My biggest concern with DA2 is that going so over the top with the talents and animations makes the characters themselves and the story less believable. I won't relate to or feel as much for a spin kicking Hawke who bounces around like Bugs Bunny and can't die in combat unless everyone else dies too.
I haven't read David Gaider's novels but I doubt the characters are spinning and twirling all the time and doing a hail of arrows with one crossbow. I can't help feeling a disconnect when I think about the story of Origins and looking at DA2 gameplay. It feels like the writers might be making a serious, mature RPG but the gameplay designers and animators are making a cool spinning action story-lite RPG.
Less is more, Biodevs.
I think that hits it for me. My concerns were never (much) about gameplay aspects, but believability and being able to take the story and characters seriously, that does affect how much I enjoy the game. I'm planning on playing it, but the washed-out, sterile art style together with cartoonish over-the-top animations and the cartoon/ anime look of the characters do not appeal. I wish it really was grittier and darker.
Oh, also, someone mentioned The Witcher's combat animations. I agree that those are outstanding. They used actual captures of a combat choreographer's moves, which gave them realism even if they were speeded up in the game. I highly doubt a real person could do those flips rogue Hawke is doing.
