OKay i was about to buy a rlly good new laptop for DA2, but i found a really really good deal but i NEED your advice.
the things im not familiar with are:
the processor: AMD athlon II Dual core 2.2GHZ
the video card: ATI mobility Radeon HD4250 1MB L2 cache

the other, more expensive one has
processor: intel core i5 460M processor turbo boost technology 2.53GHZ (not duo or quad)
video card: ATI mobility radeon HD 5650

The processor is what i really have no idea...

whats the difference???

Are you kidding? The first one is old tech and also video cards don't have L2 Caches. Definately buy the second, though if you don't know the difference between an HD 5650 and an HD 4250, you need to do more research about it. Go to notebookcheck.com, click on FAQ/Tips/Technics and you will be able to find benchmarks for the video cards and for the processors. To save you some time I have posted the links below.

ATi Mobility 4250

ATi Mobility 5650

AMD Athlon II

Intel Core i5 460M

Hope that helps. You can also use the site to read reviews of other components. Another thing you should do is to google the laptop "Brand Model# reviews" to find out about screen quality and stuff like that.

I would add to consider putting together a desktop. For the same price you get much higher performance, though with no mobility.

thing is, my father works at HP computers. gets a discount, anything non HP and i get disowned...

so the new HP ENVY it is <3

Wow, and this was supposed to be a gaming laptop? I mean, i could play Mass effect 2 with everything turned on and it runs super smoothly.

I should mention of course the core i5 is dual core as well. Have fun with your new envy!

Are you talking about an Alienware m11x? The processor is not as important as the video card for gaming.

I might be building a new computer (my first) and I thought you might help me with which gpu I should go for. Those I've looked at are: XFX radeon hd 5770, Gainward gts 450 GLH, EVGA gts 450 FTW and XFX radeon hd 5770 xxx.

Does different card types (amd(ati)/nivida architecture) work better with different motherbords and is Physx and Cuda a great loss if I go for a Radeon?

Which settings will I, approximately, be able to play DA2 on? In addition to the gpu I'll use an amd tri-core 3.2gh, 4gb ram and 64 bit Win 7.

450? That's not a very good card, actually.

Did you mean 460?

5770 is not a bad card, I'd say pick that - but make sure it has GDDR5 memory, and not gddr3 (that'll make it crazy slow).

What DX11 features are gonna be put to work? Meaning, how heavily will tessellation be used? I've only seen one game (a benchmark) use tessellation to actually make a large visual difference.

If DX11 didn't have that multithreading ****e, it would be so lame :|

I have almost the same setup as you but with an i5 processor. I could run Dragon Age on low. Anything higher gave me <30 framerate and stuttering, which I can't handle. I think anything short of an Alienware is not good enough for DA2 if you want at least 30FPS.

The Geforce 220, 230, 330 and 320 are equivilants to the old 8500 GT, not intended for middle of the pack Mainline gaming, just a budget card that can run "some" games at Low settings for people who do not do a lot of gaming.  The GT n30s have mosty been offered via OEM branded prebuilt systems, and were only slightly better than the n20s.  Far more easily for desktops than laptops, because of screen limitations, it is possible to adjust rhe screen resolutions to relatively low settings and regain some of the lost animation speed.

I'm really sure I mean 450 :) I've heard that the 450 scores between 5750 and 5770 and sometimes matches the 5770 plus it haves physx and Cuda (if that's worth something to mention).

I don't claim to know much just wondering since I've read a lot on reviews on the web.

Btw doesn't all 5770 have GDDR 5 memory?

And thx for your oppinion :)

So I'm buying a new laptop soon, and I'd just thought I needed to make absolutely sure the computer I'm getting will actually play the game. It'd be a darn shame to get a shiny new laptop only to discover a nasty surprise when I installed DA2 on it a few days later...I hate to have to ask questions like this, but though I'm quite good at using computer, I admit I know, well, nothing about them.

So, here it is:

Dell XPS 15
Processor: Intel Core i5-560M@2.66GHz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GT 420M 1GB
Memory: 6GB

I realize the video card is probably pretty low end, but the other option is GeForce 435M and it is significantly more expensive. There are faster processors available (i7-740QM@1.73GHz), but again, more expensive (you kinda get stuck on a low budget when you're a college student without a steady job, unfortunately).

I'm not really picky about super high performance, honestly. I just want it to play.

Thanks in advance!

pianomaestra - as a reference see http://www.nvidia.com

Both the 420M and 435M have 96 cores, the 420M @ 1000MHz and 435M @ 1300MHz.

So the 435M would be about 30% faster than the 420M. Neither would do well with the DX11 features.

I think that you would be able to play with the 420M with limited resolution, details, and DX11 features off.  The 430M would be a little better.

I just looked through dell's site and I think a much better option would be to select the standard config with 4 GB of memory and getting an i7-740qm and GT 435. You don't really need the 6 GB anyway for the game. What is your budget? Have you considered a desktop?

A little off topic, but never ever buy a computer direct from dell.com. You are a student and thus qualify for EPP discounts. If you decide to go for the dell send me a pm and I'll explain how to get it with a huge discount.

A laptop is sadly necessary at the moment. My college is out of state, and it would be a little hard to, say, stuff a desktop in my backpack and put it under an airplane seat when I go home for vacation. And I don't think there would be any sort of flight attendant helpful enough to shlep it around for me, so. :(

I've heard that getting the i7 and higher card causes some heating issues, and, as they only come together, will cost a bunch more. I'd like to keep it around or under $1000, but I will go one or two hundred over if  I really need to. I'll think about it, at least.

Yeah, I have been hearing bad things about dell, but....well, I don't know anywhere to buy something like this, and I have experience with dell, at the very least. It helps my mother's job gives their employees discounts. :D

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm getting the game for PS3 but also have a 50% off code for the EA store so would also look at getting it for PC.

Now I have a Sony laptop though. My question.

Is the PC demo the same spec as the final game? If the demo plays ok will the game also play?
