I'm a little confused here.
My motherboard supports the following processors AMD Socket AM2/AM2+ for AMD Phenom FX / Phenom / Athlon / Sempron.
I have a dual core Athlon and eventually will upgrade to a quad and this is where my confusion sets in.
The motherboard supports Phenom but is that just the name of the CPU?
So would the motherboard support Phenom X4 or Phenom II? The socket for either is AM2+ but the "X4" and "II" at the end of Phenom is throwing me off.
Am I correct in saying that if it is an AM2+ socket, it does not matter if it's called Phenom ABC123? Or does that matter?
Thanks for any guidance.

Check 'CPU Support List'.

you are correct, If the proc says it takes a XX socket and that is the socket on your mbd, then you should be fine, though you might need a flash.
I generally tend to upgrade proc and mbd together, since mbds tend to be cheap.

Thanks Ziegler_von_strahn. Confirmation is always good to get before spending money but I'm not looking for a new motherboard right now since the one I have is only 15 months old! Too soon for me.
