Which is better for straight-up DPS?

(And I realize archers aren't the best DPS in the game atm, but if I have one, and I want to maximize its damage, which is better?)

I didn't ask which class, I asked whether using "Aim" or "Rapid Shot" does more overall damage for an archer.

I'd say it depends on the situation and how you plan to play your archer. If you plan to mainly rely on auto-attack then Rapid Shot is probably better. If you plan to build up your trees a bit and use a lot of heavy hitting active abilities, like Arrow of Slaying, then the bonuses from Aim, especially with Master Archer, are significant and important. Also keep in mind there's a few items that are pretty clearly better for one build vs. the other. Like +crit items aren't going to be nearly as desirable for a Rapid Shot/passive auto-attack build as your auto-attack can't crit while many of the sustained abilities are active.

Worth reading up on the abilities in the link below:

Rapid shot works best for low armor enemies and mobs because the speed gains are great with Master Archer.

Aim works best for high armor enemies because of the better Crit chance.

i agree. rapid shot is great for larger packs of trash mobs and aim is better against a few  tougher enemies.

agaisnt most high armor enemy AKA boss your gonna be using rapid shot + suppresing fire anyway. Aim just seem lackluster until you manage to get arrow of slaying, crit shot, etc like above said.

So Aim affects the arrow of slaying? I thought it only affected auto fire? Interesting...

if you have high dex then rapid shot will be better dps especially with master archer talent.

I've always been kinda unimpressed by rapidshot. The lack of criticals seems to go against the fact that my archer is stacked with dexterity and the odd +ranged crit chance %. Often firing with no mode active seems to be just as good.

The attack speed bonus of Rapid Shot is based on your dex. it caps at 300% fun with suppressing fire on bosses.

Neither, imo. Get an item with Rapid Aim on it--it's like having Rapid Shot on all the time. It doesn't work with either Aim or Rapid Shot, though. I guess Aim is decent if you're using a lot of specials, since they're already slow, but in general I wouldn't bother with it.

I was under the impression that Aim and Rapid Shot affect only your to-hit numbers. That is, Aim takes more time to shoot, but is more likely to hit. Whereas Rapid Shot gets off more shots, but each has less chance to successfully hit. The damage inflicted is more a function of what kind of shot you took: normal, Pinning Shot, Critical Shot, etc.

I'd use aim for targets that are far away or hide behind something and rapid shot for targets close up.

I'm just curious but how about sustaining Precise Striking and Rapid Shot or Aim? Does that make the shot more stronger with PS+Aim or does PS+RS nullify each other's effects? But I suppose Aim would be better in my opinion on account less misses.

Both serve different purpose. Rapid shot is mostly meant for big group of **** and aim for yellowname and higher though rapid shot + suppresing fire is better defensively on yellowname/higher.

Both are good and you will end up getting both anyway

Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure this isn't true.  Leliana with "her" bow, Repeater Gloves and Aim fires arrows as fast as the animations allow for.

Meh, after trying it for several characters, I've come to the conclusion that Rapid Shot is pretty much always better in every situation. There really shouldn't ever be an enemy you have trouble hitting anyway, and the crit % doesn't compare to the sheer buff to DPS.

That being said, I downloaded the archery revamp, modded it a bit, and play with Aim anyway. To me, pluggin away with a bow every quarter of a second just feels cartoony. I prefer a deliberate, heavy-hitter approach if I can manage it.

I'd use aim for bosses and rapid shot for weaker mobs. All rapid shot even does is remove your ability to hit criticals, so its pretty damn good against low level enemies.

documentation concerning the exact nature of "Aim" is a little inconsistent. The increased critical chance seems to be proportional to your base critical+modifiers. I've been operating under the assumption that Dragon Age Wiki has the correct formula and that it doubles your crit chance, minus the modifier for weapon material. doubling up on pieces of gear with "rapid aim" yields no greater change over a single piece, and rapid aim does nothing if you don't have aim turned on.

accepting all of that, Aim becomes incredibly powerful once you start stacking ranged critical chance. long sight, Cadash Stompers, Longbowman's belt, Far Song, that gives you 13% bonus chance to crit(before aim doubles it). Add the Red Jenny Seekers gloves to complete the set and you have 25% bonus critical damage. Activate Aim and song of courage and you have yourself a recipe for good good times, you'll be critting big and often. you can squeeze in another 10% critical damage with the wicked oath ring. It just starts to get silly.
