Was 'Bring down the Sky' (ME1) pointless?

Not sure about anyone else, but when I played BDtS I thought 'oh cool, I'll get to fight the Batarians in ME2!' You know, with the whole batarian revolution or whatever it was called - larrge scale attacks on human colonies etc.

We then get to ME2 though and...nothing. Apparently the Batarians are lazy as well as ugly, because they don't seem to be doing much. Anyone else feel a bit let down by this? Expecting BDtS to be the start of something big and then nothing happens?

If you saved the hostages, you get an email.

So yeah, pointless, but hella fun.

I let the boss go to save the hostages, so I wish we got to follow up with that. maybe in ME3

They could revisit Batarian hostility in a DLC or ME3. I'm guessing the "rebellion" is a terrorist group - hopefully it won't be completely dropped.

Maybe, maybe not. Given how rabidly anti-Council and anti-human the batarians are, I would not be surprised if they turn out to be one of the enemies you have to face down in ME3.

What if the whole game is based on the reapers using the batarian's own hate for humanity and council space to aid them in their return. Further more the figure that was shot by the infiltraitor in the reveal clip could of shot a batarian since they are also a bipedial humanoid race. More likely a husk, but hey you never know!

i really don't think the batarian's are that bad. after reading the ME novels, i can really understand their point of view on things. sure they are a little radical, but they aren't that bad. they just feel betrayed by the council, and in their culture, they don't like to appear weak.

imo, hating on the batarian's is based on bias.

Isn't that basically the plot for ME2 though? I'm starting to think more and more that the plot for ME2 really should have been for ME3, including the ability to get Shep killed at the end.

They could just make a follow-up DLC about this but will probably be incorporated into ME3s story.

(Batarian/Human relations and the Reaper threat)

I didn't do Bring Down The Sky and I heard something over the Citadel radio in ME2 about Batarians executing some hostages. Oh well.

It depends on one person's point of view. Aside from looking for the repercussions to carry over to ME2 the DLC mission introduced us to the Battarian race. I think that was BW's first goal when they created Bring Down the Sky.

It'd be nice if we could face Balak down, assuming you let him live. My Colonist Shepard let him go so that Terra Nova wouldn't suffer the same fate as his colony, but it'd be great to catch up with him later for some Renegade time.

I always considered the fact that our character let Balak go a moment of complete in game stupidity. The first thing I thought of when I got given the choice was to let Balak leave while we disarm the bombs but the second he's out of earshot I would radio Joker/Pressely and tell them to blow that scumbag out the sky.

The Normandy might be a stealth ship but it does have some weapons and it should be able to surprise attack Balak unless he was in full fledged warship in which case I'd wonder where he got it or hid it during the DLC.

Hopefully something more will come from that storyline in a DLC or ME3. I was rather hopeful that there would've been some kind of reference to BDTS when I came across the side quest of Batarians firing the rockets at the spaceport and colony. (Maybe even Balak himself being there if you let him leave) Too bad there wasn't.

There are several instances in both games where the Normany is conspicuously missing as someone gets away.  Oh, look, Vido's getting away in his gunship.  BOOM.

Funnily enough, I always wondered why he made the bombs be dis-armable in the first place. Why not have them set to explode the moment he's out of gunshot range, or the moment anyone gets within five/ten feet of them?

Pointless? It was an excellent side mission - as nice looking as you are gonna get for the original Mass Effect, and seeing the introduction of the Batarians to the game was nice

Funny thing was, I first read the Mass Effect book and they were talking about Batarians within the first 30 pages or so, so I took them for granted. When they were not in Mass Effect originally, I was bummed, so, this level will always have a special place in my heart!

I found it a nice addition. On top of it you get a choice of top gear, specially that is where I got the quarian colossus. And if your feeling homicidal you can shoot the terrorist multiple times just for kicks lol

I think it could have been extended a bit, maybe you could have let the asteroid crash into Terra Nova as a Renegade option, and then it could have repercussions in Mass Effect 2 and 3. But I liked the fact you got the Colossus X armour by doing it, it somewhat gave you more motivation to complete it.

True, but as good as the gear is, the plot itself still really doesn't go anywhere.

There might have been follow-up DLC in ME1 to continue this batarian rebellion story arc, but future ME1 DLC was canceled early on, probably soon after BDTS, just BioWare never told us untl ME2 was almost out. Then they revealed ME1 never had the correct foundation for DLC. It would have been nice to tell us that sooner... Anyway, that was long ago, but anyway, as proof, here is some music by Sam Hulick that was for some unreleased ME1 DLC. What the DLC was about? We can only guess. But enjoy:
