do a little happy dance, waiting patiently for Mass Effect 3. YES! Image IPB
OK, I am done, don't mind me. Image IPB

To be honest, this shouldn't be so surprising, ME 3 I mean.

They said it wouldn't be as hard to make as the second game because they won't have to continue the variables, and it's really only a few months earlier than ME 2 was released after ME 1.

The only thing I'm worried about is squadmates. Bioware can somehow manage to bastardize and ruin the plots of Halo 2 - 3, Independence Day, Star Trek: First Contact, War of the Worlds, Skyline (not too much to ruin there...), and The Dark Knight (Maggie Gyllenhaal invading a Christopher Nolan movie was pretty terrifying to me) and I still won't give a damn, so long as Garrus and Tali are okay.

I really wouldn't call Resistance, Killzone and Uncharted big titles. Well advertised and made some proffit but not "big". Does anyone remember the failure that was Killzone 1 and the controlls of Killzone 2 felt like they were designed by a monkey......seriously.....completely unintuitive and awkward. They were well advertised but that's about it. They created the image of being "big" but in all reality they were quite mediocre.

Now ME3 is coming out allright.....with a development cycle of roughly 2 years which is normal for a sequel using the same engine as its predecessor. Nothing strange or unusual.

2 Years seems like just the right amount of time for a company like Bioware to make a game, like said before, the engine is the same and they don't have to worry about continuity so I'm not really surprised with the Holiday 2011 announcement, just very excited :D

No. I pissed on the MAKO when I saw its broken shell at the Normandy Crash site. The Hammerhead is superior providing you are a good player which a lot of people evidently are not and want the vehicle sections to be very easy.

The mako is much better than the hammerhead in my opinion because I want my vehicle to transport me to and from a place, have some armor and allow me to fight with it.  Not play frogger and jumping puzzles.

The advantage of developing for the consoles is that they don't have push the envelope in terms of graphics so they can reuse the same engine.

QFT.

In fact, when you think about it and you want to get techinical, now that they have the engine in place, they'll have spent more time on ME3 than they did on ME2.  So... Yeah...

Huh?, I'm very skilled with the hammerhead but still prefer the mako which btw was more awkward to manouver than the hammerhead, it was the mako that needed a gentle touch on the controls not the hammerhead, and it was certainly more fun bouncing and flying over sand dunes, the hammerhead is not bad, but it does not have the fun factor the mako had.

I prefer the Hammerhead way before the mako, I like to consider myself a pretty good driver in video games and I can't stand the mako. All I have to say is if the Mako is in ME 3 then I would rather walk every where or find the Hammer head; get a bazooka and utterly destroy the mako with the bazooka. If that doesn't work then have the mako land on a planet then have the normandy destroy the mako until it is dust.

I would say that 2 years if fine for development of a video game, but then again I don't know nothing about development.

Months between release of ME1 and ME2: 26 months. Months between 2 and 3: 23-24 months. Now tell me, is that really such a huge difference?

Typically once a dev team gets into the third installment of any franchise, you must assume they've gotten at least a little better at making the said type of game ;)

Maybe because of the next gen console. Its been 5 years and you know what that means. A new console! So I'm thinking they are doing this so they don't have to worry about the next console. Because I personally think its hard to develop a good game on a brand new console without knowing every little detail about it.

Then how did you get your job? You're telling me you don't get any inside info. from the developers?

The main reason, in my opinion, is that most of the consoles are getting to the end of their "5 year life cycle". This means they need to wrap up outstanding storylines before the new version of consoles come out.

How would you feel if ME3 came out, only to be told it wont run on the Xbox360, and you have to buy the new version of Xbox in order to finish the trilogy?

I worry this means it'll be just like ME2, especially as far as RPG elements are concerned and it looks like we'll be rushed through this game too.
