I actually like Fenris a lot more after dumping him.  My flirty Lady Hawke got his romance scene, after which point he leaves her.  Then I went and did Anders's Act 2 quests, and well, it's hard to resist that sexy kiss so she ended up hooking up with Anders and telling him that Fenris left her.  True enough, and I just hadn't found Fenris compelling enough to that point to continue pursuing him.

But!  I don't know if it's just a glitch, but he continues wearing his red scarf and the Amell crest even after my Lady Hawke moved on.  And he also got the banter in which Merrill teases him for looking at Hawke with big puppy eyes and being in love with her.  I posted these in the Anders thread, but these banters with Anders about it are so sad and adorable:

Anders: You were an idiot to leave Hawke
Fenris: And you were fast enough to replace me.
Anders: I love her.  You have no idea what that means.
Fenris: Do not bare your heart to me, mage, unless you would have me rip it out.

Fenris: You... are living with Hawke now?
Anders: What of it?
Fenris: Be good to her.  Break her heart, and I will kill you.

These are SO SQUEE.  I think I'm going to go back and give Fenris a Hawke for real this time now, once I know exactly how to get the "glowy kiss".

omg that second conversation is just so... Awwww!!! Image IPB I'm gonna have to try this sometime.  I wonder if these conversations happen if I romance Anders with my male Hawke after Fenris leaves him... Huh.  Definitely gonna have to see how that goes.  I think I may have ruined my chances at romance with Anders, though, since I ultimately rejected him during that scene where he left out milk for the cat.  That's the scene where the romance starts, so I don't think I have a chance at it again. :(

By the way, I recall David Gaider once posted that Fenris had a specific hook because of which he is in the game. In fact, he posted all of the companions had one.

With Anders and Isabella those are quite obvious: the unavoidable ending and the quinari fallout.

I feel like a complete idiot asking this considering how much I adore the character and the fact that he was in my party 24/7... but what was Fenris' hook exactly? :P

lolwhut a hook? That's weird.

No idea what Fenris has... or anyone else but those you mentioned actually. Maybe it's the fact he "dumps" you no matter what. But that would only happene dif you romanced him soo...

So I'm rival-mancing Fenris right now. I finished my Anders playthrough romance so now it's Fenris turn. Does he end up with the champion or leaves you too?

I'm pretty sure that Fenris's hook was his hatred for mages.  Most of the characters in the game either are all for mages (Merrill, Anders, Bethany, Isabela believes they deserve freedom) or "don't really care/situational" (Varric, Aveline).  The only ones you can really get anti-mage points with are Carver,  Fenris, and occasionally Sebastian.  As you can see, with his special reasoning for hating mages,  you can get a feel for the other side of the conflict.

However,  most people tend to rival him anyways, so his purpose is a lot less obvious.

Depending if you max his rivalry meter (and possibly how you handle his quests?), he can stay with you no matter what. He did on my rivalry romance track.

Fen's opinion on mages isn't necessarily that they're all bad though, I had a very nice dialogue between him and Anders where he said Bethany was a strong mage, so I was happy he liked my sister. I got the epilogue to say he stayed with me though <3 glad to not fall into the Isabella glitch that a lot of people are having

I didn't intend to rival him to begin with. My first Hawke developed a significant anti-mage stance over the course of the game she still managed to get a fair bit of rivalry with Fenris simply because of choosing certain dialogues in conversations (she was mostly an Aggressive-type with some Diplomacy if called for it). I think now he's at about 60% friendship, but hnnngh.

I'll have to keep this in mind whenever I get around to doing a "perfect" run-through of the game with her.

And it's so easy to rack up the rivalry points with a Mage. I kinda wanna do the romance with my Male Hawke (who's a mage) but hnnnnnnnngh. Seems so typical. Still, might be fun to give it a shot with a rivalry slant to it, maybe.

That said, I didn't expect to like Fenris as much as I did. Guess that's what happens when you go in with barely any expectations about a character, eh? Hehe.

If you're playing as the mage he says the same thing about Hawke. :)

See, I am not so certain that his opinions of mages is his plot hook.

Look at it this way:
Anders - ending
Isabella - qunari mess
Merril - mirror (I think that thing has a lot more significance than the game reveals. Possibly in the next game?)
Varrick: deep roads expedition that leads to omnious idol + allusions to 'song' possibly something related to what darkspawn hears + secret warden activity for the next game?
Aveline+siblings -? Importance of family? That another murky one for me
Fenris -? If it is indeed a justifiable hatered for mages, it doesn't really fit with the other hooks...

Not to say it's a bad thing. But I'd love David to comment on that :).

Can we share fan art in this thread?

Here's my pithy contribution to Fendom. However, the caveat is that it's NSFW (despite the fact you can't see anything, um, vital) and I don't know what the rules are for such things that skirt the line in the main forums.

Fenris, I guess *nsfw mostly*

Thanks for looking. Maybe next time I'll draw him with clothes. X>

That is a beautiful piece Meta! :D I'm sure fanart is welcome here, just look at the first post. >.>

Has anyone heard any fun things Fenris says during combat? Or well fun and fun. And if they change whether you romance him or rival/friendship. I doubt it though.

Though I think he said something (couldn't hear what) quickly followed by "most unwise" when Hawke fell in battle. It's also quite interesting how he's the only one who doesn't shout during battle (I think, it said something about that in the wikia) Even his taunts are calm.

I guess one needs to turn off all the other sounds if you want to hear what people actually say.

Clicky!

In this, at the begining, you say "-If you want a friendship romance, hate mages and always side to give them back to the Circle. No exceptions." But I friendmance'd him, dragging him on every mage-related quest I could, always siding with the mages unless there was blood magic/demons involved, and he never really crept over to rivalry with me(he did get a few +rivalry, but it was never much and everything else always had him creeping back to friendship).
Not saying you're completely wrong, just that it is possible to be more pro-mage and still have a friendship romance with him.
Even sided with the mages in the end, and got him to stay with me. The whole
Hawke: ("join me!" option) I guess it's too much to ask to die with you by my side?
Fenris: I... Image IPB *ditches Meredith*

was adorable. Image IPB

Awesome. Thanks! Yeah I like rival-mancing everyone though...I mean at least the guys so far. I haven't tried any of my male Hawkes on the ladies but I like Merrill, she's sweet~

Anyone know how to continue a romance with Fenris? I think I'm in act 3, I've done bitter pill and the alone quests, had questioning beliefs and started the romance. He left after a romance scene in Hawke Estate and now I don't really know how to continue it. I got him a gift that I picked up in the alienage in act 2 and he's at around 60% friendship. Anyone know how to keep going?

If you do everything right, he will be back and apologised. Don't worry, dear.  It's part of his romance plot. Brooding Fenris.

I kinda wish I'd gotten that version, lol. It just seems more romantic for him to initially leave but he can't stay away long. Fenris barely even blinked when my mage sided with the mages. He merely said "I don't like this but I won't abandon you now." I think if you don't have 100% rivalry or friendship, but are close, you get the version where he leaves and you can convince him to return in the Gallows.

If anyone could post a video of a romanced Fenris returning to Hawke at the Gallows, that'd be great! :) I'd love to see it.

I definitely, definitely am sure that Fenris's hook that made David want to write him was his hatred for mages. It was a VERY unpopular stance going into DA2, and the character who argued against magic -- considering how important that decision is in this game -- had to argue it VERY well, and had to have VERY compelling reasons for doing so.

Enter Fenris!

My guess is that David really wanted to be the one to handle this, myself. It was tricky, making you agree with a POV that seems so unfair at first glance, and he did a wonderful job of it. I usually came out of Anders's and Fenris's banters not sure WHO to agree with.

It was kinda sad. When I sided with the mages he said something along the lines of "I won't help them, not even for you." Image IPB though, thinking about it now, I think him leaving first does seem a bit more romantic. Image IPB
It was probably because I(apparently) didn't actually finish the romance with him. Hell if I know how, exactly. I never got any conversation after the thing with his sister, no "forgiveness" talk, no kiss at the Gallows... but Varric still said that Fenris stayed with Hawke in the end. Image IPB oh well.

I'll just...
Have to try again. Image IPB

Edit: I agree with the above ^^^. I adored Fenris, well, for many reasons, but one of them being that he would bring up a point that I just couldn't argue with. Though he did have a tendency to make comments about mages being dangerous, that all I could think was "so are non-mages! A regular person in the same situation can be just as dangerous!" and so on.

:huh:So do you know how to trigger it then? I was under the impression I started the romance too late. I tend to screw up lots on first playthroughs of things.

@ gamer_girl: I think you just flirt with him every chance you get. There is an "in particular" moment, I think, that starts it. Might be that first conversation at his mansion, where he throws the wine at the wall. Not entirely sure.

I'm sure this has probably been mentioned before, but I just completed a section of the game that caused me to realize it, so I thought I'd share:

Fenris? ....... Ya, he's Wolverine.:?

1: Both the names Wolverine and Fenris (at least according to Fenris) mean "Little Wolf".

2: Both are brooding, male anti-heroes who stab people with their hands.

3: Both willingly underwent an invasive and torturous procedure, transforming them into a living weapon,  which in-turn lead to a case of amnesia, blanking out their entire life previous to that event.

4: (I realize this is a rather weak point, but still worth noting I think) Both of their "actual names" begin with the letter "L" (Logan and Leto)

.......just thought that was interesting:whistle:

I've done that conversation already haha. As far as I'm aware the romance is started, but he just kind of walked away one time and said "forgive me" after "visiting" in Hawke's Estate. Now I don't know how to get them to make up. I'm trying to figure out if I can still trigger it being this late in the game (act 3). Hopefully. :(
