Hm, I don't normally start forum topics but what the heck.

I keep running into trouble with BG1. Generally, I have a hard time taking out groups of mages (wizards, warlocks, whatever) before they have a chance to target my PC and force the game-over screen on me.

I'm currently up to Chapter 5 and working on investigating the Iron Throne in Baldur's Gate. My party is: Minsc, Dynaheir, Quayle, Kivan, Imoen, and myself (chaotic good ranger). I still have access to most other characters aside from Edwin who met an untimely end at the Gnoll Stronghold. Any general pointers for taking out mages would be nice. I'm playing on the default difficulty level, if that helps any.

I usually succeed with focus ranged fire. They may survive 1 or 2 missiles, but it severely hampers their spellcasting. To make even more use of this tactic, a scout can be sent ahead so you know exactly where to position your party members to open the battle with 1 or even 2 enemy mages already dead.

Use your mages with wands of fire or fireball, another party member can use the necklace of missiles from the carnival area. The rest can use ranged missiles. If you use poisoned arrows (or any other poison) against mages, it disprupts their spellcasting, so always have a few in reserve.

Web also stops spellcasting.

Potions of magic resistance or blocking also help, but be sure to save some of these for the end of the game.

Summoning creatures in front of the mages often means that the mages will target the creatures instead of your party. So stock up on Wands of summoning and/or the Animate dead spell.

Another tactic is simply moving your party into the fog of war, or leaving the room, and rest. Upon returning the enemy mage's defenses will be gone.

In BG1, the wizard's only defense is Mirror image. This can be easily countered with Magic missile.

In BG2, things will get a lot more complicated since mages will cast numerous defensive spells to protect themselves.

The best way I've had of defeating magic casters is to strike the first blow(s)- magical, ranged, or coming in and backstabbing, then running around a corner to hide before they can target sufficiently. Then you don't have to worry about Mirror Image or anything else because they're down before they can start the fight. If you know they're going to try to kill you anyway, why let them come right up to you where you can't run?

The next best thing is anything that disrupts a mage or cleric mid-casting since they're only powerful if they can get off a spell. Mages won't kill you with their staff or dagger (though clerics can do well with a morning star). Simply hitting them hard enough does it, but also poison arrows/ bolts/ stones, Melf's Acid Arrow, anything that delivers damage over several rounds. Magic Missile is a great disrupter, almost always works IF you can cast it faster than they're casting and during their casting (and if they're not also casting Magic Missile at you since then it will be whoever started casting first and how fast the missiles fly). I've heard about Blindness or Silence spells disabling them, but they always seem to make their saves when I try it so I usually try destroying them rather than disabling them.

If you're going to be unable to disrupt them sufficiently, the tactic mentioned before about putting summoned creatures in to distract works, but also if you charm one of their lackeys (or anyone or anything else charmable) and send them up in front of you to take the blows as well as help fight them (which is always funny). Charm is a 1st level spell too. You can also use the same defense of Mirror Image that they're using- very good against Melf's Acid Arrow or single-shot blasts, even Magic Missile if they're aren't enough missiles to knock out all your images. Otherwise if you know how they're going to hit you- lightning, fireballs, cold blasts, etc.- you could use potions (or spells?) on the party or on your tank that counter those particular effects. Of course you only know that after you've been pulverized once...

This is all BG1 advice, mind you. I only scraped by in BG2...

Magic Missile is one of the best spells available. It casts super fast, crushes mirror images, and disrupts spellcasting like a charm. Happily, you get to double your daily allotment of this spell with the ring of wizardry.

Stinking Cloud, Web, Hold Person, Entangle also work wonders for taking mages out of the fight while you slap them down with missile fire.

Silence is a good spell as well. Try casting it when they're still in the fog of war, or when they are just revealed. Check the textbox or look for the blue discs above their heads to see who is silenced and who is not, then let your magic missiles and acid arrows (slower, but spell disrupting damage over multiple rounds) fly at those who aren't silenced yet. Beware: when BG1 mages are allowed to use BG2 spells (as per Tutu with BG2 Tweaks, if you opted it), they may cast vocalize to disregard the silencing.

@Matuse: Entangle only prevents movement, not casting or ranged fire. Use it against melee-only enemies.

That's still good against a fair number of spells they cast. Some ranged spells have poor range that you can stay out of.

Plus, mages rarely travel without meatsacks, and keeping those guys stapled in place frees up your party to concentrate on the mages without having to worry about things like the penalty for using a ranged weapon in melee.

Mmm, good tactic yes. You should be weary of enemy archers though. If the meatsacks are archer-type fighters, the safest way to deal with them is usually confront them with your tanks in melee, as the archers tend to be most dangerous firing from a distance (which they still could do if entangled).

Flooding casters with summons or knocking them out with spells like Web or Sleep is always a useful strategy. The summons make them waste their spell charges on level 0 cannon fodder enemies instead of you, while the knockout spells will let you use ranged attacks and take them out from a distance. Either way, you can focus on physical attackers, like the jerk that uses the bow and arrow at the end of Chapter 5.
