I have had this issue since I started playing but now it is starting to destroy the game for me, especially when it happens during a dialogue scene.

My game freezes, mostly during dialogues but also while exploring, I can still move my mouse and if it happens during dialogue I can still hear the last sentence that was begun finish. But after that I have to ctrl+alt+del and then back into the game for it to continue.
The game seems to go on as soon as I switch out of it.

So far, at one time this happened, after I went back into the game I had severe fps issues. They did not go away until I rebooted my PC.
Other than that my game runs just like it did before the freeze.

I tried all the fixes mentioned in the other thread here but nothing works, also my game does not really crash. It just locks up for a moment until I switch to desktop and back into the game, what could be the reason?

I am playing on a c2d e7400, 4GB Ram, 275 GTX / HD 5850. Windows 7 64 bit
The gpu does not seem to make a difference so I am thinking it is a CPU or RAM issue. Or maybe onboard sound?

edit: Possibly the GPU does make a difference, might be a nvidia specific problem. Cant say because my ATI card is broken right now

Ive seen ppl have multiple issues on Windows 7 64-bit. I have had no problems on the 32-bit save for horrendous loading times after Ive been playing awhile.

Sadly I dont have a 32-bit OS here to try it out but I have now realized Dragon Age is not officially supported by Windows 7 it seems.

Anyways, the majority of the Windows 7 related issues seems to be constant crashing or the game not starting at all.

My game crashes occasionally but the game freezing and continuing once I tab out of it and back into it seems very odd.

It sounds like something caused by a background program. What programs do you run in the background while playing? Try turning some of them off.

Another possible solution is turning off your nvidia card's PhysX in advanced panel. That seems to be a very common solution to many nvidia problems.

I have physx disabled and there are no background programs running. Windows has a little icon tray for solving pc issues open because it wants me to setup a backup but I cant imagine that this causes any problems.

This happened to me last night, in the middle of a fight in the Temple Ruins I couldn't do anything with my mouse or keyboard, even though I could move my mouse cursor around...the only way I could get out of it was to load my last save game. Once I did, everything was fine for the rest of the night. I didn't even need to reboot my computer...thought it was REALLY weird.

I'm running XP.

vista 64 here. Same problem game freezes until cntrl-alt-del to desktop and return to game. I haven't tried turning the phsy-x off does it effect the look of the game drastically?

As far as I can tell it does not affect anything!
There was no noticeable visual or performance difference for me, I think the physx effects are handled by the CPU exclusively, not sure about this though.

anyway, if you try it please report back. For me it did not work, however what seems to work is running in XP SP 2 compability mode. I tried SP3 mode before which didnt help. The downside is, there is severe performance loss for me with compability mode for XP SP2 :-(
Also I am not sure this fixes it for I have just been playing one hour and it may just have been luck...

try setting core affinity... CPU 1 for dual cores, CPU 2 and 3 for quads and 4,5,6 and 7 for i7s with the 8 modules

I could try it out but with affinity set to one core I am getting horrible performance so this is not really an option either. I would rather play the game with the occasional freezing and smooth gameplay.

There has to be a fix somewhere :(

I set it to core 1, I am running a c2d e7400 @2.80 ghz
Horrible performance may be slightly overexaggerated. The game is not running as a complete slideshow but the performance impact is very noticeable. Should there even be a fps drop? I am getting the feeling my CPU is just broken...

Mufuti...  OS? did you uninstall the Radeon before replacing? have you tried toggling the PhysX off the GPU and which drivers are you using for the 275 GTX?

4 GB DDR2 PC2-8500
gainward 275 gtx gs
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

I have physx disabled and tried a lot of different drivers, currently using 185.85 but hte new beta driver and 191.07 were not helping either, in fact they were less stable for me. Also in other games.

I uninstalled the radeon, I also use driver sweeper whenever I install new drivers, even tried out my very old 9600gt - same problem with this card.

I am thinking it is not directly hardware related, at least not gpu-related, maybe a driver compatibility issue.

did you install the patch? have you checked the motherboard manufacturer's site for updated drivers? how about sound card, do you have one and is it onboard or stand alone? have you updated windows with microsoft update? there's a link to it in this post down at the bottom

Yep, have done all that sadly :(

I checked my motherboard drivers but couldnt find any I was safe to use so I just let it be.

I dont think I ever updated motherboard drivers before - can I do that without updating all other drivers afterwards?

I have all the important Windows updates and the patch is installed, problem exists with patch and without.

My soundcard is an audigy SE, my old card was broken so I used onboard sound but hoping it would fix my problem I bought a new soundcard yesterday...

I really didnt feel like investing an additional 70 euro just to play this game :-(
Card may be old but I am using the latest windows 7 drivers for it. In another thread people posted with my very same issue but they were using some x-fi card so I dont think this is the problem.

Just a headsup for everyone else with this problem.

For me it seems the freezing has been fixed!

I did several things so I am not sure what finally fixed it but here is what I did today:

1.Upgraded my Bios (1.60 for P43)

2.Installed all drivers again, including new chipset driver

3.Forced Vsync on through the driver (should not matter because I activated it through the game anyway but who knows)

Have been playing for 2 hours without freezing, hope I am not rejoicing too soon...

hi mufuti7,

I've been experiencing the same problem. The game would freeze but the sound still goes on. The only solution is ctrl-alt-del to return to windows and then switch back to the game.

Sometimes it scales to a major pixelation: the game completely blurred with pixels and worse, it corrupts even aero theme (my OS: windows 7 64 bit), even after I exit the game, a lot of colorful pixels is all over my desktop screen (but still better than the game itself).

I tried to patch it with 1.01a, upgrade my graphic driver to the latest beta from Nvidia (released on November 11) but to no avail.

It seems to appear less often if I don't alt-tab back to windows during gameplay. It would happen easiest when I return to the game after alt-tab (to do some background work, like surfing, chatting, etc.)

My rig: X3220 (typically a Q6600) overclocked to 3.6 Ghz, 4GB RAM, MSI 8800GT 512 (yes, it seems a lot of Nvidia users encounter this problem).
