Not bad, but i see no reason to switch from my PC version. Mouse and keyboard work better for controls, and it seems to have some nasty screen tearing and minor framerate drops too.

I've just played through the demo and to say i'm disapointed with the result is an understatement. What with screen tearing, loss of audio, bad frame rates, etc, i hope the full game is more polished than this, or this will be a bargain bin buy for me. I was hoping this demo would look better than the 360 version, but when i played abit of ME 2 on the 360 again, it doesn't stand upto it at all. Hopefully IGN and the other gaming sites got the promo copies of the game to review, and it is these screenshots and video's we are seeing, because from the demo i've just played it seems a different game completely.

Hi All,

I downloaded the Mass Effect 2 PS3 demo yesterday and had a comprehensive playthrough.

Having been looking forward to this demo for so long I have to say I am a bit worried about the port to PS3:

Graphics:

I've played mass effect on a panasonic Th50pz81B 50" plasma 1080p screen with versions on the PC, XBOX and PS3 now.

PC for me has the best graphics of the 3, followed by the XBOX version. The PS3 port however I was hugely disappointed by. The graphics are no where near as good as the XBOX 360 version and the input is only 720p.

The PS3 doesn't handle the motion well either with lots of tearing and artifacts. Overall not very polished at all.

I hope that the final game on PS3 is 1080p and that the smotthness and graphics of the game are better.

Framerate:

PC - smooth as a plained bit of wood XBOX - just as good PS3 - terrible.

I was shocked to see how laggy this game was.

Overall:

I'm very suprised to see this demo lacking in the basics. I'm very much a PS3 fan with it's Blu-ray capability and Metal Gear Solid 4 vision.

Please, please Bioware don't let the PS3 port look as bad as this!

Shady out.

You do realize that neither the 360 nor the PS3 version is 1080P (native) nor will they EVER be on this generation of consoles right?

Check out the Digital Foundry comparison, the PS3 version has a much HIGHER overall framerate than the 360 version; yes, it has more screen tearing, but I can live with that in exchange for the framerate.

If you are seeing a ton of framerate loss then its something wrong on your end (your PS3 etc), because just about EVERYONE has applauded the stable framerate.

As for the game being laggy...do you mean input lag or what? Checking your TV looks like its 30ms + whatever other settings you might have enabled. Mess around with your stuff because I had no problem on my end.

Third playthrough of demo today and decided to try Vanguard this time, didn't seem to notice the things people mentioned about it, but then it's been ages since I played ME2 (bout 5 months ago) so maybe not remembered. Had no sound drops at all this time and the synching was spot on. Tried 'Veteran' difficulty for first time and died a couple of times on Mordin's level, first time was because I stupidly tried to charge the Blue Suns at the entrance and got massacred from all sides, second time was more of 'learn what you can/can't do on higher levels' type thing when I tried charging a fully armored Krogan whilst under fire from a few people and not scoping out where I needed to fallback to.

Am loving it on the PS3, I think the reason why I had the issues I did on the first run was because whilst my PS3 was playing that, it was also DLing LBP2 demo. Since then I've had no real issues. Sure the odd screen tear here or there but hardly noticeable.

4 Weeks till full game launch :D

Much higher? =/

In the Digital Foundry comparison it only ever spiked to 40 FPS when Shepard was storming down an empty hallway or something. During intense combat it's almost always 30 or less. The 360 version keeps it at a consistant 30 FPS almost the entire time. I prefer a consistant framerate, along with less screen tearing. But that's just me. Higher overall FPS isn't really worth it when you consider what I just said. Image IPB

You know that X360 version runs in 720p too, right? They mentioned it in comparison on Digital Foundry. Even Uncharted 2 (one of the best looking games IMO) runs at 720p. There aren't many games taht run natively at 1080p and those that actually do are mostly PSN/XBLA games.

I have multiple picture presets on my TV and it can make a huge difference to the overall presentation, and although people doing comparisons (Digital Foundry, etc.) should be using the same presets, remember that often messing with the setup for a particular source can alleviate certain things that may appear jarring

Metal gear solid 4 runs native 1080p and is just epic graphically. Call of Duty MW2 is also 1080p. I personally think that the difference between 720p and 1080p is considerably clear on a large screen.

LOL no they don't.

MGS4 is native 768P......UPSCALED to 1080P
MW2 is native 640P......UPSCALED to 1080P

neither game is NATIVE 1080P

like he said, only a FEW games are NATIVE 1080P on consoles (and most are XBLA/PSN ONLY games)

sigh..just because it says "1080P HD output" on the back of the box does NOT mean its native. It only means it SUPPORTS 1080P output. The game has a native resolution which is sometimes scaled (1080P) or in most cases native (720P).

About the only PS3 games that I can think of right now that are true native 1920x1080 are Wipe Out (which isn't always a constant...it changes based upon framerate) and Virtua Tennis.

Sigh? Get over yourself.

If it says 1080p then it displays 1080p not 720p, that's what I'm saying. (upscaling or not).
i can damn well assure you that 1080p on the box means a better image then 720p on the box.

Depending on your set, yes. If the game is native/upscaled 1080P and your set is 1080P, then 1080P is the best choice (except in a few cases like GT5 which uses 2xAA @ 720P...might look better, but depends on your set).

ok, tried the PS3 demo out last night.

did they switch the RB/LB and RT/LT controller scheme?

that took some time to get used to.........

oh, and is it just me, but did the quality of the faces in the character creator look much better than they did on the 360?

I was struck by how "clear" the faces looked.......lol

You can swap them from L1/R1 to L2/R2 if you want

And yes, I found the characters in creator to be better looking...but still pretty fugly (compared to Dragon Age creator)

Played the demo and I'm very disappointed. The IGN video was one big lie. At times the 360 version is better, other times the PS3 version is better but the differences are pretty much negligible. Now that the comic will also come to the 360 and PC, there's no reason for me to purchase it now.

I'm not sure if Bioware, EA or IGN is to blame for that video but whoever did it has reached a new low.

At least it's a pretty decent port... which is good for the PS3-only users.
In any case, you can bet I will not forget this. I'm not sure yet if I'll take your graphical showcases of Mass Effect 3 seriously. I'm inclined to give you another chance, but no more tricks this time.

Go to options.  I don't have it in front of me, but one or two selections will let you choose the control scheme.  The captions underneath describe them, and I believe "Toggled" swaps the bumpers and triggers back to where 360 players would expect them.

I'll had to that: Only once in the digital foundry comparison video can we see the PS3 framerate really go crazy, near the end. For the rest of the game, some places had the Xbox version go down (during the first cut scene and one action sequence) while the PS3 framerate was still locked at 30. Again Digital foundry found out that the cut scene framerate drop from the xbob version wasn't nearly has bad.

The only real noticeable screen tearing for me happens when you open a door. Got a few screen tearing during the ME 1 cut scene but, it clearly wasn't running on the ME2 engine.

Graphics were also reported to be sharper (something I noticed since I personally like them more than the Xbox graphics) on the PS3. Shadows and lightining effects were different and sometime strangely used.

This is a matter of TV, HDMI cables and brightness. I once tried my PS3 on a 1080p 50 inches HD tv. God it was awful. FF13 looked terrible, the graphics weren't sharp at all. My friend's Xbox looked great on the same TV.
My 32 inches 1080i Samsung did a better job than my current full HD 46 inches. I don't know why, but some tv's just don't like Sony's console. Some games just don't look good on some tv's you need to play with brightess and color patern's a lot more.

I hope that the final game on PS3 is 1080p and that the smotthness and graphics of the game are better

Shady out.

Where do you get this info?

sigh..just because it says "1080P HD output" on the back of the box does NOT mean its native. It only means it SUPPORTS 1080P output. The game has a native resolution which is sometimes scaled (1080P) or in most cases native (720P).

About the only PS3 games that I can think of right now that are true native 1920x1080 are Wipe Out (which isn't always a constant...it changes based upon framerate) and Virtua Tennis.

edit:
full list in case you don't believe me

Just like FF13. It's native 720p upscaled to 1080p

Look, very few retail multiplatform PS3 games have native 1080p. A good example is Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, which is native 1080p on PS3. I bet most of you don't care about this game. As for X360 it literally can't have native 1080p at all due to certain output limitations, but handles upscaling pretty well.

Anyway, speaking of PS3 demo - my Shepard got stuck in a table and I had to restart it. Duh, Bioware, thing like this normally guarantee 100% no-buy for me. Also, I've noticed framedrops a couple of times, which is... not really acceptable in a game with such graphics. Then again, GoW3 demo was crap compared to full game, and if that's the case here... Maybe, maybe it's worth a buy. But I must see some reviews before release date. Because no reviews before release date always guarantee crappy porting job.
