Hmm, I usually play strategy games multiplayer at work, can't say It's ever occurred to me to RP in them. Kind of the way I don't RP my chess pieces while playing chess. I just see them as tools to be used.
Really I don't see any Bioware game as being RP friendly, they are typically far too restrictive. Don't get me wrong, I try, but there are always numerous instances where I'm taken out of character just because of how limited the story progression and world interaction options are.

I try to role-play in Civilization V. I pick a random leader and then base my civilization building on their personality and history.

Last night, my Macedonian army swarmed over the Roman empire and took their capital. Julius Caesar told me I was a barbarian and I felt guilty but… it's what Alexander would have done!

You can play as Macedonians? Are you sure your not thinking of the Greeks? Maybe they were added in a dlc but I don't remember being able to play as Macedonians :(

The leader of the Greeks is Alexander the Great of Macedon. Macedonians are Greeks.

I wouldn't suggest roleplaying in a multi-player strategy game. Your opponent is attempting to defeat you as a player, not as a character.

I never play multiplayer, so this doesn't concern me.

But not all Greeks are Macedonians.

Kinda! It doesn't take much. Scottish background seems to have pushed me fully into the facialhair++ category.

:-/ Same here.  It really sucks, because I like a clean face. But I can get pretty hairy pretty fast. :(

Indeed. The actual Macedonian army that Alexander used to conquer was only half professional, Macedonian soldiers. The other half was a mix of peoples from other city states and even tribal Greeks.

But it was still the Macedonian army.

I was under the impression that the Macedonians rose to power after the Peloponnesian War...and actually only commanded north eastern Greece under King Philip II of Greece but then Alexander came along and went a bit OTT on the whole 'world domination thing'. It has been a few years since i studied History so I may be wrong but I wouldn't have viewed Alexander as a Greek leader as Maria Caliban says; the classical era of the Greeks was over at this point imo with the destruction of Athens. He was a Macedonion leader who forcibly subjugated the Greeks.

Macedonia was always more of an independent area than a city state anyway.

I will, however, say that the visual effects on sustained spells are very distracting... I'm not fond of conversing with someone in a cut scene and have him pay absolutely no heed to the fact that I'm standing on a glowing red pentagram and appear to be being attacked by a swarm of glowing purple butterflies.

Rock armor...mmmm. There's nothing better at the start of a fight. It's...quite a bit cooler than just coloring you grey, these days.

The only thing DA:O combat needed was making swings a bit faster. One vs one early on (which wasn´t very common anyway) was a bit boring as basic movements were really slow. But here they went too far, I see the movements and think of the swordman from Indiana Jones or the end of the first disc duel from Tron Legacy. I can´t help thinking a sensible and skilled enemy would take Hawke and co for breakfast.

I agree, watching this video made me cringe, I mean those jump-stab things are a blatant rip off from God of War, and the spinning leg kicks are right out of Prince of Persia, I didnt think the combat needed that much flash put into it, I think my fears of this game becoming watered down and commercialized are coming true, I want to like this game, but I have a feeling its going to be a letdown.

So I was roleplaying in the roleplaying game, and you weren't.

I maintain that the core feature of a roleplaying game is always the roleplaying.

That doesn't mean the majority of the content isn't non-roleplay content. This is the problem with combat centered games.

I wait for the day we will have an RPG with almost no combat. Like PS:T, but without the agravating railroading.

Still, like the devs said, it's just the animation that
changed. There is no "manual" dodge (like many feared it to be there,
I myself was among them before seeing this) and it's reasonably tactical at
least on PC. They can use over the top anime-style animations for all I care if
it's just the animation since its effect (whether positive or negative) will
ware thin rather fast. It’s just eye-candy and believe me visual eye candy
never matters past the first hour of the gameplay and will matter even less in
second and third playthroughts. No one would go "OMFG! <3<3<3" about the
graphics in Crysis at the end, that reaction was something you did only once,
at your first playthrough, when things were new, after getting used to them ,
you didn’t even notice them. I do agree that the animations might look over the
top to some, but if the system itself is mostly intact, then I can see little
problem with it.

Yes, the combat did need to be fixed up a little, but the overall Prince of Persia aesthetic of the combat actually takes away from the experience of Dragon Age, for me anyways, when I look at that video, it just doesnt look like Dragon age, I may be overly critical here, but I think DA will be a distant second place to The Elder Scrolls, I will be wating for some reviews of DA, I was going to get it on release but I dont think I am now.

still, it's just looks:P. you don't have to like the changes,
but no matter how much you are turned off by the changes, the fact that they
are just visual changes means you'll get used to them fast and won't care for
them anymore. the same thing happened in DA:O, the people that complained about
the "slow and unresponsive" combat were usually on their first
palythrough (and generally new to CRPGs as well, DA:O's combat had a good
"old school" fell to it for more experienced players).

also it's a good thing you mentioned The Elder Scrolls, the changes that
happened to Oblivion was the exact oposite of what they are doing with DA2,
they didn't changed the looks much (except for the visual upgrade) but the underlying
system changes so much from Morrowind that you couldn't even recognize it
anymore:sick:, and it was broken on top of that (the loot and enemy auto level, the
whole learning and level up system, the magic system all had fundamental
problems that were only solved thanks to active modders, Vanilla Oblivion is a
pain to play because of those problems.)
