Well, if he does dislike mages, that will just add some flavor to my mage playthrough. I couldn't really stand playing a mage in DAO, but it seems a bit less clunky somehow in 2, so I may make mage my first run through. Not decided yet. That or an archer rogue. My two 'signature' classes, more or less. Ranged DPS or magical DPS.
Well, actually, my true calling is a healer in most MMOs, but from what I read, it's not really viable in 2.
spirit healer might be Viable, Just the normal heal is absolutley pathetic. And anders can probaly be a better healer than hawke could ever be.

Well, people keep assuming this.
Yes and it's alot to assume, Maybe his master was his gay lover for all i know. I hope he hates mages so i can atleast have one aspect for me to enjoy with him since the pro mage companions out weigh pro templar so far.
Don't give them ideas!
Do we even know if he hates mages? The footage that was shown not to long ago showed Fenris interacting with a mage!FemHawke. He didn't seem really all that antagonistic.
What footage?
It was like two weeks ago when they were showing some gameplay and they showed the bit where you meet Fenris and go after the magister with him.

No, we don't know that he hates all mages, which was my point.
Sorry, totally missed your post. >_< While I think it might be a possibility, what we've seen *so far* doesn't suggest he will hate a mage Hawke.
sharing my Fenris art for y'all here on the fenris thread !
if you are inclined and like the piece.. feel free to right click image and go to the URL to save the image for your enjoyment.. ( p.s. my thread has the rest of the cast and even a wallpaper size group pic.. )

'xactly.
That's okay. I like melting faces off in damage mode of my Runekeeper just as much as I like healing. So I can melt faces as Mage!Hawke and just let Anders do the healing for me.
Are you all going to still like Fenris if he ends up being the jerk i suspect he is?
What kind of jerk do you expect him to be?
Just kind of Pretencious, Similar to Morrigan but on a more Male viewpoint.
I actually figured he'd be more like Sten, whom I found profoundly irritating until I realised that Sten only respects you when you stand up to him. So, obtuse, unhelpful, self-righteous etc. But with puppy eyes!

Edit: Veeeery nice art. Do like.
Still, that boy needs some shoes.
As far as Fenris's character goes, it depends on what type of jerk he is, and how it fits into the friendship/rivalry/plot/romance scheme. Personally, Morrigan annoyed the hell out of me, so a male version of her probably would too (I definitely tricked her into believing I killed Flemeth). But if I don't end up liking his character for some reason, then I won't include him in my party or talk to him much (just as I did in Origins, I always had Wynne as my mage). And take the rivalry path to the extreme. Maybe I'll have a Fengirl "meh" reaction but no tears will be shed. It also depends on the "type" of Hawke I play.

I loved Morrigan even though she's an utter bee-yotch, so yes.
Did you like her due to her personality or due to her plot Relevancy?(god baby, ect....)
Fenris is optional so will likley have little interaction with main plot.
I liked her personality and funny lines - I didn't realise she was almost crucial to the main plot. (Can you play without her? Technically, I mean - as a player I'd find it really difficult without her.) I don't let usefulness bother me - I like Oghren, but you can get by without him most of the time. I like Shale and she's DLC!

You can not play without recruiting her, she and allistar are the only required companions
I couldn't hear anything, He semt rather arrogant to me though.
That's because you couldn't hear anything. I could (by picking up the speakers and holding them to my ears whilst yelling "SHUT UP LAIDLAW!!!"), so to me he sounded polite and considerate - weird considering he'd just phasepunched that guy in the chest, but he was being complimentary of Hawke, apologetic about the mess, etc.
This is why I'm so curious about him - everyone else in the DA universe seems fairly internally consistent in their character, whereas Fen - I just don't GET that guy.
(I doubt I would have this level of interest if he was fugly, though. )
Tamyn, I am posting your screenie to Super Spoiler thread as well, if you don't mind. Or they are going to keep discussing poor Zevran who looks like he was being attacked by Crow assassins!

Neither do I. I mean, he punches a guy through the chest. And then just turns around and is all polite and courteous. I think there's quite an explosive temper under that veneer. March 8th needs to get here so I can dive in and psychoanalyze like a mad person.

There's also that clip from earlier where he's slamming his hands onto the table, yelling at Aveline...he looked pretty pissed there. Maybe he is an angry drunk?

When you get to Lothering, you can tell Morrigan to get lost. Alistair you're stuck with until the landsmeet. Morrigan does come back on the eve of battle to offer you the dark ritual though, even if you did make her leave earlier.
Fenris doesn't seem to have much tied to the plot since he can be skipped, but DG also said they tried to have all the characters have "a hook".

What? Really? Dang it, somehow I missed that in conversation. Oh well, tricking her was, as Zevran and Alistair said, fun.
And a "hook," you say? Whatever could the good Ser mean? I can't wait to find out.

Indeed, if you're interested, here's a link: While *this* particular scene was done later in the game, it can be triggers right when you get to Lothering.

David Gaider wrote...
There are two things that need to exist when creating a companion:
1) A place in the story.
2) A hook.
#1 doesn't always happen if #2 is really strong, so sometimes we forget... and then we regret it later on. A place in the story means that there is something going on in the plot (or one of the plots) that is very central to what that character is about. They care about it, so you do too. Plots can be abstract things, especially when they relate to a world you have only a vicarious stake in, so followers serve to personify those conflicts.
But #2 is enough. There has to be a hook-- for me, not the player. Something that I want to say with a character, either a moment I know I want them to have, a twist on a romantic archetype, a thing that they have which makes me excited to write them. If there isn't a hook, no matter what we do the character will be boring. That can happen, too, in which case you have to create a hook. For yourself. Nobody else needs to care about it.
For Morrigan, the hook was the Dark Ritual. I knew that moment would exist almost before the rest of the game did. Alistair didn't start off having a hook, and I realized it after I began writing him. He was a distrustful, surly sort and I hated it. So... what to do? I wanted to make his dialogue fun, the sort of person who guys wouldn't hate because he was a buddy. Since I was watching BtVS at the time, it came to me when I was (predictably) analyzing Joss Whedon's method of delivering dialogue. Anachronistic, sure, but could it be done in fantasy...? I wanted to try.
There was a hook for Fenris, but I can't tell you what it is yet. It's a spoiler. The tattoos came later (and, amusingly, before I even saw Jack), but there was an element to Fenris that made me want to write him. His #1 is also significant, which is important as I mandated that every DA2 character would need a #1. It's a more personal story, after all, without a "YOU MUST SAVE THE WORLD NO YOU MUST" thing going on-- and thus the ciphers are that much more important.
Everything else after that fact is just mechanics and plot documents. And finding the voice. That's separate and not always easy, and sometimes doesn't come until you hit the Moment-- which could happen right away or halfway through writing the character.

Well some of the descriptions of Fenris' abilities suggest that he does indeed have quite the temper he's TRYING to hide beneathe a facade of calmness.
I really don't see him as being a jerk. At least not to people that help him (such as Hawke). Anyone that tries to get in his way though? FENRIS PAAAAAAAWNCH.
@fighterchicks: In fairness, she annoyed me the more I went on. But I recruited every party member possible and kept them around to the final battle.
And that quote by Gaider? So mysterious and fascinating. I admit I did like the Dark Ritual aspect, even if I didn't like Morrigan herself. So I think I'll be able to appreciate Fenris's place in the story, even if I end up wishing he'd phase himself into the fires of Mt. Doom. YMMV.

Kali MAAAAAA!
Ahem. I agree, although I can still see the potential for lots and lots of conflict with hawke and Fenris. I hope there are ways to really rile him up and get him to drop the facade. I want shouting matches!
