Lip-sync is awesome, better than anything I have ever seen. Can't wait to play this on my PS3 next year. Need to watch more film noir to prepare.

First time I've seen that. Looks cool, but even with the facial expressions, the textures look kind of bad. Maybe it's the engine.

...so, in that game they never move the body when they talk?

That does look pretty compelling.

Another reason why Bioware shouldn't have gotten themselves involved with EA. If Bioware wanted to be bought so badly, they should've made an offer to Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive. Bioware's vision and that of Rockstar seem to be more similar than that of EA.

they first film all the body movements...and then they do a second shooting only head movement...then they combine the two recorded materials into one.

In cutscenes yes, but in that video half the time they seem to have recorded only the head and move the arms like in Dragon Age Origins.

Also, with that sistem they can only copy real actors, so no aliens or any invented character, for that they could as well record the entire guy or even use real video for the cutscenes.

I don't think they would need to really do aliens since their facial expressions aren't as important as getting human ones right. I mean what are the tell-tale features of a turian that's fibbing? Perhaps it would be important for Asari since they are basically being sold as human females, IMO.

Also, isn't that Harbinger in the flesh?

hopefully this thread gets enough responses so the devs can see it but they probably already know about it

its funny that we see the best facial animations weve ever seen ever, and people still find something to complain about like the arms looking like drab. taking scenes from a game set for launch about 1 year for now, i see nothing negative there. i think that 3 minute video clip is one of the many awesome potential things that lie ahead in the future of videogames.

say goodbye to pacmanface.

Performance capture is the way to go. Sadly I think it's too late for ME3. But I hope I'm wrong :D

I think this thread should be renamed "Will ME3 use this technology" to get more response. lol

yeah they've been working on the game since ME2 release right?

This technology produces impressive results, but also requires some serious compromises. Think about it as little more than filming the actor and turning that 2D video into 3D, with a limited ability to change the lighting. Notice how their eyes always reflect the studio environment where the capture session took place.

So if you really want Bioware to use this tech, prepare for some consequences. For one, say goodbye to the detailed graphics of ME2 because these faces would take up too much memory. Even smaller levels, more loading times, more discs for X360 users,

Second, it'd require every single voice actor to actually play their character; so say goodbye to custom Shepards and even the main Sheploo, not to mention Liara and the rest (only Miranda could be played by Yvonne Strachowsky). Oh, and any alien would also require full working prosthetics and animatronics.

Also, it's hideously expensive, so at least half the game's content including conversations and squad banter would probably had to be cut completely.

Mass Effect games use automatic lip syncing and a limited preset of facial expressions that are driven by the actor's voice recording and designer scripting (and in the more detailed cutscenes, some specific animations). This way Bioware can produce the countless hours of character interactions with a reasonable budget at a relatively good quality (I'd say it's still one of the best I've seen in any video game, at least for the main characters).

Recording the same amount of content with this technology would, I dunno, increase the costs of these scenes at least ten times, probably even more. For now, that'd be either too expensive, or a LOT of content had to be cut. And again, no custom Shepard with this tech.

They hit the bottom of uncanny valley with that one and actually dig a bit deeper. Looks almost decent when they show only the head but when the whole model is shown it is bad.

It most likely is too late. Besides, FaceFX isn't that bad.

that would make the game look freaking amazing but think of how many disks we would need to play it on a console, or some crazy expensive graphics card PC users would need? But over all that is what the games in the future will based on.

It is an impressive technology, and it sure is great to depict an actor in a videogame, to make a perfectly realistic copy of someone that already exists, they can also use that when they record the body movements (with clothes and everything) and it will be perfect. Just like a movie.

But it has its limitations. They need to have an actor wich looks just like they want the character to be, they need to set the lights exactly like in the game (and they can't change those in the game after recording the actors), they can't exaggerate the expresions... so don't worry, it won't replace the current way of animating characters, just as photography didn't replace paintings, each will have it's place.

I insist, for cutsenes, why not using the video, it sure would look even more real, like some old games did.

I would prefer for bioware games to use the something like the Incarna charcater creator:
