From my observations, 30 hours is the average RPG length
Maybe on the console, (even then Lost Odyysey and Lat Remnant both took me over 70 hours, and those are the only 2 console games I've bought recently) ME2 was the first RPG I've boughten in recent memory that took me less than 50 hours. Around 25ish I believe for that game.

I'm curious to see what exactly it is they're doing with DX11 though too. Its definitely nice to have, but if the textures and more basic graphical elements look like rubbish, then its kind of a moot point.
Every preview we've seen has said the grahpics are way better..........aww wait a minute..........that's for the consoles.

JRPGs tend to have long winded cut scenes (at least the one's I own).

So, either DA2 has worse graphics and texture than ME2 (so much for new cinematic feel), has less voice acting and dialogue (....), is just shorter (ME2 took me about 30-40 and I was taking my time). Or a combination of all three.
Did I get it right?
Either that or BW has learned some magic compression techniques.

Or they could be compressing and optimizing like crazy, which is a really good thing. Also the 7GB is the minimum requirement so the settings the player is using could mess with that as well.
It's just odd because there is a whole lot of voice acting and normally audio eats up quite a bit of space.

Ah true. long winded and drop dead gorgogues cutscenes. Unlike DA and ME where the cutscenes look worse than the rest of the game.

Yeah, granted those games are 90% side quests and optional bosses too, I'm sure you could get through the story in 30 hours.

Pretty much- or BioWare has some technical wizard like John Carmack to shrink DA2 down on disk. Or maybe they've optimized the engine to such a great extent? I don't know, but comparing ~20GB for Origins as the recommended space to only 7GB for DA2 seems a rather significant difference. Whether that difference is foreshadowing a PC game with crummy textures, less VO and less content is anyone's guess.

I fear this is one issue Laidlaw won't be clarifying, for obvious reasons.
Well, if they'd show some PC gameplay with some nice high res textures, swanky DX11 compute shaders, tesselation and some nice multicore threading going on, that would alleviate some of the pessimism.

See, this is my thought exactly.
Awakening for me is about a 15-20 hr game (I'd say about 17 normally, unless I spend time just letting it sit, which I do on occassion). And DA2 is supposed to have better graphics (which should take more space) plus voice for the PC (which should take more space) and yet isn't even twice as large as Awakening.
I don't play a ton of games, and when I do, it's on the 360, but I do like games that have some length - either that, or they better be DAMN good.
So 30-40 hrs kind of seems low to me, personally.

I suppose that this is possible, but I still really see only two options
1. They are doing some really top of the line compression craziness or
2. This is going to be a short game.
As this is Bioware we are talking about, I think I'll assume some awesome qualityness (yea for making up words) is going on but that's just imo

That WOULD make perfect sense, as looking at the worldmap, from what I can see, the Free Marches is about half the size of Ferelden. And they did say that most of the game will take place within the city of Kirkwall, I believe. So smaller country=less locations, but more content within those fewer locations.
Very good guess, if you take a good look at the world map and see for yourself how large the country you'll have to work in actually is.

I could say some kind of scathing comment about BioWare right now, but TBH I don't have the energy to be upset or even care anymore. They can screw up their franchise, w/e. I can't do anything about it.
Back to my discussion group and MEG thread I go. No more news about DA2, it just makes me more depressed.
