It was to me.
I don't know what his issue is going to be. I thought for a while that it would be the magister, but if his recruitment quest is about going after him, I'm not sure anymore. I like your thoery, but I think it could be the other way, trying to really help him control his temper, that leads to rivalry. Whatever the case, I'll just do whatever's in character for my Hawke. I get the feeling that that will entail lots of button pushing.
See, i have to doubt the reverse because it seems like he was already trying to do just that. Mind you he may be a bit lax. It just seems like to me if he was leaning toward the aggressive he would be... well... more standoff-ish.
There were also comments by Mike during the recruitment quest video that may shed some early light on the Friendship/Rivalry. Mike mentioned something about how Fenris can either dwell on whats happened to him (possibly seeking out vengeance) or simply accept it and try to move on. In the short story he's not actively seeking out his pursuers, so that and his calm facade says he may be TRYING to just move on but the Magister won't let him. The magister thing itself seems to mostly get sorted out quickly but that doesn't undo the injustices done to him already. His life was stolen from him (as Mike put it).
It's too early to say what exactly friendship and rivalry does to effect this... But i'm thinking how Fenris comes to terms with his own existence is a pivotal point of the character. Afterall, how would you handle being in a world with nothing to reference (as in memories/a past)? Its a clean slate, to become whatever sort of person the environment impresses upon you.
Ultimately all these things are the musings of someone very bored. We'll find out for sure in a few days, if a huge leak doesn't happen (which i'm really surprised hasn't happened because we know for a fact a handful of people have the console version of the game early and are playing it).
EDIT: I could also add that a lack of a personal identity may be the reason behind his Elven Pride. He has no other identity to lean upon, afterall. It'd be nice to see him find his own worth, his own person.
