Hmmm here's a question, what would you do if Lord Laidlaw stepped from the Shadows and asked you "What do you want?"

*five cool points to the first person to get the reference.*

Mr. Laidlaw is never alone.  He always has his associates lurking in the shadows.

Ha! Well done, enjoy your cool points good sir.

Does this mean that one day I'll look up, see Mr. Laidlaw's head on a pike, and I'll wave?

No, it means that one day, far in the future, Lord Laidlaw and his kin (the first ones) shall leave this realm to a younger generation. This new generation will make mistakes, but they will learn to stand on their own, as the wisdom of their forefathers guides them to even greater accomplishments.

Well... I just loved it! The over-the-top animations are just to my taste (what can I say, I'm a fan of Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy), I quite liked the skills (specially that Miasmic Flask thing, I love throwables) and the fact that you can still pause in the middle of the chaos. The graphics where a bit... Odd, but I think it's the quality of the video, as even Mr. Laidlaw was looking "in bad graphics". As a sidenote, I swore he was going to say "I'm Batman" when he steped out of the shadows.

My biggest concern with DA2 is that going so over the top with the talents and animations makes the characters themselves and the story less believable. I won't relate to or feel as much for a spin kicking Hawke who bounces around like Bugs Bunny and can't die in combat unless everyone else dies too.

I haven't read David Gaider's novels but I doubt the characters are spinning and twirling all the time and doing a hail of arrows with one crossbow. I can't help feeling a disconnect when I think about the story of Origins and looking at DA2 gameplay. It feels like the writers might be making a serious, mature RPG but the gameplay designers and animators are making a cool spinning action story-lite RPG.

Less is more, Biodevs.

I think that hits it for me.  My concerns were never (much) about gameplay aspects, but believability and being able to take the story and characters seriously, that does affect how much I enjoy the game.  I'm planning on playing it, but the washed-out, sterile art style together with cartoonish over-the-top animations and the cartoon/ anime look of the characters do not appeal.  I wish it really was grittier and darker.

Oh, also, someone mentioned The Witcher's combat animations.  I agree that those are outstanding.  They used actual captures of a combat choreographer's moves, which gave them realism even if they were speeded up in the game.  I highly doubt a real person could do those flips rogue Hawke is doing.

I'm sorry, but my main impression from this is the dramatic lighting.

Either way you play it,
this lighting's fantastical.

Watch it and you will seeeeeeee
This game's just as tactical (tactical)
When played on your PC
Because it's pause-and-play, party-based
Zoom-it-out or in your face
Either way you end up
This addresses your concerns hopefully, hopefully.

The prospects of this game have actually made my enjoyment of Origins seem less real, which is quite the accomplishment.

Why is there even a PC version coming out at all, again?

The flashiness seems to be rogue exclusive. Well, another reason to play Varric in the party and a non-rogue Hawke, I guess.

As far as breaching the Real Ultimate Power line that's supposed to separate mages from non-mages, the problem with trying to enforce that line is that it leads directly into Linear Warrior Quadratic Wizard syndrome (seriously, how are non-mages going to keep up with human tacnukes without cartoon realism getting involved), which most developers these days are trying to avoid in the interests of trying to at least get in the general ballpark of balance rather than the best party being as many mages as you can make room for. Also the fact that most developers these days have grown up enough to leave the whole jocks vs. nerds rivalry behind.

The balance can be reached by limiting the use of the abilities. If mages regenerated mana much more slowly the "mundane" classes would get to use their abilities more frequently.

Unfortunately, Bioware seems to be so scared of any kind of "downtime" including talent use they balanced combat and classes on a per-encounter basis. Allowing mages to go all out in every single encounter, eliminating any need for thoughtful resource management in the process. Ironically, that also greatly diminished the appeal of mages and powerful magic, making it more of a chore to wipe out mobs with Storm of the Century ad infinitum. I fear they will do it again with DA2.

But still, Origins was balanced around the same concept yet even the top tier Warrior and Rogue talents were not over the top.

No, it still looks bad, but not design wise or at the core, it's just low-res and with no texture filters or AA on it at all.  The core graphics seem good, and at actual PC resolutions with all the bells and whistles on I am sure it will look ace.

Why should a rogue be any different?  I always thought of my rogues as warriors with a few extra tricks up their sleeves, and with Sigrun and Nathaniel I thought that was a good direction for the class to go.  Though I agree, some of the wilder effects in Awakening like Rain of Arrows and Flicker, I did not like those either.  Seems like the writing was on the wall in Awakening about where the franchise was going.

The effects for the mage do look better.

That's not a solution.  I play rogues and mages, or at least I did, and the wild swinging of the 2H sword I've seen in other videos comes under the same rubric really.

It's just the way the designers wanted the game to look- like a cartoon.  Some people obviously like it.

But i need the exclusive character that comes with the sig edition, damn you capitalism. I do agree that EA is a bad thing for the overall integrity of Bioware

If it wasn't for EA, I'm sure that DAO would have had severe cuts and would end up not being as successful as it is today.  EA gave BioWare more time to wrap things up with the game (and include Shale and other quests they were planning on cutting) with the extended amount of time to polish up the game and pumped out many advertisements for the game to get it noticed.

BioWare has a sugar daddy and that daddy will take care of BioWare. ;p

It's funny how Guild Wars 2 videos showing the rogues jumping and rolling around constantly get a lot of praise, but here it's wrong for some reason. The rogue actions looked great to me.

You've seen a Guild Wars 2 video with rogues? Does ArenaNet know about this?

Guild Wars 2 isn't a 'dark fantasy' world.  It's the highest of high fantasy that there ever was.  Everyone and everything has magic.  Plus GW2 is an MMO with its own style.  Appearances and graphics are more important to MMOs due to how much time one should be spending on it.

Of course, Anet has more than twelve armor designs and isn't afraid to put a woman on the cover. :P

She probably means the Ranger.  Or maybe the warrior.  Both can actually dual-wield.  Sorta.

Anet hasn't announced the assassin yet, sadly.

Lovely! I play a mage, so I'll probably be doing more the tactical combat. But it really does look snappy and awesome.

As for UI...eh. For me, BioWare's UIs have always been servicable but neither fantastic or particularly pretty. Except ME2's UI, which was very elegant, but still not what I'd call pretty. If it tells me what I need to know, it's all good. Since that is, you know, the point of a UI.
