This goes back since the beginning of October.  I have so far purchased (2) digital download versions, the regular and the deluxe edition, plus a retail copy of Mass Effect 2, and I can not get any of them to install.  :(

I get the following message after hitting either the install button on the EA Manager, or the 'setup' file.

"Mass Effect 2 Installer Has Stopped Working"

I have been through EA's tech support already and we have tried opening different ports on my pc.  And yes I have tried all of the compatibility options through Win 7,
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have recently tried installing the "Demo" version through Steam and have received the following error message:

Error: Switch from current encoding to specified encoding not supported.
Line
1, Column 40 in inter XML settings.  :o

I have no clue as to what this
means.  :?

Usually afterwards I also get a blank window popup with an X on
it, nothing else.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been tearing my hair out trying different things to try and get it to work.  Turning Windows Installer On and Off.  Uninstalling registry entries.  The other versions just will not install.  And now the demo gives me the above error I mentioned.

My system is a brand new Alienware Aurora, Win 7 64-bit operation system, video HD 5670 dual ATI cards, PCIE X-Fi card.

I have been lucky so far getting my money back, but just recently getting an error message through Steam...well...I had enough, there has to be an answer.

i believe its a corrupted download... you gotta re-download mass effect... happend to me on need for speed undercover... so annoying when it happens...

1. uninstall it by right clicking if it shows on your ea game library.

2.go to settings on ea installer

3.click delete all game installers button

4.check for updates too before downloading again

hope this works out for you! cheers :)

One of the topics here in Pc support (i think) stated that the game isnt supported under Win 7 64bit.

I don't recall that, myself. It's possible that some of EA's amateur techs on their support staff have said it when they couldn't think of anything else more helpful. I actually suspect it's much more likely there is something in the background like Xfire or a browser window linked to a social site causing problems that people will put up with because they are so addicted to that sort of crutch.

I do have xfire, but during this it is not opened. As for other things turned on. Well it is an Alienware Aurora so they have alot of their things turned on on bootup...Thermal Controller, Alienware Color effects etc.

I also have read a few posts saying that it will not run on Win7 64-bit, but I have also talked to a few people who have Win7 64-bit who are playing the game just fine.

Thanks for your help.

Mass Effect 1 has the problems running under Win7 x64, ME2 shouldnt.

"Branded" PCs that go along and include all various forms of alleged "helpware" can cause all sorts of compatability issues. Alienware used to be good, but are getting as bad as Dell and HP in many respects. Remove any of their preinstalled apps that you dont need.

Does your PC every get close to running warm, let alone hot? If not, delete the thermal control software. Do you really need the Alienware colour effects?

Trim your system down to what you actually need, rather than every bit of eye candy a supplier will think you want.

Try downloading and installing DirectX9.0c prior to installing ME2. ME2 requires that version specifically, and Win7 will run fine with both 9.0c and 10/11 loaded side by side.

Reading on the web and copy the original error message from above it seems that the same thing also happens with Dragon Age Origins. AND it seems that most of the examples are from people who have 64-bit systems.

The only real solution was a guy who posted that the installers do not read the *.rar files correctly. According to him it could be the win.rar people. A code or something or other is placed in the beginning of the .rar files not abling the installer to read it correctly.

Now since I get the error message with the demo, that, after checking the demo folder, I see no .rar files listed how can it for me be associated with the .rar files?

I happen to have an old copy of the files from ME2 on my computer, which I should be able to install though I have no workable key. I tried copying the folder to the desktop and installing from there but I still get the "Mass Effect 2 Installer has stopped working".

The files are as follows in the 'data' folder which is the crust of the game:

apps.rar
autorun
bonus.rar
czech.rar
data01.rar
data02.rar
data03.rar
datasetup
dialog.rar
english.rar
exe.rar
hungarian.rar
(installment manifest for different languages) - installmanifest_en
localization
maps.rar
Mass Effect 2 Ininstaller
Mass Effect 2 Code
movies.rar
others.rar
russian.rar
spanish.rar

Now should I try and extract the *.rar files using winzip or winrar? Do you think that would work with the installer?

There is a file in the software folder named "EAAccessInstaller". When I click on it is says "the installer can only be run in silent mode. Please run with the \\\\S parameter." I know a little bit of dos but what exactly is this file and what does it do? Can I do anything with it?

To sum everything up in a nutshell:

Mass Effect 2 AND Dragon Age Origins were released at a time when most people were still using 32-bit systems and Vista. So in other words the two games were released for Vista 32-bit. (Type in the error code above in my original message and see that the results are all for Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins!)

Currently, as of 12/17/2010, both games will not run correctly on Win7 64-bit systems. There is a compatibility issue somewhere. And it is really sad that EA's tech support can not come up with a correct answer to fix the problem. Concerning gaming it makes me think the EA does not really care about the gamer but thinks more about collecting the gamers money.

The install error "Mass Effect 2 Installer Has Stopped Working" appears in all of the versions I have tried so far, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe Edition, and a retail copy with 2 disks.

When trying to run the demo from Steam I get:

Error: Switch from current encoding to specified encoding not supported.
Line 1, Column 40 in inter XML settings.

Which to me seems to have something to do with coding. Makes sense right?

If there is a solution to either problem on the web, that is besides reinstalling your entire system, I sure as hell can't find it. Personally I find the whole thing disgusting.

The average Joe, which I consider myself to be, should not have to spend this much time trying to get a game to work.

Two of the best games in 20009 and 2010 and neither will run on Win7 64-bit. End.

Thanks for your replies.

Do you have Dragon Age, or Mass Effect 1 in your cd/dvd drive when you are trying to install ME2?

Or any disc with an install routine on it for that matter? If so, make sure the optical drive is empty.

I have been unable to install me2 also, and also with a new pc. If I ever do find a solution, I'll let you know, as I haven't (quite) given up yet.
P.S. I also get the exact same msg, and my pc is a bargain unit (by gamer standards)  i3, 4 gig ram, nvidia gt240 w/ one gig etc, and was built by a friend, so it is NOT the stuff running on a name brand pc
P.P.S. One more thing, I also have gone thru 2 sets of disks and 2 downloads.  But both of my downloads were from eadm.

My two downloads were from EADM also.  The deluxe and regular.  I still have some of the files that I can work with but no key code.  If I could get to that screen I would be happy.

I have recently been trying combinations of the original game files to the copy that I still have on my hard drive trying to see if the "setup" file will stop giving me the "Mass Effect 2 Installer Has Stopped Working".

In the past with games and their sequels some of the files from one are the same in the other but with a few changes that may effect a game from stop working.

*Oddly enough when I click on any of the other "Mass Effect" files. (first game) (i.e. Launcher, MassEffectLauncher and MassEffectConfig), I get the Line 1, Column 40 error message also!

I thought that was rather peculiar!

But my "Mass Effect", the first one, is through Steam, and I have had no trouble installing or playing the game.  I just get the error message when clicking on those files.  That brings to mind the possibility of something that is setup in the game maybe causing the trouble since I can not get the MassEffectConfig to open in the first one.  If you follow me.  Something has it locked.

I appreciate your post very much.  And I also every once in a while will try other combinations.  Do you have Dragon Age Origins?  Does that work with no errors on your computer?  I do not have the game but have read where people are getting the same errors as ME2

Also when you talk about the game could you tell me if you have the Steam version or not.  EA was kind enough to return my money but sometimes Steam will give you trouble on a refund, though I would love to try the regular Steam game files though the demo will not work for me.  Does the demo work for you?.

And just a note I have maybe 10 copies of C++ distributable files on my pc, three of them named C++ 2005 distributable.  When I find out what goes to what game, maybe I only need one.

And the .network framework is something I am also going to look into.  I only have 1.0 .net framework on my pc, and the newest 4.net framework.  I read where the game needs 3.5 .net framework installed but I have to be cautious as to not mess up the rest of my system via 32-bit to 64.bit.  Image IPB

Thank you very much for your posts.

I don't have me1 or dragon age, so I can't help you there. I do not have the Steam version, but the guy who built my pc said something interesting. He said the Steam version would be more likely to work as they download the patched version of the game. I haven't tested this, as 1) I would have to buy the game again and 2) Steam is notorious for lack of tech support. I am downloading the demo as I write this and will let you know what happens.

I have found that the game does want (need?) C++ 2005, but that is included in the disk/download so you should be ok there. Let me know about the net framework if you find anything out.

Right now I have two things going; the guy who built my pc is going to let me come in Mon and try to install my disk ver on various pcs, and, after 6 or 7 chats, the guys at EA have bumped my problem up to "Senior Support" (whatever that means) and they are supposed to email me. I will be sure to let you know any new developments.

Finally, if you want, you can take a look at my thread called "Open Question for me2 players". It probably wont be any help, but the same issues are discussed there.

Gl my friend, and plz post if you find anything out about the net framework thing, and I will do the same for anything I find out. Maybe between the 2 of us, we can solve this b1tch.

UPDATE:
I thought I had it. I THOUGHT I HAD IT!!!!!! Mother Honcho son ofa rubber cephlopod ima kill my neighbor's dog. EIEIEIEIIIIIEEE I downloaded the demo from Steam and it ran fine. I took the demo to the point where I could interact, shut it down, and tried to install the disks. I actually made it to disk 2!!!!! I have never even come close to disk 2. And then.... and then.. my old friend: Installation Failure right at the start of disk 2. I think I am going to vets on Mon and get myself nuetered. Why not?

Later:  This of course begs the question; should I buy the game again but from Steam this time?  (Not the other question;  who needs kids?)   Will it work?  Or will I be throwing good money after bad?  Will I live long enough to finish the game?  Is there an afterlife?  And will I get my balls back if there is?  Are there video games in Heaven?  Or is that Hell?  If it seem like I'm raving, it's because I'm raving.

How did you get the demo to work?  I get the Line 1 Column 40 error message.  I can't even get that far.
Well I know "In Heaven There Is No Beer" from the song, not sure about video games.

I tried the .net framework research for .net framework 3.5 and it turns out it is included with Windows 7. If you want to check type in your search "Turn Windows Features On Or Off" and you will see it listed there as .net framework 3.5.1. It only showed a partial install so the two options underneath I checked. I let it go. Restarted my computer. Then tried ME2 Demo on Steam.

No changes. I still get the same error messages on the install and the Steam Demo. So back to the drawing board.

If you try this and it does nothing don't forget to uncheck the boxes to put it back to normal.

By the way this is what you want to use to uninstall internet explorer 8 if you have any trouble as I now have with the fileplanet download manager and direct2drive. I have also found out with reinstalling that there are two versions of IE8. One for 32-bit and one for 64-bit. Adobe does not as yet support a flashplayer for 64-bit IE8 so you have to use the 32-bit. I gave up and installed Opera. :-O

Somewhere recently since I bought my system I have gone to a website were someone mentioned there is something in Win7 that you have to add or remove a game to get it to run. I think it was one of the Sims games. I wish I knew what that was. I could try that with this.

I have discovered one thing that Windows 7 does have but I am not sure if it will help.
Under Adminstrative Tools you can get a list of erros with the operating system.

Click "Control Panel". Choose "Large Icons". Choose "Adminstrative Tools". Choose "Componet Services". Choose "Event Viewer". Choose the box 'Summary Of Adminstrative Events". Click or Open the +Error line. Then I scrolled down and looked for the last hour as I have tried to install ME2, and sure enough the installer events are listed. You have to click the "Details" tab in the window at the bottom.

With me I get a list of every time I tried the "Setup" file for Mass Effect 2 to install it only to get the "Mass Effect 2 Installer Has Stopped Working". Sadly it does not list the Line 1 Column 40 XML error message that I get with Steam.

I get the following, replacing my name with the phrase "USER". I prefer to stay ananomous:

Installer.exe
1.3.0.277
47701edd
nsisDirSelect.dll
1.0.0.11

I tried it 3 times and for each I get the above.

The events for yesterday are listedd and I get this"

I get the above for about 4 events/installer tries.

Then on the same day earlier I get this"

Installer.exe
1.3.0.277

nsisDirSelect.dll
1.0.0.11

If you notice everything is the same on each except for the ending address which I am guessing is because of turning the computer off and on with new info in the cleared temp folder.

What does this mean?

I am hoping someone could tell me. I have no idea. :-/  But it is a listing of errors with me trying to install "Mass Effect 2".

The XML error message I am going to try a few other things.   Here is a link for an explanation of what XML is?  You may recognize some of the phrases.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML

It is at times like this I wish I knew C++.  Also here is the error message with the Steam Demo version of Mass Effect 2 once more.

Error: Switch from current encoding to specified encoding not supported.
Line 1, Column 40 in inter XML settings

This is also a very good link concerning the nsisDirSelect.dll.  A few more things to try DeanBob.

First, you obviously know more about software and hardware in general than I do. Second, sorry about the rant, but I was really peaved to get so close and then fail again.

As for the demo, I did nothing but dl it, install it, and play it. I didn't even turn off my virus shield or firewall. Zero problems or msgs. I have recently run CCleaner again so I will probably not have any logs, but when I do I'll try to look where you suggested. Oh, one thing, I did make sure that my virtual drive was off (task manager) before I dowloaded and installed the demo, but that was it.

I, also, have heard about the add/remove issue with some games, but I asked a friend (who built my pc) and he said the issue there was with running the game, not installing it. I also told him that the demo worked for me and not for you, and he said that his feeling was that my newer version of winzip (or whatever it's called) was not playing nice with the older .rar files. Which explains why I couldn't do the manual extract trick that has worked for others. If you haven't tried this, it is explained in detail on a link on my post "Open Question for me2 players".

Anyway, my error mgs is always the same. Three lines of simple english "Install Failure. There has been a data error. Your installation has failed." This is not exact, but it's very close. I have never recieved the line/column error that you did. Was that just with the demo? On the full install, do you get the same msg? I see the error msg in your first post, but I assumed it was not exact. If it is, we may have different issues.

As for the IE uninstall, I have no idea. I've never had to do it. A couple of years ago I had a problem with fileplanet that ended up with me formating my hard drive. I have not been near that site since.

One last thing that T. (my pc expert friend) said about you. He said to f8 your startup and install the demo from safe mode to make sure that it is not Alienware software causing your problems. Might be worth a shot.

Ok, Im going to mess around with your net framework idea and see what happens. Mon I am going to see T. in person at the shop and maybe I'll have some more answers.

Further bullitens as events warrent....

Just finished up for tonight and have been playing with the MSXML Parser files.  There are 3 currently.  MSXML 3, 4, and 6.  Windows update actually has an install for 4 SP3 which since I had 4 SP2 on my system, must be new since I last ran windows update!  Anyways, Win 7 comes with 6 installed.  They are in the system 32 folder which I believe you know what that is.  Don't mess with that unless you know exactly what you are doing!

It installed the 3 files in there, two of them, but I had no change in either of the error message for the setup file version or the demo that I have.  I did all of that from the one link that I posted.  And yes MSMXL 3 does work and install in Win7.

I have run myself ragged tonight and have finished up looking into the Windows Installer, yet again.

I have checked my version, command prompt, type MSIExec and a little window pops up telling you your version and I have the latest.  My pc is new since the end of August.

My fear which maybe the reality of it is that it is somehow related to the registry or yet worse, One of the Windows Update Files (KBXXXXX).  The latter being nothing but a mess and most prolly unsolvable without a full reinstall of the system.

From experience, KB files can at times cause a corruption in your system files, which means an unstable system or even a crash, which I have had on my old pc from KB files.

1.  The screens will not pop up.  The XML error on Steam Demo version tells me that. And with the install Mass Effect Installer Has Stopped Working.  This is due to some kind of coding not working correctly on my part.  Also maybe due to a registry entry.

2.  Alot of people have had this problem.  If you search the web I keep finding more and more people with this problem.  Why some and not others on Win 64.  It makes me think of the Windows Update that some do and some don't.

3.  EA could not help me with the problem.  This is not a good thing.

4.  All of my other games work perfectly.  The only game (disk) version, that I have had trouble with is an old version of Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, the first game.

There is something either turned on or off, enabled or disabled, the coding is not correct due to a C++ distributable error, or a KB file has the installer messed up for Mass Effect 2 only.

As I said, oddly enough the config files for the first Mass Effect give me the Line 1 Column 40 error message also but the game runs.

DeanBob thank you very much for your input on this.  And thank your friend for me also.  But tonight I am done.  Lol!  Night.

Just a quick question for when you get back on: have you reset your, I assume, overclocked cpu back to normal specs?

This isn't going to help much, but I have no problems on a 64-bit Windows 7 Pro. I assembled the system myself, so it's also lacking in crapware. Your problem is quite perplexing. At this point may I suggest an OS reinstall? If not (I know it's a pain), image your drive and do a reinstall just to see if it works, to eliminate the probability of any hardware issues.

Its on normal.  My i7 quad core that came with the Aurora has the potential, and the machine has the operational software, to be overclocked.  I have been reading on the web and the 920 (2.67GHz) supposedly can be comfortably overclocked to 3.2 ghz.  But I am weary to try it even though my machine is made to upgrade.

I have always been one who does not recommend to people to overclock their system, especially overclocking their video cards. <-----fry city.

The intel processors are on their last six core I believe.  When checking the chip for this pc I read the intel wiki site who keeps up with the latest releases and the 4th six core was due out in Q4 according to them.  Just to keep up.

I am hoping they go to 8 core with the x58 architecture after they finish with the six core.  I have not heard or read anything as of yet.  What is after 64-bit?

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I may have (2) troubles.  I have been looking at both errors as being together but in reality the Line 1 Column XML error message is with the Steam Demo.  A reinstall of Steam is my next thing to try.  Will keep posted.

Sorry the hear you are snowed in.  I will send you a St. Bernard with some Whiskey.  Just In Case.

I posted on the Steam forum.  Steam had a sale on ME2 so I figured what the hey.  I tried all the other versions and even though I could not get the demo to work, I would give it a shot.

I downloaded, hit the play tab, and it started! :-D

I played last night for a few hours.

The only problem that I still have is the Mass Effect 2 installer.  I can not install the free content from the cerberus network that you get when you register your game.  Which also means that any DLC that I purchase will also not install.  Yep, I get the Win 7 nightmare error message, "Mass Effect Installer Has Stopped Working."  Just like when I tried to install using the setup files.

So in a way I am back to square one.  But I can play the regular game at least.  So I am thrilled for that.

I tried WINRAR and Winzip on the 5 bonus content when you register files and neither can help me install.  I wish there was a separate software program that could install/run files without having to go through the Windows Installer.

What EA/Bioware need is a new installer file, or at least an updated one.

Thanks for your help again.

Another update: Fortified by the whiskey you kindly sent, I did make it to the pc shop and T. and I tried installing the disks on 4 different new pcs. It installed on 3, the other failed just like mine. T. said is was a conflict between the new updated drivers and the ea installer but only under certain combinations. He is trying to figure out the exact combo now and will let me know what happens. The problem, as I expected, was with extracting .rar files. He gave me the same advice that you took; just bite the bullet and get it from Steam, as they download the patched version, rather than download and THEN patch, I'm glad to hear you can play man.

A quick question: Did you get the DLC from Steam, or EAdm?

Thanks again for the whiskey. It's the only cure (well, one of two) for these long Montana winters.

EDIT  I just reread your post and saw that the dlc is from cerbrus (sp?) so ignore my question.
