There are no half-elves. They spurn humans. No known reason as to why.

As said earlier in the thread, it is because half-elven children are born totally human. The elven genes are totally superseded by the human genes. So elves tend to not want to breed with humans because they will breed themselves out of existance.

Dishonoring whom? The stone cold killers or the merciless rapists?

Careful, he's going to come get you and use his awesome rapeninja skills on you. Rape.

So Maric was lost at sea, was he? Good enough for me; the fact that he died doesn't concern me as much as how it happened.

I suppose part of me wished that he contracted Blight sickness and rotted away like a half eaten nug. Or maybe he caught a STD from Katriel. You know what they say about bards coming up with unique ways to gut their targets, right?

And yes, if you think I sound bitter and hateful toward Maric, you are right. I have little patience for men who can't keep their pants on. Be tough, man. Stand firm and resist. Resist the advances of the blond elves. Resist!

Yeah, damn him for being human, damn him!

Sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Though I do have to agree, Blonde < Brunette/Black hair.

A Brunette elf now... ;)

Captain Maric is not dead, he was lost at sea. He is still however, alive.

Today, you may know him as captain Birdseye.

Just so we're clear, Mr. Gaider, the same law that applies to manga/anime applies here: If we don't see the body, he's not dead.

Here's to finding him, a little washed up and worse for wear and slightly amnesiac (though not significantly - just confused as to why he's not home), in Rivain.

If Maric isn't dead, can he come back and take over the throne so I can play Alistair in the next game? I would be over the moon for that. Especially if I could track down Morrigan and make her fall in love with me. Anyone else feel the sexual tension between those two?

There actually is a Codex for King Maric in the game I have acquired it, but I honestly have never read it. You can get it from talking to Loghain's guard outside his tent at the Ostagar camp and persuading him to let you talk to Loghain. During the process of talking to Loghain you gain the Codex for King Maric.

So what does this mean ? Is there a possibility Maric may still be alive, since he's 'presumed' dead and nobody in game or lore wise (novels) can confirm his death.

If he was out to sea perhaps he's with the Qunari people at the moment ? Hmm..

Oh now I see the new DLC :

Find Maric's shipwreck and Diary along with his Butterknife and sword... Wouldn't even wonder if the quest giver is Swiftrunner in human form... Oh wait, that's from another game right?

Is Dragon age 2's name "Maric's Gates? :P

Joking of course. But seeing a hero die at sea, simply is... funny. I will therefore call the king a full and insane lunatic, that made a similar ballad to the one of Bann Teagan and fell off the deck and was lost at sea. A tragedy.

I don't really care much about Cailan and Maric. What I'm wondering is whether my character can manage to assassinate Anora and Loghain then take the throne with a Grey Warden army turned against Ferelden, using Orlais support troops.

Personally I'm waiting for a "side with Loghain" mod so I can stick it to that manipulative SOB, Arl Eamon. I *hate* that man.

In regards to Elves, I figure that their genes are heavily recessive if not simply adaptive. Also, didnt they say that the Elves lost their immortality by being exposed to the much faster living humans and a few of the Dalish that had seperated from humans already were starting to live longer? I seem to remember that, but it could just be my faulty mind.

If Maric returns at some point down the road, be interesting if your story has Loghain still alive...."Loggy, you gots some esplainin' to do...." And as for Maric having a tendency for running around with Elves, I figure theres several reasons, 1. The mans got a 'type', nothing wrong there. 2) Elves dont harbour political dreams of power sponsored by their parents to bed and marry a king by producing him a male heir. So Maric gets his lampost treated winter style and has less chance of being caught in some minor nobles trap.

@Gaider:

I'm necroing a topic cause this is really a bone in my craw. You state your own surprise at the lack of a codex entry for Maric Therein, then state it was a simple death at sea.

Okay from a writers standpoint I'm sure you can see this is thin as the presentation of Maric's life throughout the novels and the reverance for Maric that the people of Ferelden had was legendary nearly to the point of say...a "modern" Andraste figure. Maric and Loghain weren't just heroes but legendary figures.

At no point anywhere in DA:O is Maric's death given any kind of acknowledgement. A simple codex entry summarizing his life and "death at sea" would have been insulting to the character at the very least. Especially since almost none of the dialog from those who truly knew Maric, Loghain, Eamon, Teagan, Duncan....indicated anything other than the fact that he was dead...thus Cailan being the King of Ferelden in the time of the Blight we are given a personal input on.

I wish to express my lack of acceptance for DA:O/DA:A's offhand treatment of a King of legendary stature within the thread of the story, treating him as he is almost insignificant, in comparison to sending the player off on a quest for the Ashes of Andraste, a prophetess and religious figure that had been burned at the stake by the Tervinter Imperium hundreds of years before the line of Calenhad was even established when Ferelden was still nothing but a land of warring Almarri tribes.

To me, while I can understand that Maric died previous to our entry to the story, the ignorance in reference to Maric anywhere within DA:O as compared to the deep focus on Andraste, is like, coming into the story of the United States around...1970 or so, and completely forgetting to mention that John F. Kennedy was assasinated seven years previous to that in favor of continuing to focus on the fact that Jesus was crucified by the Romans over two thousand years ago.

Wait a minute...I think I found the problem.

Anyways, old explanation, old thread, but still something that gets right up my nose about DA:O, even to this day.

EDIT
: If you want to Tweet about getting GoTY for best writing and storyline, I had to come in and poke a hole in said storyline. Only way to be fair.

I played a Dalish Elf in my first playthrough and if Maric is alive, wouldn't it just be funny if he falls for yet another elf who just happens to be her and his son's lover. lol I'm just kidding, people, just had to throw it in there. Besides...he would just be...old, so eww.

Uch. I hate Morrigan with a fiery passion. No offense. I don't hate people for liking her but I would never want to play Alistair and have him fall in love with Morrigan. And...Mr. Gaider...if you would, I do not ever want to see him falling in love with her. Oh, please, no. Posted Image

Where is this sexual tension? you are seeing things, which aren't there. It was a relationship of pure unadulterated hate between them both, nothing more. You should read all of the Toolset Dialogue notes, which confirms this.

I've just finished reading 'The Calling.'
I was definitely under the impression that the baby son of Maric and Fiona is Alistaire.
Fiona tells Maric; ' Tell him nothing.let him think his mother human, and dead'.
This would easilly fit into Goldanna's mother being used as an alibi.
Also Duncan vows 'I'll watch him'.
Through events at Ostagar and conversations with Alistaire throughout DAO it fits in nicely with Duncam being like a father  tp Alistaire and sending him away from the battlefield at Ostagar to light the beacon (which Duncan assumes is a relatively safe task).
Both books are great by the way and add loads of background to the games.

Thought Maric disappeared or went lost when he set out to assault the Black City itself, i might be alive, corrupted or what else there, who knows maybe we meet his spirit if we ever reach the black city in the DA storyline.

According to David Gaider, he died at sea.

And he wouldn't have been that old, anyway. Probably the same age Loghain, Bryce Cousland and Howe.

Loghain is arguably almost 50 years old, actually wait 60 ( considering Anora is almost 30 ).

For a person to live that long in a Medieval Era is quite nothing short then luck.

Eamon on the other hand is probably 45 ( it is said he was young when rebelion started with Maric and Loghain ).

Howe is probably even older the Loghain.

To be 60 years old in the Medieval Era and be able to take that much punishment in the duel at the Landsmeet is nothing short of awesome...
