CURRENT TOPICS:

1. Batarian Squad Member
2. Trusting Cerberus, the Alliance, or the Council

For most of the day, a few of us have been discussing the topic of a possible Batarian for a squad member in ME:3 though some of us chose to talk on the subject from the RP (role-play) perspective of our main
character.  This conversation got me thinking that in all these forums, there really isn’t a thread where we all can
discuss some topic through the eyes of our own Shepard as based upon the backgrounds chosen and how we play him/her.  So, for that reason, I would like to find out the interest of you all in trying this out as I think it may give us a better understanding of how we all perceive events within the game.

I’ll start off with a short example of what I was thinking:

Character:  Rayne K.
Shepard

Origin:  Colonist

Physiological Profile:
Ruthless

TOPIC:  Proposed Batarian Squad Member

“Personally, there is no way in hell that I would EVER consider allowing a Batarian into my team.
I don’t trust them!  Never will for that matter – not after what they did on Mindoir.  You see, I remember what they did to my friends, my family.  I remember how they butchered us – the screams of those I loved.  Batarians are animals and they should be treated like nothing more than an animal and put down.”

“They know me as the Butcher of Torfan, and for good reason.  From a child they taught me the one constant in this life – death!  I’ll give every effort I have to stop the Reapers but know this, if I can find a way to burn the Batarians out of this galaxy and watch their world crumble like ash – I swear on my last breath I will have justice paid!”

Ok… so there is my intro from the perspective of “Rayne
Shepard” on the topic of a possible Batarian on Shepards team.  What do you all think?

Good idea. I spend way too much time planning out my Shepards.

Character: Kim Shepard
(My MainShep, but not a Shepard based on myself. I just chose the username because I was playing this Shepard at the time. xD)

Background: Colonist

Service History: War Hero

Batarian Squadmate: She would not approve. If TIM suggested this idea to her in ME3, her response would be, "Not a chance. You know how I feel about batarians." The only way she could be convinced to let the batarian join is if he wasn't a slaver, but he'd still have a very high chance of being killed if he says or does the wrong thing. I can just imagine TIM asking what happened to the batarian squadmate and her answering, "He died. Violently."

And my first Shepard, soon to be on his third playthrough of ME1:

Character: Joseph Shepard

Background: Earthborn

Service History: Sole Survivor

Batarian Squadmate: I don't think he'll be working for anyone in ME3, so I'm not sure who would suggest this to him. Anyway, his response would be a lot less emotional than MainShep's. "I never met a batarian who deserved to live. From what I've heard, they're all slavers and sadists. But we need to win this war, so if you think he can help, then he's coming with us." And his warning to the batarian when he joins up. "If I have reason to believe that you've compromised this mission or put my crew in danger, I'll bury you out there." He can always kill the batarian for his crimes after the galaxy has been saved.

Well, my Shepard does like to talk.

Character
: C. Shepard

Pre-Service History: Colonist

Physiological Profile: Sole Survivor

Topic: Batarian Squadmate

"A batarian?  Are you kidding me?

...

Well, I wouldn't like it.  But - not talking a slaver or an anti-human extremist, here? - I wouldn't turn away the help, not if they were genuine about it... so long as they can pull their own weight and don't trip me up, or ask me to solve their personal problems.  I doubt we'd ever be friends, but I'm not out here to make friends.

Serenity would walk out of the room.  "It's not up for discussion.  Don't ever mention that, ever again."

Character: Jordan Shepard
Pre-Service: Colonist
Psych Profile: War Hero
Topic: Batarian Squadmate

"Err... If I thought we could trust him.  Her.  It.  I dunno.  I guess?  We could try.  I mean, we're all in this together, right?  We're all part of the same galaxy, we all want to live.  Not all Batarians are horrible evil murdering slavers... sorry.  I guess, we can do a test run.  Learn more about each other.  Try not to kill each other, see what happens.  Do you think they like music?"

Character: Hayden Shepard
Pre-Service: Earthborn
Psych Profile: Butcher of Torfan
Topic: Batarian Squadmate

"Wait, you're serious?  I thought you were kidding!  You want me to work with a Batarian?  Don't they use my name to make little baby Batarians behave?  I'm the monster under the bed to these people.  I'm the thing that goes bump in the night.  Or, the thing that wiped out half their family and helped drive them out of the Skyllian Verge.  I don't work with Batarians, I bury them.  Unless that's what you want.  Do you want me to pretend to work with him, and kill him when nobody's looking?  I can do that, no problem.  Trust one?  Now I know you're joking.  I don't trust anybody except Garrus.  And maybe Legion, but that's only because he's too stupid to lie.  Batarian?  No way."

Character: Alexis

(Alas, my original main Shepard, Julia, is lost for good after various computer issues... so Alexis is the new one, though I'm having to start her over again, too, since I can't get the BDTS DLC to install and therefore my save files don't work!)

Background: Earthborn

Psychological Profile: War Hero

class: Vanguard

Batarian Squadmate: "Personally, I never heard anything good about these guys, but I doubt anybody ever heard anything good about me, either, before I enlisted. I'll give him a chance, but if he screws up, he's off the squad, and if he tries any funny business, well, we'll arrange a squad of the firing type for him."

Character: Erica Shepard

(A Shepard I had before and really liked, so I may just remake her...)

Background: Colonist

Psychological Profile: Sole Survivor

class: Soldier

Batarian Squadmate: "Are you kidding me? Look, it's not that I hate aliens--I don't. Actually I'm amazed to say it, but I think I've gotten along better with the aliens than anybody else. I'm glad to have Garrus around to remind me that this is not just about us humans--and then to go snipe some mercs with. But, a batarian? That's taking it a little far. It's one thing to make pals with a turian--that war ended about the time I was born, so it's time to let go already. It's entirely another to get buddy-buddy with a batarian. They're still stealing our colonists, they're still raiding our trade vessels, and generally they're still being a major pain in the ass. Look, if you prove to me I actually, for whatever reason, need this slimeball, I'll take the Normandy and pick him up. But otherwise, that's one scar that hasn't healed over yet, and you'd be smart not to ask me again."

Renée Shepard, a Spacer/War Hero/Infiltrator/Paragon would say:

"No way in the universe.  Those people are either poorly disciplined mercs, dishonest merchants, pirates, or slavers.  He's not welcome.  End of discussion.

I completely agree with you OP. My canon Shepard is also Colonist/Ruthless and there is a zero percent chance he would ever allow a Batarian on his squad. My Shepard feeds on the tears of tortured Batarians.

Character: Zinya Shepard
Pre-Service: Spacer

"Well in this war, no one can stand by the wayside.  We have to all band together to fight this enemy.  I don't see any reason why the batarians should be allowed a free pass.  If there is one that would make a good squad mate, I have no problem with it.  If it gets me in the good graces of the batarians and gets me in the door to ask them to join in the fight, I'm all for it."

Character: Zane Shepard
Pre-Service: Spacer
Psych Profile: War Hero
Topic: Batarian Squadmate

"Why do I need another squadmate.  I mean, I need armys not squatmates.   The ship is entirely too crowded now.  If the batarians want to talk, let them send ships and soldiers and then we can talk.  If they want to play house, tell them their days are numbered. *walks away muttering*  "Everyone wants to be on my ship"

What fun!

*ahem*

Character:  Vielle Shepard (Colonist/Sole Survivor; Renegon)

Proposed Batarian Squad Member

"...Why would a Batarian want to be on my squad, precisely?
Eh. Never mind. Forget I asked.
More importantly: can they do the job required of them, and do it well? Is this theoretical Batarian willing to work as a team player, and not start **** with my crew? If worst comes to worst, will they at least sit down, shut up, and follow my lead? If the answer is 'yes', great. Get the hell in here.

"Yeah, I figured that'd earn me a raised eyebrow. You read my file, right? Yeah. Well, Mindoir was a long time ago. The galaxy's a big place; I'm smart enough to recognize not every Batarian's a goddamn slaver."

Joanna sounds about like my original main Shep, Julia.  She was also Spacer/Ruthless, and absolutely consumed by guilt to the point she'd mostly be paragon, and then bam, she'd do something very renegade--it would always make sense, but at the same time, I'm sure her squad wondered where THAT came from (or were scratching their heads at how this absolutely ruthless person was so very... non-ruthless).

Yeah, working the guilt angle is fun for a ruthless background.  It's cool that I'm not the only one that saw it that way.  Joanna's men died on Torfan because she made a bad command decision, and she's devoted her life to atoning for that mistake.  Bring Down the Sky was incredibly intense from that perspective, I tell you what.

Yeah, that's one of my fave ME1 missions, and I can't play it anymore after my computer issues.  Won't let me install it, ran out of installs (hardware change to fix old computer, then complete rebuild = no more installs).  Alas.  But Julia'd sacrifice the hostages for fear that the batarian would harm millions more people if allowed to go free.

Bring Down The Sky sounds like a great mission, from everything I've read about it. Unfortunately, no downloads means I've never played it. MainShep would get to show the vengeful side of her character so much more in the missions that I don't have, like BDTS and Zaeed's loyalty mission. At least some of the other squadmates, like Garrus, have personal missions that let me play out that side of her in-game.

Hey! I don't think I've seen one of these around the forums before. Sounds cool!

Cameron Shepard: Colonist/Ruthless

"I've met a lot of batarians in my travels...and I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of. I've killed some, but I've also helped and aided some. I've moved on. If a batarian soldier is willing and able to come aboard the Normandy 2.0, willing to work with humans and other races to help stop the Reapers, then I'm all for it."

Okie doke, my Shepard.
Pre-Service History: Colonist
Born and raised on Mindoir, a small border colony in the Attican Traverse. When he was sixteen, slavers raided Mindoir, slaughtering his family and friends.
His mother was captured and executed via a shot to the head.
His childhood sweetheart was dragged off by her hair, thrown into a cage and never seen by him again.

Physiological Profile
: Butcher of Torfan.
Sent 3/4ths of his unit to its death slaughtering every slaver he could find, even those that surrendered.

Topic: Batarian Squadmate
TIM: I'm sending you to Camala to pick up a batarian who I believe will be a vital asset to your team.
Shepard: Whats he do?
TIM: He's an accountant, he'll maintain and audit our business accounts.
Shepard: ...alright, whatever.

Moral: Not all batarians are evil slavers.

How have I not posted here yet?  I'm like Kim, I love thinking about and roleplaying my Shep :)  Though I'm only doing this for my main Shep.

Character: Kaliya Shepard

Background: Earthborn.  She mostly used her biotic abilities to keep herself alive and valuable to street gangs.  Killed her fair share of people in self-defense since she was twelve or thirteen.

Service History: Sole Survivor.  She's accustomed to violence and death due to her background, so Akuze didn't actually affect her too badly.  Apart from a fear of threshers on foot (Grunt's loyalty mission was a problem), she's mostly over it.

Batarian Squadmate: Her personal opinion would depend heavily on what the batarian was like, but unless he's a real monster, outwardly she'll treat him just the same as anyone else.  Earthborn/SS is one of the few background combos that never deals with batarians.  And by ME3, everything is going to hell in a handbasket so quickly that I doubt she'd turn down help--at this point, she needs every gun she can get.

Basically, she'll give him the same speech she gives every crew member: "Do your job, follow my orders, and don't you dare rock the damn boat.  Same rules apply to you as everyone else--you cause trouble, and you get one warning.  After that, I'm dumping you out the airlock, no questions asked.  Save your hate for the Reapers, not each other."

If there were enough of an interest in roleplaying, why not start a full fledged scenario? Granted, that is somewhat time consuming to manage. Don't mind me, I just come from a RP background and use to do so frequently. So... the mind wonders, xD. If people are game to do something like that, be sure to let me know. :D

Time to toss my girl into the mix.

Name: Alexis Shepard
Pre-Service History: Colonist
Physiological Profile: Ruthless

During the raid upon Mindoir Alexis endured the death of her family and was forced to execute her closest friend via gunshot to spare her from a life of torture. She was captured and with no other alternative, this was the decision she made. Such a powerless and defeated feeling has haunted beyond a decade, beyond when she claimed a bloody vengeance at Torfan.

Proposal of Batarian squad mate

"That would depend on the life expectancy of your... acquaintance. If he has a death wish, by all means, arrange a meeting. Be warned, I shan't be quick... but I will be efficient, very efficient. Otherwise, pester me on the subject again and I shall loss my 'peachy' attitude. We good?"

I ran an RPG group here for a while.  It pretty much tanked.  I'm reasonably sure there are more such groups still in existence; all you have to do is search.  I won't be joining another, though, due to time/energy/motivation issues.

My Earthborn Sole Survivor has a similar fear of thresher maws. Although, his fear just makes him fight wildly until he kills them. He's even more paranoid than normal after working with Cerberus, so the appearance of the thresher maw in Grunt's mission was his real "Kill it with fire!" moment. The squad doesn't complain when the crazy Vanguard charges right up to it with heavy weapons though.

This made me think of Saren torturing the batarian in Revelation. xD Accurate comparison, or way off?

On topic of batarian squadmate: I think he would be uncomfortable with at first but he'd try to live with it for the sake of the mission.  Everytime Shepard looks into those four beady eyes and sees those pointed teeth they remind him of the slavers who butchered his entire family on Mindoir.  He understands that not all batarians are terrorists and slavers but it's not easy to just forgive and forget something like your home being burned to the ground.

Mine is just fine inside the Mako.  Damned thing can't be taken out by anything short of a Collector ship's guns.  It's on foot that makes her freak out.  Though she got over that pretty quickly on Grunt's mission--took a second to collect herself, then shot the Cain right into the maw's ugly mouth:devil:

As for ME RP, I did the insane, unmoderated Facebook RP for a couple months before a bunch of RL problems and just plain burnout caused me to stop. It was a lot of fun, but that is the first and last time I do such a huge unmoderated RP.  That being said, I might be up for a smaller RP with fewer explosions.  I do tend to play original characters in the universe in RPs--I figure Shep's story is better left to BioWare.
