Why would XP be under recommended?  Its the minimum operating system you can use for DirectX 9c support.

I'll ask it another way. There is no recommended OS. Shall we assume the minimum are also recommended?

Generally speaking, if you have an OS listed in the requirements, it should work, and you've a right to complain if it doesn't.

If you're running something else, it probably won't work and you've no right to complain....
If you DO manage to get it running on something else, bully for you, but they're not obligated to support it if something goes wrong.

Edit: Just to clarify. "Work" and "Run at max settings" are not the same thing. As mentioned previously, if you're on XP, don't expect to be running DirectX 11 no matter what hardware you throw in your machine.

thank you for the HD space explanation Image IPB

OGG vorbis encoded speech makes a lot of sense. It prioritises middle range frequencies (the frequencies which happen to coincide with speech) while sacrificing high end frequencies (compared to say mp3). This means for voice with OGG can maintain a better quality for the same bit rate as mp3. Lower bit rate = lower file size.

The main space saver would definitely be those 75% footprint reductions though. That sounds pretty cool. DA2 graphics look to be designed to be clean and sharp. Not super high photo realistic detail like modern FPS crysis etc. This I expect would allow great optimizations, while still allowing proper high res textures to be implemented within that 7gb file size. Loading times might be super snappy as a result too i bet Image IPB

IMO As long as the quality is 192-256 kbps the compression used with OGG will make the most difference for the voices.

7Gb on HDD? Well, the game must be even shorter than I thought. Considering the VO, the game's length will probably not exceed 30-35 hrs on average. Anyway, it is another proof of the masseffectization process being in effect entirely. How sad.

Oh for the sake of bacon. It is this sort of doom and gloom naysaying that depresses the heck out of me. "Oh, I don't really understand how things work in the industry, but 7GB is less than previous, so it must be bad."

I shall try to explain in 3 main points why Dragon Age II is 7 GB.

1 - We used a different compression scheme in DA II than DAO (something called "ogg" I am told).
2 - 2 less fully VOed langauages
3 - Optimized mesh data, physics and lighting (which I am told reduces the footprint of environments by close to 75%)

I know some will still doom and gloom, but the game is 7GB because we are better at making games. So, now that you have some reasons why the game is 7GB I hope this will calm some of you down.

See that wasn't so difficult.. was it? A little explanation is always very useful.

Hi everyone, I'm a patronizing little weasel who instead of expressing gratitude when someone takes time out of their day to allay specious fears makes snippy little comments, and then I don my Captain Obvious pants and point out glaringly obvious things, I've also made other such mind blowing observations including, but certainly not limited too, "Water is wet", "Fire is hot", and "Solid objects are hard"

edit

sigh i got so caught up in being a douche that i forgot the main reason for the post

Thanks for that tidbit Chris =-)

Heh, well I guess I'll need to give my video card a little boost when I decide to get this game (even though I'll have AA turned off).

Oh, does this mean that people who buy non-English editions (say, the German one, for a completely random example of absolutely no personal interest to me :innocent: ) can install the English voice files again, like it was possible to do in Origins?

I'm something of a twit when it comes to hardware tek, so could anymore more inclined to that sort of thing tell me if an ATI Mobility HD 5870 graphics card beats the system requirements? Going by numbers, '5870' is a larger value than '3870', but you never know, right?

Or well, I don't.

Yeah, you'll probably be able to run the game on max settings, but a mobility 5870 isn't nearly as powerful as a regular 5870. It's probably closer to a 4850 or 4870.

Hi all, has there been any clarification on what type of DRM this game will be using? Would hate to know later on when I have the game that they missed out to put on the system requirement something like "Constant internet connection is required to play this game"

I think so.

Edit: I wonder what are those two langauages?

Pretty sure you can.
The real question, by the way, is why THE HELL people keep buying a 32 bit OS when goddamn 64 bit CPUs are the industry standard since 5 years now.

So much hate to Microsft for even just realising an useless 32 bit version and holding all us back.

It does.  you're good to go, and  (apparently) your card will be able to take advantage of some of the DirectX 11 features, too

I see that Windows 7 32-bit is not listed there. Finally, a DX11 Bioware game! :D I hope a GTS 450/5770/5750 will handle this as well :)

Happy gaming, everyone :)

What kind of things will DirectX 11 do? If we're getting tessellation or better depth of field I may upgrade to Windows 7. I dislike the depth of field effect in Dragon Age and Mass Effect; it looks so bad. I'd rather turn it off completely, but If I'm going to be stuck with it I want it to look good.

The choice is up to you.

Sorry. I mean to know what graphical improvements DirectX 11 will bring to Dragon Age 2. And that is not up to us; that is the developers responsibility.

With the choice I was pointing at upgrading to Windows 7. It's really your choice.

Ah and now i am panicing ready to throw together some new parts. Amusingly i paniced for when ME2 came out then i installed it and it played just fine on my machine in fact even better in many ways to ME. I suppose i can always test the waters and then buy new things so i can actually play the damn thing. I figured my computer would have a breaking point one day with games and this might be the one that makes me upgrade.
