Gameplay-wise, being a "Grey Warden" seems to serve no purpose

No special skills, no special combat bonuses... I am a warrior like Sten is a warrior.

The only special ability a Grey Warden would have otherwise is the ability to sense darkspawn. But then the darkspawn would also be able to sense them, making the deep road sections of the game espcially, well, impossible.

Other than that, the Grey Wardens don't have anything that's "unique", so...

except you can uh... sense the darkspawn! which by the way should grant you automatic tracking of darkspawn... but does it? No. Jipped.

It's more of a prestige thing, and it does allow you to enter the dwarven city...

Except they also are the only ones capable of killing an archdemon!

You get trippy dreams from Urthemiel! (The Archdemon)

Hm. I would have liked a bonus of sorts for Grey Wardens (some passive ability), as it would differentiate the PC and Alistair from everyone else.

Very true... I was looking for some special Grey Warden mojo to at least make my irises white like in the trailers... and perhaps a helping of 'Steamy Eyes' to boot.

The impression I get is that whatever special abilities you would get as a grey warden, you don't have yet cuz you're a noob.

By the end of the game, the most badass killer in country is your PC. It so happens that your PC is a grey warden. Pure coincidence?

It's like being a Jedi or a Spectre, only without any in game mechanical perks :).

More Spectre than Jedi... since, you know.. Spectres aren't well known for their mind tricks.

In a 1 on 1 fight, Ser Cauthrine can kick your butt. I want to know why I never got the chance to offer her darkspawn blood.

I think you get a few bonus talents because I remember leveling a few times and having 2 talent points to spend instead of just the 1. And I know it wasn't because I leveled twice because I only had the 3 character points to spend and I didn't have it left over because there was no + next to my portrait. They can't be spent on any new unique skills...but you get them regardless.

In a 1 on 1, Ser Cauthrine can kick the Archdemons butt, without breaking a sweat

Not if you're an arcane/blood mage ;)

It's mainly a story device and Bioware are very good at crafting stories.

The Joining grants you another spell/talent point.

It is possible that the Taint could grant more abilities, which would have been explained "in the months to come". Unfortunately, the manual was in Duncan's pocket when he died, so you're SOL on figuring out the upsides, if any, to a life of sacrifice, doom and gloom.

if you get the Warden's Keep, then there is a special potion you can drink which will give you a sort of blood rage, it takes away health but it gives some serious killing power.

Same thing happened to me, I'm not sure if you get the bonus talent at a certain level or something, but none of my other charaters got it without taking a skill book.

Ah but Spectres do get bonuses to Persuade and Intimidate :), in fact, you can't even get past 6 points in either skill I believe it is without becoming a Spectre.

Without becoming Gray Warden you don't even get past your origin.

Keep in mind the story is written in the assumption you are a Gray Warden.

It is akin to saying Being Batman has no advantages - when the game is scaled to you being bat man.

Grey Wardens take the taint so they can slay the Archdemon, not so they can get superpowers.

Like in Knights, when the game was scaled to you being a Jedi...  Although really it's kinda goofy, all it means is you're part of the A-team, and all it really ever means.

You, Commander Shepard, Revan, and the General are A-team.

Would be neat to have a game where you're team B though.
