ME2 Teaser trailer (We got a teaser Saturday night) - Shepard isn't even in the ME2 teaser.

ME3 teaser was dramatic effect.

One possibility
Shepard is dying.
Cerberus brought Shepard back but there's no guarantees that their rebuilding would give the Commander back a full human life span. Shepard's clock may simply be running out, but he/she has one last task to complete before the end.

That would be a knock off of Metal Gear Solid, I don't think they'd be that cheap.

I'll go with drama. It's a teaser, keeping him in the shadows teases.

Yea, it's just for dramatic effect. Nothing too deep at all

Dramatic effect is a possibility but it's not the only one. Shepard wasn't shown in that ME 2 trailer because it was designed to make us think he's dead. However the instant they were ready to talk about the games plot, we saw Shep alive and well once again. So why bother hiding his face in a trailer where he's obviously alive? They could've shown any number of emotions, or even kept him stone faced if they wanted us to project. Yet they intentionally kept his face in shadow.

As I said dramatic effect is a possibility but the fact that Bioware has a history of teasing the fans, as that ME 2 trailer shows, suggests that their might be more to it than that.

We had an interesting discussion about this in the Miranda thread and how its likely that Shepard's Cerberus augmentations would likely give out eventually (the human body can only take so much). One solution was to have scientists grow new organs for him using his preexisting DNA and blood type. Or who knows? Maybe the Cerberus upgrades won't have any effect on his natural lifespan.
