Wynne was at Ostagar before the fatal battle....but did she fight? Where was she when the battle took place...and how did she survive?
I have often wondered about that.

Didn't some of the mages get called back to the tower? I think it had something to do with Uldred...

The magical Fade fairies that shine out of her bum summoned it at the last minute.

Serious answer: the mages fled even before Loghain retreated.

If that's the case, she has set new levels for hypocrisy, going on about Loghain abandoning the king. When she left well before Loghain did. if that's the case.

Before we start screaming about Wynne abandoning the battlefield, let's remember that not every single solider at Ostagar died. There were a few survivors who managed to get away. The Return to Ostagar DLC even begins with finding one  of the survivors.

With that out of the way, Wynne mentions that she was wounded in the battle, so she certainly didn't leave beforehand.

And the presence of the Circle mage who accompanies you into the Tower of Ishal indicates that none of the other mages left Ostagar either.

But there's no way of knowing exactly how Wynne survived the battle without knowing where she was stationed, who was with her, etc.

To be fair to Wynne, the darkspawn did specifically go after the mages at the beginning. It's not Wynne leaving that I had a problem with, it's her leaving and then ****ing at Loghain for doing the same thing.

Beginning of what?

There is a massive difference between being forced to retreat when the battle is already lost and deliberately abandoning the field without engaging the enemy and the other forces are depending on your reinforcements. Because of a battle plan you yourself devised, no less.

The former a tactical necessity, the latter will get you hanged for treason.

Where are you getting this information? I never saw anything showing that the darkspawn sought out the mages at the start of the battle. I don't even know where most of them were.

It is. Loghain calls her out on it in a banter and she doesn't deny it.

We do not find a survivor but a deserter at the beginning.

That fade spirit thingy kept her alive during the retreat she was involved in.

(Sigh) Wynne never says anything in her dialogue with Loghain that indicates she left the battlefield before he did. She states could not have reached Cailan and was lucky to escape the battlefield with her life. Loghain retorts that he could not have reached Cailan either, which conveniently ignores that Cailan was relying on Loghain's battle plan.

If Wynne did not retreat from the battlefield until Cailan was dead, then Loghain abandoned the field long before she did. After all, Loghain sounded the retreat the instant that the signal at the top of the Tower of Ishal was lit. The flare was still burning when Cailan died. Ergo, Loghain abandoned the field before Wynne was forced to retreat.

I've done Ostagar with Wynne and Logain, and Logain calls out Wynne and the rest of the circle mages for the cowardly hypocrits they were. Apparently the Mages were the first to cut and run. Wynne may have been wounded but that begs the question of how she survived the darkspawn partrols and avoided them while wounded.

I think that Wynne cut and ran for her life, and when she didn't think she'd be called out on it, then returned to the tower after a decent amount of time had passed.

Edit PS:  Logain pretty much calls out the circle mages (including Wynne) for abandoning the king when he was very much alive.  The others have it dead right.

Uldred and his supporters left the field early to go back to the Circle of Magi and convince the other mages to support Loghain. That's because Uldred was allied with Loghain and knew exactly what he was planning and how the battle of Ostagar would end.

Because she's a capable mage and an experienced fighter.

We might as well debate how Dog got away from Ostagar while we're at it.

Really? That's strange given that LOGHAIN doesn't know how Ostagar will end until the battle starts. Uldred probably just leaves immediately after the battle is over while Wynne tells us how she stays behind to help the survivors.

Loghain didn't know how the battle will end until the beacon was lit.

Did Loghain plan on retreating from Ostagar or did he not?
