consoles are unlikely to ever have those sorts of tools. they just aren't aimed at that type of consumer. if you're serious about your geekdom, there's only one platform.

I would love to see an add on tool set for the consoles, my pc could probrably run DA, but not at its best performance and visuals that would make it enjoyable, I realy liked NWN toolset and played around with it quite alot. Maybe if we can get enough people to petition bioware for a tool set for the console versions they will make one. I would even pay $5-10 for it.

Not going to happen, sorry.

It's basically impossible for a console to use a toolset. You have to remember there is a lot of typing, a lot of moving objects and selecting different properties. Also a toolset uses a lot more resources than a game on its own as it needs to load models and textures into memory so they can be accessed and moved. Also as mentioned, control would be basically impossible with a controller, hence the simple map editors that are out for consoles.

You want to make mods? Get a good pc and the game, that's really the only choice. Sorry.

Only way to get your user created content is if and when Bioware is able to convinced Microsoft or Sony to allow it. They mentioned that they are working something out but there are legal hurdles they would have to go over. Even then I think they would only bring in the best of the best user created content to the consoles.

There might be mods released on the consoles though. That is definitely a maybe however, as it is not confirmed there will be.

You can plug a keyboard and mouse into an XBox360, which has a hard drive and can display on a 1920x1080 screen. It seems to have enough juice for it. Why isn't there a toolset for the console?

Same reason Xbox doesn't run on Windows, have Office, browse with Firefox, posting some message on facebook, edit image with Photoshop CS, upgrade independant hardwares. A Xbox is not a PC. Consoles are created for the sole purpose of gaming, PCs are not.

...not to mention the fact that consoles cannot run SQL Express.

The consoles don't have the memory, cannot run parts of the toolset, (like the database), and don't have the keyboard/mouse that you really need (although you can get around that).

The bottom line is simply that the toolset will never run on the consoles - it is pointless to discuss that.

Well I think it would be a good idea to get a toolset for the console systems. Developing a toolset for them would have the same benefits as developing games: the platform is stable so there's less to troubleshoot.

Bioware should take a page out of Unreal Tournament's books and make the mods downloadable on consoles but can only be created on PC.

Another good idea would be to let console players download the toolset even if they don't have a PC version of the actual game. That way, console players could create and test their mods on the PC then put them on a community website to be downloaded, then go on the website via their PS3/XBOX and download it to their console.

P.s. I've heard that a lesser version of the toolset will be available on PS3. That is ridiculous, the PS3 is more than powerful enough to run the developer version.

If someone works with Bioware or knows someone who works with bioware, please pass this comment on to the people who make the decisions.

*sigh* How many times does this topic have to be brought up?

The mods are not binary compatible between platforms - you would have to create a PS3/Xbox version of the mod on a PC and download that - you cannot just copy the PC mod over.

BioWare obviously has the tools to create the console versions of the mods (although those tools run on PCs, not consoles).  Whether the end-user toolset has that functionality is another issue.

Another good idea would be to let console players download the toolset even if they don't have a PC version of the actual game.

That would be completely pointless, given that the toolset needs the game resources (models, textures and so on).  If you don't have the PC version installed, you don't have those resources.

That way, console players could create and test their mods on the PC then put them on a community website to be downloaded, then go on the website via their PS3/XBOX and download it to their console.

See the comment on binary compatibility.

P.s. I've heard that a lesser version of the toolset will be available on PS3. That is ridiculous, the PS3 is more than powerful enough to run the developer version.

You heard wrong.  BioWare has said over and over that there will not be a toolset for the consoles - it is just nnot feasible, for a number of reasons:  The consoles don't have the memory or the application support (databases in particular) that is needed  -  The toolset requires mouse/keyboard which most consoles don't have - There are legal/licensing issues regarding what Sony/Microsoft will allow on the consoles - BioWare itself does not have a console version of the toolset.

What they have said, however, is that they are looking into whether it would be feasible to create a console port of some of the best PC mods and make them available for the consoles ... but there is no guarantee it will happen.

In other words, if you want to create addons or stand-alone mods, or play with community-created content get the PC version.  If community-created content is irrelevant, get the game for whatever platform you prefer.

Part of the fun of PC gaming in my opinion is the modability. If consoles got this toolset, I'd be pretty pissed about it. :/ And this is coming from someone who was mostly a console gamer. I've recently built and customized my own rig and I plan on filling it up with various games and utilities, just because, after so many years of console gaming, it turns out I enjoy creating and programming more than playing games (usually). I wouldn't want the one appealing thing about PC gaming to be taken away. Especially considering the cost of a good rig versus a game console.

Even if the console got the toolset, it wouldn't matter.

If you wanted the good modules, you would buy it for the PC. There is no modding history for consoles, all the skilled modders are from the PC. It would be years before anything productive came from the consoles and even then it would be damaged from the limited capabilities of the consoles.

Actually I think it is about time consoles start to have support for user created mods. I'm not saying they'll get the toolset, but there should be support to download user created mods using an in game system of some kind. I really don't understand why consoles can't have that sort of content. As far as user created content bricking your console, you just need to present an agreement screen stating that neighter Bioware or Microsoft are responsible for damages that may occur when playing user created mods

Yeah. I would be VERY impressed with any developer who could crank out such powerful tools to be used on a console. VERY impressed.
