Hi there, I'm wondering
if anyone can help me. I've tried a search but I haven't been able to
find anything that's been of use
I'm using a physical
copy of the game with the 1.02 patch.
My system:
Intel® Core2 Quad
CPU Q8400 @ 2.66GHz
Clock Speed 2663 Mhz
RAM 3.24 GB
Video card ATI Radeon
HD 4800 Series virtual RAM 1gb. Drivers recently updated.
OS Windows Vista 32 bit
service pack 2
Ever since release the
game has been freezing after 5mins to an hour so that I can only
restart my computer by holding the on/off button. The game runs like
a dream at the highest settings until it crashes randomly. I can't
identify any triggering event within the game.
I have tried updating
my graphics card drivers to no effect, and I have also tried running
the game at low resolution, and reinstalling and updating to the
newest patch.
Similar problems
occurred with other Unreal engine games such as Mass Effect 1, Dragon
Age Origins and, more severely, with Borderlands. I have no trouble
with games that do not use an unreal engine like Crisis
I would really
appreciate help with this! Does anyone have any suggestions?
Freezing every 30 mins or so, please advise!

DirectX version? ME2 specifically requires 9.0c. 10 or 11 wont work.
You mention your graphics as HD4800 virtual ram 1gb. Virtual ram as in its built onto the motherboard (or is laptop) and is sharing ram with the system ram?
Dragon Age is not an Unreal engine game, so its not Unreal thats casusing the problem.
Could be a disk problem, ranging from out of space, severe fragmentation, or bad sectors.
You could also be infested with spyware and thats hogging system resources.

Thanks for the reply, I have directx 11 and so have tried to replace this with the 9.0c version. Unfortunately I cannot get it to override the DX11. Could you give me anyhelp with this please?

You don't need to get it to override, simply having it should be enough. Starting with DirectX 10, Microsoft has made the DirectX libraries separate, as opposed to replacements for one another. So DirectX 9 can (and indeed should) coexist with later versions like 11, there's no problem there.
Given you say this happens in other games, we're clearly looking at something more systemic than just a problem with ME or with the Unreal engine. You've taken care of updating your video drivers, which would be my first question.
I don't really have solid advice to give, I'm afraid. I suppose the next thing I would recommend is checking if you have some background process interfering. This Microsoft article details how to reboot with all non-Microsoft processes disabled. You could try that before your next play session and see if one of the games you've been having trouble with will run without crashing after you've done this minimal boot.
I'm also a little wary of the possibility that you have a hardware defect somewhere. But a freeze can just as easily be a software problem, and one would think something like Crysis would also expose the problem if it was hardware. And unless you happen to have a spare video card you could try replacing your current one with, I'm not sure how you could test that out anyway.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up, I've been googling for hours trying to get to the bottom of the directx thing. I'll give that article a read and have a go with that. It's also been months since I played Crysis so I might load it up to check it out.
Thanks for the help guys.
