Is there not a codex entry for Maric? I see that there isn't -- I thought there was.
If you're truly curious, Maric was lost at sea. Nothing more glamorous than that. Sometimes people simply die.
@Gaider:
I'm necroing a topic cause this is really a bone in my craw. You state your own surprise at the lack of a codex entry for Maric Therein, then state it was a simple death at sea.
Okay from a writers standpoint I'm sure you can see this is thin as the presentation of Maric's life throughout the novels and the reverance for Maric that the people of Ferelden had was legendary nearly to the point of say...a "modern" Andraste figure. Maric and Loghain weren't just heroes but legendary figures.
At no point anywhere in DA:O is Maric's death given any kind of acknowledgement. A simple codex entry summarizing his life and "death at sea" would have been insulting to the character at the very least. Especially since almost none of the dialog from those who truly knew Maric, Loghain, Eamon, Teagan, Duncan....indicated anything other than the fact that he was dead...thus Cailan being the King of Ferelden in the time of the Blight we are given a personal input on.
I wish to express my lack of acceptance for DA:O/DA:A's offhand treatment of a King of legendary stature within the thread of the story, treating him as he is almost insignificant, in comparison to sending the player off on a quest for the Ashes of Andraste, a prophetess and religious figure that had been burned at the stake by the Tervinter Imperium hundreds of years before the line of Calenhad was even established when Ferelden was still nothing but a land of warring Almarri tribes.
To me, while I can understand that Maric died previous to our entry to the story, the ignorance in reference to Maric anywhere within DA:O as compared to the deep focus on Andraste, is like, coming into the story of the United States around...1970 or so, and completely forgetting to mention that John F. Kennedy was assasinated seven years previous to that in favor of continuing to focus on the fact that Jesus was crucified by the Romans over two thousand years ago.
Wait a minute...I think I found the problem.
Anyways, old explanation, old thread, but still something that gets right up my nose about DA:O, even to this day.
EDIT: If you want to Tweet about getting GoTY for best writing and storyline, I had to come in and poke a hole in said storyline. Only way to be fair.
