So now that ME3 was announced i started a new playtrough of ME1 and found kind of a plot hole:
if the citadel is a relay to dark space that implies there's another kind of a relay in dark space, if so why don't the reapers just open it from dark space rather than leave someone behind to open it from the citadel? i'm pretty sure they wouldn't design it so it can be opened only from one side. I mean the reapers aren't so dumb now are they?

Both relays have to be open and active for you to be able to use them. So unless they left the relay open in the Citadel which might tip off the purpose of the Citadel, then it can't be used until it is turned on. The whole idea of the trap is to take the governing body by complete surprise, allowing the Reapers to take down the government AND seal all relays using the Citadel controls to isolate every solar system for easy picking.
