Dwarves bore the hell out of me. Imho (as the OP should have said) the City Elf and Human Noble Origins are the best two. While the others have emotional appeal, these two top them. The Human noble, in particular out of a sense for vengeance makes a great Warden. The city elf can enjoy a status s/he otherwise normally would not. The Dalish elf has an excellent Origin as well. Too bad you can't play the mage class and start with the Dalish origin.

Actually, there's a mod that lets you do just that. It's pretty fun.

Though really why don't you see the girl from the CE origin if you go to Ostagar? I mean it's like she just vanishes off the face of the planet if you decide to not help her.

FWIW - The quartermaster is looking for an elf girl who matches her description and you are only at Ostagar for part of a day and a night - easy enough to not bump into her.

Ah. Doesn't he still say this if you help her though?

He doesn't mention it at all if you're an elf, that I've noticed. It's part of his first-time-meeting-him blabber. He'll greet non-elves by asking if they've seen a red-haired girl running about, elven wardens he confuses to be a servant. Rudely.

I always thought he confused the female elf PC with the elven lass.

I don't play male elves so I'm not sure how that works. Maybe he thought you were Pip? (whatever the elf is with the sword)

Yep.  So I take it as it's her if I didn't help but someone else if I did.

WARNING SPOILERS

Just use a rebirth mod (metagame items) to respec your character.  This is exactly what I did to get a Dalish Mage!  The only problem is it makes a few conversations a little odd when they talk about going through your harrowing.
I really can't fathom why they didn't make this a playable class!  You have the ability to make an Apostate Mage PC!  This makes multiple plot encounters have great impact.  Like what would a secret apostate do when confronted with a tower full of abominations?  How do you judge Jowan in Redcliffe?  I think this could have been the best character combo of all and they missed it!

Anyway my personal list is like this:

1. Human Noble - My preferred class to play in any RPG, but also I think this is your classic superhero beginning for Batman/punisher etc.  I can really get to grips with this character and the end is very satisfying.
2. Dwarven Noble - Again it is a classic betrayal, almost Count of Monte Cristo type thing.  Although dwarves overall are hard for me to get behind.  Still its a really good origin story.
3. City Elf and Dwarf Commoner (should be Dwarf Scum) - A very good rags to riches story but I don't really like playing dregs as heroic PCs.  Its just my personal opinion.
4.  Mage - as soon as I finished this origin I wanted to ditch Fereldin to the dark spawn and run off to Tevinter.
5.  Dalish Elf - Again, as soon as Duncan was killed and I got the taint "cure" (how is getting MORE tainted a cure for the taint anyway?) I would have knifed Alistair in his sleep and rejoined the clan.  Think of it, you can now sense Darkspawn and constantly keep your clan out of danger of the Blight while the humans get weakened fighting.  Instead of wasting time fighting this war you should be uniting the Dalish clans for a revolution as soon as the Orlesians wrap up the blight.  Seems like the perfect prelude to getting a Dalish foothold back in Ferelden.

KnightofPhoenix wrote...Had the Dalish Origin been in Zathrian's clan, then that would have peaked my interest. It would have made the quest far more personal and we could have had a closer interaction with Zathrian, a character that could have been developped a bit more.

Imagine being raised all your life to venerate and admire a man said to have reclaimed the immortality and glory of your race, only to find out that he is a liar who is partially responsable for the suffering of your clan. That's just so much wasted potential, it makes me sad.

Pretty much that.

1. City Elf (female is more visceral, but the male version gives you more information on just how awful Vaughan actually is)
2. Dwarf Commoner
3. Human Noble
4. Dwarf Noble
5. Mage
6. Dalish Elf

The best is highly subjective but here is how I would rate them.

1) City Elf

2) Dwarf Noble

3) Human Noble

(4) Dwarf Casteless

5) Dalish Elf

6) Mage

Yes I actually didn't put Dalish dead last surprise surprise. I'm just not a big fan of the mage origin, My first time through it was with a somewhat evil mage and it just annoyed me that Jowan kept acting like we were best budies. My mage only helped him because Irving asked him to go along with it and he thought it might lead to some way for him to get out of the gilded cage.

I'd read plenty of people hating on the Dalish origin so I went and tried it. I to was disappointed at first but toward the end I went around and talked to everyone and it gave me more of a connection and idea of what my elf was leaving behind. As wel las some history of the Dalish. There is one elf who wil ltell you the story of yourparents which also helped.

I've noticed most of the Origins hae little things you can do on the side that enrich the experience.

While it isn't my favourite origin by any stretch, in terms of "plugging in" to the main (unmodded) campaign cohesively, I tend to think a human mage (of either sex) works the best.

Hmmm. I have yet to sample any of the Dwarf origins since i am not fond of Dwarves. I think DAO made me hate them by having an overly long Dwarf questline and an annoying Dwarf party member.

Of the ones i played

1. Mage. First origin i played and still my favourite i liked the circle tower not covered in abominations it's an interesting place and i liked some of the characters you get to meet during that orgin.

2. Dalish Elf. Not so much for the storyline which wasn't that great but i liked the atmosphere of the story it had that fantasy feel to it and one of the better reasons for the character to go with Duncan that didn't feel strange like you were just randomly going.

3. Human noble. Had some good characters and gives the warden some motivation for future events in the game i quite enjoyed this one however it;s one i'm not sure i'd be too interested in replaying.

4. City Elf. Least favourite of the ones i've played,. Some like the emotional aspects of the storyline but i found it quite hairbrained and some of the voice acting and lines were really horrible. Apart from being able to make one of the most evil choices in the game theres not much else to it. About the same as the human noble story with a weaker storyline and less memorable characters.

Why do you think human mage is better than elf mage?  Just curious.

What is the difference between a human mage and an elf mage anyway, apart from the fact that the elf sometimes gets ****tier treatment? I dont think theres much difference between the two - i guess thats why the developers decided to make it one origin. When you become a mage, you lose your past. elf, human, doesnt matter. Youre a mage, end of story.

I just love playing as an elf, whcih usually means Dalish. It has a solid beginning, but it's strengths are the increased ability to RP due to the Origin being referred to constanty and actually feeling like it is changing the world.

This.

My Dalish Lenya is my canon Warden and the one I care most about. Since I was so annoyed about the wasted potential within this origin, I started to write a (loooooong) fanfiction, where I filled in the voids for myself...and which made me love the Dalish elves even more. <3 Basically, DA is for me to play with a Dalish Warden (particulary Lenya) and I hardly play any other characters than Dalish elves...not to mention humans.

Also my list looks similar:

1. Dalish elf
2. City elf
3. Dwarven Commoner
4. (tied) Human Noble + Dwarf Noble  (I just don't have any love for nobles and pesky politics)
5.Mage (Playing a(n) (elven) mage rocks, but the origin? It has Jowan. Ugh.)

Speaking of the Dalish origin, the main thing I would've liked to have seen expended was your involvement with Tamlen. He's painted as a friend-from-childhood and possible romantic interest, but unless you make a point of repeatedly starting short conversations with him once inside the cave, there's precious little interaction going on. I didn't feel at all connected with him as a character. Being told 'He's your friend, oh no he's missing, you're supposed to be worried' rather than having that relationship introduced via conversation and interaction, as with other origins, rang a little hollow.

By contrast, the other origins did a better job at pulling off the 'bestest friend for everest' type characters, I felt. Gorim or Leske, for example. I would've prefered to stumble across the human treasure hunters part way through rather than as the introduction, after having spent some time running around doing whatever-it-is-Dalish-do with Tamlen.

I agree and endorse this heartily. I think part of the reason the Dalish origin feels so rushed is that the time spent interacting with folks, and especially Tamlen, is so abbreviated. A mini adventure before running into the treasure hunters could have made all the difference.

Absolutely agree.  If the relationship with Tamlen had been more developed, I would have been more invested in this origin story.  Certainly, Tamlen's reappearance midgame was the most shocking thing that happened to me in any origin story....wow!

That being said, here's my list:

Best written:  Dwarf Noble
Most played:  Human Noble
Most satisfying conclusion to the origin part:  City Elf (like dogs, Shianni).
Least played:  Dwarf Commoner, Dalish
Most boring but have to play it because I love being a Mage:  Mage

You have pretty much summed it up there.

You now have discovered what it means to be Dalish!:wizard:

Don't forget to be pipecleaned by humans for thousands of years by having both homelands taken and sacked xD

I thought the dwarf origins were all about kicking puppies. Hence why they are so bad ass.

They kick nugs into McNuggets, which makes then super cool.  You know you knew when you saw Gorim walking through the diamond sector at the very beginning of the origin, all cool and stuff, that dwarves were the master race.  I bet he just had some McNuggets.

It's to my understanding that humans are the master race.
They are holding off hordes of darkspawn every few centuries while at the same time holding off the inevitable Qunari invasion. Also, they were once the most powerful empire to grace Thedas, storming Heaven itself. Then, they formed the most powerful faction on Thedas, that is capable of wiping out a magically more advanced race. Twice. And with the firepower to challenge the Dwarves and Qunari to an Exalted March (The epilogue says they contemplated a new Exalted March upon Orzammar for the slaying of brother Burkel.)
Also, they founded the Grey Wardens, which have been the only chance to keep the Blight's tide from washing over all of Thedas.

In contrast, the Dwarves lost 10 Great Thaigs, almost all of their thaigs, and have shut themselves off from the world and their own sister city and have left themselves as barbaric people that kill each other over politics.

Don't even bring Elves into this arguement. Or the Qunari, as they can't get a foothold on Thedas' mainland except for a sliver on Rivain

Over all IMO, my favorite origins are

1.Human Noble

2.Dwarf Noble

3.City Elf Fem

4.Mage

5.Casteless Dwarf

6.Dalish

Of course, I like playing as only human so I never get past anything other than mage or human noble, and so those are my favorite origin in the game throughout

City Elf Female hands down for me. It's so damn satisfying to become the Hero of Ferelden after growing up as a second-class citizen. I like starting out as an underdog, but coming out on top in the end.

Dwarf origins kind of bum me out. Orzammar itself bums me out. Don't get me wrong, I love dwarves, but I need the sun.

Human noble is just so boring to me, I don't know why. I already have respect. I like earning it instead, it feels so awesomely satisfying.
