...how hard is it to learn the Toolset if you have absolutely no experience at modding, scripting, or programming?  Will my brain explode just attempting to learn?

tip: read through those first two tutorials (introductory and module), but don't try to understand it too clearly all at once. then go to the area tutorial and follow through those that show you how to make the 'hut monsters' module.



if you can do that, you can theoretically expand on that and do anything. if you can't... uh.... well.

as bloodsong suggested: just fire up the toolset and do some tutorials. from asking alone you will never achieve something

The scripting is easy to understand after some time. The wiki tutorials often offer copy-pasta scripts too.

Give the level editor some months and you're good to go. It is hard, but how nice the levels look when you are of a bit of experience.
