Anyway, how many times have you played through Dragon Age? How did your characters end up?

Dalish Elf was boring.

My main problem is I don't know if I want to play as a male or female character. If I play as a male I know I'm just going to end up playing as "myself" whereas if I were to make a female Warden I feel as though I could actually RP her as her character and not an extension of myself. But suddenly having my bestest buddy Alistair trying to sleep with me and talking about my butt kinda freaks me out. That may say something about how secure I am with my sexuality but so be it.
Just a little encouragement in one way or the other would help me out a ton.
Sneelonz I think you should play each of the Origins once and see which one you like, if you haven't already. Also don't disregard Two-Handers as they can be a ton of fun to play, at least from what I experienced early game. They supposedly get a lot better end-game.

@OP: There's nothing wrong with playing as a mage again, other than you're missing out on the other great origins. The Human Noble origin can probably be seen as the 'canon' origin, so why not try out that one? If you're not into humans, I'd suggest the Dwarf Noble or the City Elf (if you do feel like playing an elf again. City Elf I'd recommend playing as a female character, though... that'll really get your emotions boiling).
If you do decide to go for the mage again, there are other options to keep it interesting. Specialise in one school of magic - try out a combination of classes you didn't use before (Arcane Warrior/ Blood Mage is one of my favourites) - rp your character in a completely different way to exerience the other ingame possibilities...
As for my characters, I finished the game with two human nobles, a City elf, and two mages. Am currently working on a Dwarf commoner. With the rest of my characters I sort of lost interest halfway through for no particular reason at all... The characters were rp'd in a totally different manner (ranging from goody-two-shoes noblewoman to bloodthirsty Necromancer), so the playthroughs were completely individual each time.
@Setre: I've never managed to finish a game with a male character, farthest I got was probably halfway through^^ But from what you're describing you seem to have a hard time immersing into a character that doesn't reflect your actual personality. It can be tough, trust me, but keep working on it and you'll get there. (It's occasionally still tough for me, aswell. Making truly vicious choices in the game always left a stale taste in my mouth and made me want to reload & replay, simply because I felt so bad afterwards^^)

Highly recommend either of the Dwarf origins. (Side note: Dwarf Templars rock.)

Started and won't finish on 360: female Dalish elf, male Dwarf noble, male Human noble, female Human noble.
Started and will try to finish on PC: female Human noble (intending to marry Alistair to become Queen/Princess-Consort but no relationship with him beyond friendship, relationship with Leliana, DR obviously), male City elf (undecided).
Started but may not finish on PC: female Dwarf noble.
Intend to go through on PC: male Dwarf noble, female Dwarf commoner, female City elf (by far my favourite origin followed by the human noble's), male Human mage and female (race undecided) mage.
I think that's all of them.
Common themes: Leliana as love interest and tend to take the Dark Ritual.
Hm...Dwarf Templar actually makes some sense given their innate resistance to magic. Might have to give that a go. Bugger.

I'm in the same boat as Sneelonz. I've only ever completed one playthrough, a Human Mage who did the US which I ended up deleting the save for. Where I differ from him is that I've made about 20+ characters since then and have completed at least one story mission then deleted them for one reason or another.
My main problem is I don't know if I want to play as a male or female character. Hehe, I have played through all of the origins... except for the Dalish Elf one.

I actually really like the Dalish Origin. There's quite a bit of lore there and it makes you question just what's up with the Elven Gods. I think you should give it a shot or watch a playthrough of it on YouTube.

Yeh. 25. At least. Probably 30. Maybe more. Good god...
/hides my head now...
Edit: All but one survived. All ended up with Zevran in love. My HNFs all ended up as queen -- most purely for political reasons, but at least one where Alistair was still in love with her.
City elf female is my favorite. Human noble female is a close second.

I've only played through with the Female City Elf, but I kept backing up to the Landsmeet and making different choices so I ended up playing out all the endings (I'm dead, he's dead, we live, we're apart, we're together, he's king, he's not king, Loghain lives, etc.) I think doing that sort of quashed any desire I had to play the whole thing over again, although I've done the HN, Elf Mage and Dalish origins and will do the Dwarf ones eventually.
Of course, I'm biased, but I really loved the Female City Elf origin. If you're uncertain about romancing Alistair, then don't. You can shut him down almost immediately (I think I'll do this with my Dalish if I continue playing her) and then he'll just be your "big brother." The first time he starts hinting just choose the "I'm not into you. This just won't work" option. If you do it early you don't even get much of an approval loss.

Yes, I have that same problem. Except that I went back after every "area" (woods, dwarves, redcliffe) and played through the choices.

I keep making "new" characters, and about three hours in, I realise that they have the same face, name, race and class... and they are making all the same choices.
Oddly, it keeps being enjoyable.

might help if you really work out a plan to play through in a real rpg mode (decide whether you want to be trade focussed merchant kind, or "out there for yourself" or the "helping everyone and suffering in silence kind"
