A Gray Warden is a person who survived drinking darkspawn blood, basically.
That does not necessarily confer any special abilities. You get a few plot device things, connected to that, but that's all. Much better than what we get if we suddenly drink arsenic, anyway.
Gameplay-wise, being a "Grey Warden" seems to serve no purpose

does anyone else find it amusing one of the loading screens mentions the GW's power of conscription, yet nowhere in the game are you able to even attempt this.
Not true, I conscripted the Bandits in Lothering. Of course the cowards attempted to shirk their responsibilities and were summarily executed. So hard to find good conscripts these days.

Perhaps why you do not get any perks for it is because there is no one to actually train you for it. Al is a joke of a warden, does not seem to know jack about what it means. Duncan died before you could be trained, you don't meet another warden until just about the end.

In a 1 on 1 fight, Ser Cauthrine can kick your butt. I want to know why I never got the chance to offer her darkspawn blood.
She can only kick my ass in a fight due to being immune to all the aggressive CC spells. Remove the immunity, due to being a Boss level mob, to being CC and she'd be just as easily killed as any other enemy in the game. Though her high health means she'd last a lot longer then most mobs, but a few mana potions would sort that out.
The one massive advantage of being a Grey Warden is it removes all of the supposed prejudices of the population of Ferelden. Of course in terms of story telling that removes a lot of problems, but also reduces it's potential.

I got a free talent/spell when my characters become one.

Mages with the Warden's Keep taint-focussing potion thing basically get Life Tap, and also a nifty blood-fueled Darkspawn killing nuke.

DA is a low fantasy setting which means magic is not as abundant as it is in D&D etc. Its more like your Tolkien and Robert E Howard worlds. Magic exists and yes its powerful but the majority of the folk in those worlds know little to nothing about it.
It also explains why there are not many magic items within the game. So I can see why your character wouldn't have any unique abilities that would set him/her appart from the normal folk. In the end Grey Wardens are just a title given to a group of people who have devoted their lives to stopping the DarkSpawn and the Archdeamon that drives them.

The books I feel it's most similar to is actually A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. Fantastic books, in case you've missed them.

I think this could describe it better "It's like being a Jedi and using a regular sword instead of lightsaber"

You get special Warden abilities (increased dmg against Darkspawn) from the potion you can drink in the Soldier's Peak if you've got access to it

I would have liked to have some combat abilities and the choice to specialize in a Grey Warden talent tree. Maybe it would only be useful against darkspawn, like Templar was most effective against mages, but it would have been something. Grey Warden combat abilities instead of a title alone. I think the game lacks a little something without them. It could be something you unlock at when you're at Ostagar.

You...also don't get turned into a ghoul due to exposure to tainted darkspawn blood like any other person otherwise would? I mean, there is THAT - kind of important...

you can use your title to gain favor with some people

@ AtreiyaN7: pretty much hit the important part...
@ (whoever it was again): Hey, Alistair is a Grey Warden too... so you're a bit wrong about being 'the only warden'.
@ others... Grey Warden is not only a title. It certainly gives you some advantages, but it seems you'll get the full scale of it in the DLC's and the expansions (like in Awakening, where you'll need to rebuild the Grey Warden's while keeping the pressure on the Architect and the other darkspawn)
Edit: @ Artis: Sorry, but the 'sensing' only comes later on (that being, AFTER the OC-story)

Also of note is the fact that you haven't been a Grey Warden long (and neither has Alistair) even by the end of the game. So all those innate tracking abilities may not have developed yet, at least at range.

Really the whole GW's don't need to exist as an organization. These guys are basically not needed unless the AD shows up so why they don't just create them on demand I have no idea and then create them en masse.
Really, who wants to "join" these clowns to risk death at the joining (possibly unknown) and to die young (apparently known) for what exactly upside - an ability that doesn't work well to sense darkspawn?
In the game, they are needed at this moment and their role as authorities but outsider authorities does serve a purpose - they allies have to be called to the GW's and not to Ferelden or else they're just Loghain's allies not yours.

You're not a badass because you're a Grey Warden. You're a Grey Warden because you're a badass.
The Grey Wardens aren't the best of the best because the Joining made them so. They're the best of the best because only the best of the best survive the Joining. That doesn't mean that there aren't people outside the Grey Wardens of comparible strength and skill, however... like your party members.
