Earth in mass effect 3 - good or bad?

to play, but id hate to think bioware built this massive space sci-fi
up with all its history and diversity across all the races, galaxies and
exploration, just to finish it off like a generic "save earth from
alien invasion" corridor shooter. I really hope it doesnt end up being
just like dragon age, where you predictably have to go rally up every
race/faction and ensuring their loyalty by solving some problem for
them, and then just go for a final confrontation on earth of all places,
especially when the first game set the series up so well with all the
atmospheric and foreign space exploration. This seems to be the consesus
on neogaf also.
on the other hand i really think earth can be pulled
off really well, as long as it is original and not too "YEAAAH HUMANITY!!!!" dudebro-ish in with its message.
What do you think about earth being in the game, how should it be implemented?

hopefully it wont be cliche and bioware can deliver an awesome story. so yes earth in ME3 is good so long as bioware does it "right". in response to the OP i think you got most of it in a nutshell there.

yeah. many people have expressed total disinterest in going to earth in the game because it is just as you say, its hard to represent within the context of the entire mass effect saga. its all about how they pull it off. I really hope it doesnt play a major role though, besides the obvious need to save it, but it should be indirectly, by defeating the reapers, not earth centric, because its just 1 planet in the whole universe.Evil Johnny 666 wrote...
Agreed. Though I'd add it also has to do with how do you represent Earth. I mean, ME always felt alien overall, you always travelled to alien looking planets and all and it helped give a certain feel to the universe. Earth could be badly represented and feel out of place. In a way, I think representing Earth in any kind of space opera feels weird, even if it exists in the universe.

Sorry, but for me, the 'Earth is burning' plot is a boring and contrived one, overdone and just gives me miserable flashbacks to every single other FPS game that utilized some kind of plot in that direction. The Mass Effect series was bigger than that. 'Was' bigger.

I think it's bad, personally. The trailer left me with a deeply disappointed reaction, I have to be honest. It just feels like any old Shooter-game plot, like Half-Life and Halo. 'Ooh, save the earth!' Big whoop. At least in the previous two games it was 'Save the galaxy!', so how come we take a step down from that? True, stopping the Reapers IS a 'save the galaxy' plot, but who gives a toss about the Earth? The only Earthling worth their salt is Shepard, while the rest are a bunch of buggering nitwits. Not to mention there's a viably substantial amount of humans in space already compared to Earth's population. So let's say they blow up Earth. 'Oh no, whatever shall we do.' The human race is more than capable of resettling on any number of planets even then.

i agree in that i dont want it to go in that direction. but it was a reveal trailer, to get people talking and to be shocking and conveying the sense of urgency in the 3rd game. after all, the reapers are coming. Im hoping that it wont play that big of a role in the game, and i dont see how thats an unreasonable thing to believe given the circumstances:)

That really makes me sad. I want to save the galaxy, not only the Earth. That's selfish, Shepard!

I might be reading this wrong, but that quote says nothing about the entire galaxy needing saving.

Exactly. It's like the whole army of Reapers landed ONLY on the Earth and you have to defend it. Why we (human kind) have to always be the most important ones? In ME1 we're saving the galaxy, in ME2 human colonies, in ME3.... Earth? That's bad! Mass Effect series was about exploring the galaxy! So what? In ME3 we will try to find a way to set Earth free and don't even care about other spiecies?- Songlian - wrote...

Also just because it is not shown does not mean the rest of the galaxy is getting a pounding, because if they were not there would be nothing preventing reinforcement coming in from the council.

Of course it should have been implemented. The Reapers want to harvest humans. The best way to do that is to go to where the humans are. Which is earth.BeauRoger wrote...

Earth can be done well but I fear it takes focus from other planets. There are around 10 planets that must be in this last part (And I hope they're not linear corridors with a shop or 2 and a person or 2 giving a sidequest plus 1 guy giving the recruitment mission)
Yea: Galaxy->Humanity->Earth=Weak
Precisely. The whole 'save the Earth' thing has been done to death, like I said before. It seems rather anti-climactic to go from the huge wide-open galaxy and planetary traversing of ME1, to narrow hallways and five-minute drop-in missions across a handful of planets of M2, to just.. 'Earth'.

though i would argue that having earth in the game could be quite epic, taking it back to our origin, which also underlines the gravity of the entire thing.Gleym wrote...

Funny how you could determine the plot of a 25+ hour game from a 1 and a half minute trailer.

Oh, I'm just taking the ME2 approach: Condemning an entire thing based on one little thing.
