Since it feels kinda wierd that the majority of your combat team is
ALWAYS twiddling their thumbs on the Normandy while you're risking your life, I was
kinda hoping that Bioware would let us at least bring one more squad
mate, or maybe include secondary teams more like in the suicide mission
or on Virmire from ME1. This would allow not only for more realism, but
more intense combat as you would also get ( I assume ) more baddies on
screen to even it out, and make it an even bigger war zone.

I created a Poll to try and gauge people's reaciton to this idea here:

social.bioware.com/903531/polls/13017/

Just for the record, in this case voting yes also counts towards the idea of Biwoare at least including secondary teams that may or may not be put at risk (like in the suicide mission) that you wouldnt control but would add an element of realism and immersion to the game experience

No. There will be too much going on. I just want better control and AI for my team.

Adding a third squadmate will do absolutely nothing to alleviate the lack of realism when going into a warzone with so few people while the rest of your team is twiddling their thumbs. Why four instead of ten? Twenty? Squad size is purely a gameplay decision, not a reallity simulation.

And for gameplay I think 3 (2 plus shep) is the right number, it certainly was for ME2. There are only so many abilities and squadmate positioning orders you can manage while keeping the pace of the game high. Adding another to control would tip that over the edge. It is possible we will get higher level characters with more abilities and that will be daunting enough as it is.

Three is a nice balanced number that leaves a good amount of challenge for the player.

I too would like more squad mates to go on missions with, it' a little ridiculous having 10 or so squad mates, but being able to take only 2 on missions. I know it's done not to make the game play to easy, but it would be cool to have an option to take more of them if you so choose.

I'll be happy if they'll make my squad take cover on the proper side of shielding :P and wait for the rocket to pass before they stick their head's out to cast some powers :P

Thing is. If its a game with only one squad member, people ask for more (JE). Two squad members? People ask for one more (ME). Three squad members? People ask for one more (DAO, especially for the dog).

Thing is I think people always want one more. I can sorta relate to it since people will take their favourites along with them, but also want to take that one other pretty cool guy/gal for which there's no space. That said I think the Mass Effect system works quite well so doesn't really need to.

Seeing as how squad mates are useless 90% of the time, gameplay wise, I don't care.

I don't like it. taking away something as iconic a the 3 man squad is gonna mess up ME3. What's next? a 1st person mode?

actually make us pick 3 for a mission but make the mission split so you have to have 2 of your squadmates do one thing on their path and you do another sorta like what gears of war does with a couple of there missions

Having played Republic Commando I like the idea of four (three including you) people in a squad considering the etymology of the word.

Why can't we just control everyone? Add a few layers to the command circle pop up, hallelujah. You now have a reason for the game to pause when you open the circle.

...And make the combat harder./soapbox

Stick with 3. It is better that way. More squad members would just complicate situation and ruin the game. Mass Effect was always about shepard and two team mates versus the bad guys.

How would that complkicate things? Explain. Dragon Age did it and so do many other games. Hell a 3 man squad is the exception rather than the rule.

^His talking about the iconism of the series. It's always Shepard in the middle with two others beside him.

While I'd love more options in combat, I'm not sure how this would play out on the xbox controller.

That's a stupid reason not to have an additional squad mate.

Dragon age is a pause and play strategy game where you were managing hundreds of abilities. ME is a third person shooter. Shooters play at a much faster pace.

There were definently AI issues in ME2 and even worse in ME. It was really hard to get your squad to do what you wanted them to at times in ME2 but when they got it right, and didn't make their own decisions contrary to your orders (a serious problem), the squad became an UNSTOPABLE FORCE!

One occasion I recall that worked really well was the first fight against Harbinger on the human colony where Ashley was (forgot name). But I posted up Garrus and Grunt in one spot, they were able to keep the attention of the entire collector force while I posted up on their flank and picked them off one at a time. They didn't stand a chance, anytime one of them noticed and started to shoot at me, they would immediately get hit by one of my other guys and get distracted! It was awesome! I broke their shields one at a time then sprayed Inferno ammo into the group, by time I killed one the two next to him were both half dead already! Saved Harbinger for last, that was just the first wave. The last wave ended with Garrus distracting / suppressing them from one side, me picking them off from behind and Grunt charging up the middle of their flank seriously wiped them out, took me a little while to figure out that my guys had already killed Harbinger for me, have no idea when but he still never even got a chance to do his respawn trick!

Anyway, when it worked it worked PERFECTLY and it could only work better (if you can get it to work) with more squad members. So I support expanding the squad in ME3. Maybe still have two main squad members that you can quick position with the Q/E keys and the rest menu based orders like the Power Wheel or a system like SOCOM if you've ever played those.

It always pissed me off from ME that you've got like a 6 plus person team but you can never take more than two people with you no matter how dangerous the mission, didn't make sense. And I HATE when things don't make sense. I really appreciated missions like Vermire from ME and the Suicide Mission from ME2 where all team members participated as other squads opperating in support of your own, even though you still only had the 2 guys at your direct disposal, it made alot more sense that way.

EDIT: Spelling.
