Hello,

I would like help regarding the Dragon Age toolset.  I
recently installed a new hard drive so am working with a clean install
of both Windows and DA.  However, on my old HD, I tried installing the
toolset, but got an error similar to 'Cannot modify something.dll.  You
may have to update your OS to install this program'.  (Sorry, old drive
fried with the screenshot of the error message on it.)  This is a new
Windows XP install with all priority updates, plus the secondary ones
regarding .NET frameworks.

On the developer's wikia, I saw that I
need four things for the toolset to work.  Directx is fine on my
computer, and MSSQL is bundled in the installer.  However, the other two
are something of a mystery.  I believe I saw 'PhysX drivers' when I
applied the 1.04 patch, but could not swear it.  So, how do I check that
"Visual C Runtime Library" and "PhysX drivers" are installed and in
order on my computer?

Thank you!

Sooooooo. Seeing as EA states that toolset tech support is not their jurisdiction, and told me to come to the Bioware forums for help, should I conclude that Dragon Age is not, actually, fully supported?

Correct. They have completely dropped DAO in favour of DA2, although to be fair they have pretty much never supported the toolset. I think it's a case of "you were lucky enough to even get it in the first place, so you're on your own with any problems".

PhysX is physics simulation software (and previously dedicated hardware), now owned by nVidia. It should have nothing to do with the toolset, just the game itself. If you have an nVidia card, PhysX drivers come bundled with their card drivers. Presumably they also have a standalone driver for ATI/AMD users on their site. Not that you should need it for the toolset anyway.

Visual C should get updated during either game or toolset install I would think. If you get an error it is easy enough to find the relevant installer on Microsoft's site with a Google search.

Thank you for your answer, Darth.

So, I did get the same problem as before, and no, it was not a missing dll problem. It was a "protected dll" problem. From reading Microsoft's help, this comes from installing english MSSQL on a regionalized non-english Windows XP SP3. Great, uh.

Anyway, MSSQL did install, amazingly. However, when I open - nay, TRY - I get the "cannot connect to database" error. Hold it, right there. I DID go to the developer's wiki and followed the advice there as best I could.

Now, there was no database to restore, but I did try the procedure anyway. Failed.. So I tried creating one from scratch, but the .bat run did not work, and moreover, decided to bug with error numbers that are not listed in the error handling section of the wikia page.

See, I did my homework. Error numbers 3154 and 3013. If you want the rest of the charabia listed to help me out, I'll be happy to transcribe it here.

So, what do I do now? What should I try next?

I can't get the toolset to work, every time I try to start it, It says that the toolset needs to be configured, so I tried to configure, when I am done with that I try to open the toolset again and get the same message. My OS is Windows XP Profession SP3. I even tried Unistalling and then reintalling again, but still nothing. Anyone Have any Ideas as to what I may be doing wrong or how to fix this problem.

...Anyone?

I swear I've read the "Unable to connect to database" page of the toolset dev wiki from one to another.  It often lacks details that would help immensely the not-sysadmin users among us.

For instance, in the "restore database if it failed after installation" (whatever that's supposed to mean anyway - what failed? the database failed? the database itself can't fail, it's not an action - the installation, creation, pointing failed?  the after installation failed?) it says to change the lines

SET SOURCE=C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\tools\\dbbak
SET TARGET=C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\tools\\toolssql\\Data

"to the path of your Dragon Age installation folder as appropriate".  Does that mean my Dragon Age folder, or the Dragon Age toolset folder?  If it really does mean the Dragon Age folder, is it normal that the target folder as specified above does not exist in my Dragon Age folder, which I installed using all the defaults?

If it is not normal, what problem can I diagnose from this symptom and how do I solve it?

I have to admit, I expected a damn lot of this toolset after the one Bioware gave us for Neverwinter Nights forever ago.  It's a huge disappointment that it's such a ****ing hassle to simply get to work.  I understand I'm not an informatician, but I'm a skilled end-user and I work my way around most issues commonly encountered by end-users.  May I offer the opinion that the fact the toolset that requires professional-level skills to install is one of its flaws?

Sure, you can argue that if I can't even install it, I don't have the skills to work with it.  It's probably true that I couldn't build a complete mod, but I sure as hell would open the official campaign and check all those dialogs I missed.  I'm pretty sure I could manage that.  If the *!"/%%$&*) thing would install.

Can someone please answer me regarding the missing folder mentionned further up?  It might also be helpful to mention that I am extremely loathe to uninstall and reinstall the toolset, since the last time I did that, it refused to ever reinstall until I formatted the HD.  (I uninstalled using the Start menu command, ran Ccleaner afterwards, then tried to reinstall.  It refused.)
