There aren't any real "tactics" to use in terms of positioning or anything. Getting in cover in ME1 is usually a bad idea. Don't try to play it like ME2 or Gears of War. ME1 is not a cover based shooter as much as it is a powers based/third person shooter.
If you're having trouble, lower the difficulty and try the higher difficulties again later once you have a lvl 50+ character. After lvl 40 or so, the entire game becomes a joke as long as you build your character correctly. All it ends up coming down to is "how long will it take for you to win" not "will you win" due to the fact that everything and its mother has Immunity on the higher difficulties.

The Rachni are really dangerous because they can murder your squad on higher difficulties, even with immunity on.
Another Insanity tip, dont bring Liara. Her singularity is good but her health is really bad especially when she gets poisoned.

^^^^^^^the only thing you'll have to worry about are Krogans and Rachni. Krogan's CHARGE LIKE NO TOMMORROW, and the way they can heal is really retarded even while being blasted up close with a shotgun.

Poisoning is easily dealt with with a couple of medical exoskeletons. You should be using these on Liara anyway to lower the cooldown on her powers.

Every gun fight always ends up with a group of enemies going head on and going straight through my defense. The only ones that take cover are the snipers. It doesn't make sense. Any way to avoid this?
They beat you right? Sounds like their tactics make perfect sense. Should they just find cover and wait for you to kill them one by one like in ME2?

LOL and I thought the OP was complaining about how easy to kill were the foes cuz they never took cover. I remember how much I hated ME1 battles: hold position in the entrance of the room, lure the enemies in and spam powers as they stacked in front of you. So easy and boring that I decided to make a run with a berserk soldier.
Exactly.
-Enter generic warehouse
-open first door
-send Wrex in to trigger ambush
-call Wrex back
-wait at door
-Let enemies start piling up
-Use Singularity
-Use Warps/Overloads/Dampening/Sabotage
-Use Carnage
-Use Marksman and start spamming pistol
-Make sure to refresh Barrier/Immunity
-Use Adrenaline rush
-Repeat from Singularity
-Clean up stragglers
That's just about how 90% of the UNC missions went.
