Mordin wins my vote. His loyalty mission alone packs in a ton of character depth - his thoughts on spirituality, his ethical boundaries, his conflicted beliefs on the genophage, the pain he feels at doing what had to be done. And he has such a wide variety of conversations with Shepard, from sex advice to Gilbert & Sullivan to the nature of the Collectors. Of all the companions, Mordin felt the most complete.

Garrus and Ashley aren't far behind, but Mordin wins out in my opinion. I hope we see him returning in some capacity for ME3.

I refrain: Verner... commander Verner. Our last hope against the reapers.

Garrus transition from young c-sec agent in conflict with his father to relentless lonesome criminal-hunter is just priceless.

Mordin felt very real too. Jack and Thane were also very charismatic and believable. And Tali.

I'd say Mordin has the most depth overall. He shows a phenomenal range of emotions and manages to keep them consistent with his character. His lines are brilliant, and his backstory is deep. Never once did I feel a part of him was too shallow or cliché. I mean, seriously, when a character can be scientific, spiritual, philosophical, and downright funny all within five minutes of each other, he wins. Not that a few other characters didn't wow me, but Mordin takes the cake.  Not to mention the ethical dilemna he embodies really is one of the most difficult and morally ambiguous conflicts in the series.

I'd also like to add how impressed I was with how Liara (after LotSB), Tali, Garrus, and Wrex developed.  The way they changed honestly made it feel like two years had passed.  I was so proud of how much they grew up! *wipes away tear*

Grunt is probably the most completely fleshed out of all the characters simply because there isn't much to flesh out. That aside.... I like he found a reason to care about the krogan but he'll always be more interested in violence than anything else (at least in the immediate future).

Jack's story is pretty deep but once you get past her childhood trauma I got the impression it was mostly mayhem and betrayal. Future-wise? She's her own biggest obstacle. She can either keep looking for vengeance and killing or find something meaningful. The fact that Shepard needs to be an LI (and not just a friend) in order to help her long term doesn't bode well I fear.

Ashley's story has a great deal of depth, talking about her family's roots in the Alliance, her sisters, her religious faith, even training in the same boot camp Shepard did. Add onto the events of ME1, her Cameo in ME2, and whatever happens in ME3 and you have a well-written deep character with a lot of room to grow.

Liara
- There's a lot of room for backstory there but even more potential for a long-long life. Maybe drop hints here and now of her past and keep her a cornerstone in the ME universe and there will be a lot of depth for her character development. For example the role she played in retrieving Shepard's body.

Wrex
. his backstory is pretty told and though it's interesting the only thing left to solve is maybe a reunion between him and Aria - which would be awkward at best. Other than that his legacy is uniting the clans and beginning the reform of the krogan people to hopefully become more accepted in the wider galactic community someday.

Kaidan, I like the guy but not a lot of backstory and I found him to be less deep than Ashley. He may rebound in ME3 but I'm not holding my breath.

Garrus, is my boy. He has one of the most pronounced and one of the deepest internal conflicts out of all the Mass Effect characters: where's the line between justice and vengeance? How far can you go before you turn into the thing you hate most? Where's the line between right and wrong? And ultimately learning to forgive himself for his mistakes and learning to stop blaming himself for events he had no control over. Good backstory: the model turian who is his father and the rebel son. Really can't say enough about the character, one of my all time favorites.

Tali, my kid sister. A lot of her back story ties into the history of the quarian people which BW used for several ME1 codex entries (I have MANY fond memories of her going on and on and on and on and on about her people in the SR-1's engine room). In ME2 BW did better by giving her one of the deepest and emotional loyalty missions of the game. Given her role with the flotilla and her people her future is pretty robust given the different routes BW could take.

Jacob - I like the character but as for depth? There are very few Mass Effect characters who DON'T have parental issues. Individually its pretty impressive but when compared to the other characters and no real interest to engage his remaining family? BW could do better with him an ME3.

Mordin - I have yet to meet a person who doesn't like this guy. He sings, he's funny, he's like a hampster on crack... and his backstory with the STG and the Genophage is very extensive. Like Garrus his morality is thrown into conflict when he realizes the full consequences of the genophage on his loyalty quest. easily one of the most powerful moments in the whole game. Unfortunately given he is already reaching his full lifespan I'm not sure how much time we'll have left with him.

Samara - she goes into depth about some of her history (though given her years I doubt it well ever be fully told). Still a lot of room for fanfiction if one had a mind for it and some of the funnest moments in the game where when Shepard sought Morinth out in the "VIP" section. A deep character with an interesting role as a justicar but it seems like her story is pretty much told at this point.

Morinth - **** is a freak, end of story.

Thane - I think BW created him with the very word "deep" in mind. It's great his legacy will live on in Kolyat but he is running out of time. Maybe one last great fight with the reapers and some time with his son but then? Very deep very well written character, I just wish we had more time with him.

Legion - You just never know what to expect from him, you really don't. At times he's so simple in nature but at others he's so complex it makes your head spin. Lot of story left to tell and like Tali he will definitely have a role in shaping his people's future.

Zaeed - Grr! Revenge! Nasty! Jaded, bitter, old guy with a penchant for boring you with old war stories. He's looking for a way out, that's his whole reason for being in ME2. Pretty simple two dimensional chracter.

Kasumi - Her conversations are better as they relate to what is actually going on in the ship as you play through the game. BW also presents us with another internal conflict of just what to do with a figurative remains of a loved one while at the same time those remains having potentially catastrophic consequences. You might relate it to Pandora's Box. What is also refreshing about her character is that she's not out for revenge on Hock, she just wants Kagie's greybox. Very deep and definitely room to grow.

Miranda - Like Jack she is SO controversial. The difference is you can share a real friendship with her if you wanted. As the lead female its natural that her storyline is one of the deepest (and most extensive) out of all the ME2 characters. Like Garrus we once more are presented with just what can you blame yourself for? She thinks the only thing she can attribute to her own are her mistakes (and ****es about it constantly until Shepard finally manages to convince her she is human). Her loyalty mission is very deep and we see more snippets of her personal desires in the LotSB DLC. Very complex character, the complete opposite to Ashley but sharing a few key traits with her such as caring for her sister. She wants to see humanity exceed but doesn't suffer from "xenophobia." Ultimately though there is a limit and learns that end result doesn't always justify the means. I think a lot of people said "Thank God" when they saw her resign. Looking forward to what BW plans on doing with her in ME3 and over her elongated lifespan.

If you're still reading this I hope you're at least nodding off because its about as effective at making you sleepy as nyquil.
