Back on topic-- all of the Fenris specific skills dealing with threat are to reduce threat-- which means his tree is not good for tanking at all.

I'm gonna go into the game and have Fenris down a respec potion and see if I can build something that could accomplish  - generally - what my 2HW is.  Be back in a bit.

I was just thinking that, but since you're on it, I'll just sit here patiently and stare at the tech support threads. :D

Well love them or hate them, I think they definitely broke out of their typical mold with the two guys in DA2.

EDIT: But I do wish Varric was an option. I'd trade Sebastian's 'chaste

But the two girls kind of fit the Madonna/Wh*re complex to a t, so there is that.

(I have a whole conspiracy about how Bioware was completely trolling us with all the romances this time through. Healing Power of Sex? REALLY?)

Oh, can we please not call Isabela a wh*re in this thread, too? I really hate it when I see that language used for her just because she's sexually active :( And this is the Fenris thread! I can see complaints about Merrill and Isabela being "stereotypical" romances but I just really hate that word and anything like it. :(

First, what my character is currently running as per the Vanguard thread - all credit to the OP. He has quite a few more total abilities than Fenris due to books and such, so that's to be expected:

Image IPB

Here's Fenris. I would finish up his entire unique tree as well as continue to upgrade Vanguard. Fenris gets a Holy Smite-like ability in his own tree (it's an AOE blast) which works out well for him. As a consequence of his not having read any Tomes in my game he also lacks Second Wind, which is pretty key, but Fenris does gain a Stamina Recovery ability in his own unique tree. There are also always potions:

Image IPB

Make no mistake though, you really can't think much like a typical tank if you play this way. Sure you want to ensure that the enemy is engaging your 2HW and not anyone else, but you can't stand there and take hits, especially against bosses - you have to move always, hit them from the flank, get out of the way of their attacks. In other words, once I started channeling my Age of Conan experience of moving frequently I got way better at this style, heh. If that comparison puts you off, the OP has videos in his thread that show the same thing.

Sorry, but Fenris unique talent tree doesn't have a single talent that reduces threat.

Instead it has:

Lyrium Ghost
Def + 20%
Crit +20%
Damage resistance +10% (+10% more w/ upgrade)
Magic resistance +10% (+10% more w/ upgrade)

Deflect
Magic Resistance +25%

Friendship bonus
Magic resistance +10%

And Sipirit Pulse with the upgrade (stun) could be useful for tanking.

No these are not threat talents, but they're damage reducing ones which is an aspect of tanking.

I wasn't calling her a wh*re (because the argument that follows is that I was also calling Merrill a Madonna, when really, she's just an idealist with too many ideas), I was saying that she and Merrill fit that traditional sort of stereotype which is entirely the fault of the fact that a large percentage of gamers are heterosexual men, not the fault of the character.

I have nothing against Izzy, except that it feels like she was designed to fit a stereotype that I, as a bisexual woman, resent the hell out of.

Fair enough, I guess. I'm also a bi girl but I have no issues with Isabela -- I like her sexual freedom a lot, actually -- but to each their own. I guess I'm just tired of that language on the forums since it's become so pervasive. :(

I guess I just cast Spirit Pulse as a threat reducer because after he uses it, fewer people are waling on him. I suppose that's probably the post-stun confusion and not direct aggro redux though.

But I'd like to point out that none of these /draws/ threat eaither which was at least half of my point.

I dont think the Vanguard thread has the 2HW "tank" speccing into anything that increases threat either. The point is that stuff dies so quickly that the "tank" doesn't really need to hold aggro. And for the threat management it does need comes from Varric.

Essentially my only point is thought that you might be able to replicate the strategy in that thread with Fenris.  Which would be on topic for the Fenris thread.  Not really trying to make a greater point about the nature of tanking in general, or change anyone's minds about it.

Yeah, and I respect that-- I'm just a cynic. Plus I had a conversation IRL about her in DA2 today that made me realize that men are still pigs. It's sad, RL.

Men aren't pigs. Men are idiots. And women are crazy.  Also we don't speak or think in the same language, but that's a separate point.

I can certainly attest to the latter. :D

And I suppose idiots works-- I wish I had the heart to repeat what he said about Anders's aggressive romancing style. Because it was a prime example of idiocy. (Also, how hard is it to pick the broken heart option?)

Banter with Fen and Merill that made me squee

I loved that dialogue because for me it came after he left her, so it was like an affirmation that he still cared. So bittersweet.

Me too! We're in act 2 limbo and it sucks. I'm ready to skip all side quests to get to act 3.

The first time I got that banter was when my Hawke had gone for Anders.  I felt like a first class heel.  And it gave me hope I may get him back (nope nope nope).

So. I'm going to steer back into Fenris territory with a question. I just finished the game with a Fenris LI, I'm starting again and going the rival route. Now, I could be a stupid with a wild imagination but I thought there was an interchange between Hawke and Fenris about his sexual past. My question is, "When, if at all, did this exchange occur?"

Seriously though, I think about this game a lot so I could have made this up in the interim between playing and wanting to play. I ask because I could have sworn there was some serious weirdness with the question that might have alluded to him being seriously molested as a slave. Although that wouldn't be surprising, I just want to know if I made it up.

Yay first Dragon Age 2 post made me sound incredibly crazy! But any help would be excellent.

Think you made it up :P

At 50% you get the quest to talk to him in Act 2 and at least there you will get the option to hear that he hasn't been close to anyone, at least not since his memories were wiped.

Thanks to Zevran and Isabela (and a nice number of reloads to try different outcomes...) I got to see this rare, if not the only, moment of comradeship between Fenris and Anders. For once, seems like they think alike!
I did never see on youtube the encounter going like this. I was with Isabela (100 friendly never romanced), Fenris, Anders. That's what happened at the ened of the quest.

Zevran: My dear Isabela, it has been a delight to see you again. You travel in fine company.
Isabela: That's it? You're leaving? What about sex?
Zevran: Ah, Isabela. I did so miss you.
Isabela: That's because you have ******-poor aim. Thankfully, you've other uses.

And they walked away, Zevran didn't even try to flirt with my Champion nor I could say anything in that dialogue. But they did!

I don't recall that dialogue, but the first 20 hours of my only complete playthrough were... you know, 0100 on the 8th to 2100 on the 8th, so I might not remember either?

I can tell you for a fact it hasn't been mentioned at all in my rivalmance mage playthrough as of the end of Act I.

There is dialogue about Hadriana where he says she tormented his sleep though. I liked that for a hint of molesty-past. <.< *evil*

@SteamPunks Did you complete the Questioning Beliefs quest where he's been drinking quite a bit and comments on how he's never been with anyone before? The flirty arm grab option won't show up unless you initiate the romance there.

Yeah, was I understanding that wrong or before sleeping with Hawke, Fenris was a virgin (whether that means at all ever or just post-branding ritual)?

although, I'm pretty sure that's just in his memories.  We don't know if Leto has had relations with anyone before.

Also the discussion earlier that implied if you aren't romancing Fen, he gets somethin-somethin from Isabella

I didn't even get that he was saying he was a virgin, though.  I thought he was talking about love and letting people get close.  What he says is he has no memories of before, and that he hadn't had sex with anyone since he was escaoed.  He says nothing about when he was a slave.  Denarius says something about how skilled he is (and it seems like he's talking about sex), but my mind goes in ick places apparently.

However, it's not implied that Fenris and Isabela have sex -- it's stated outright.  They had sex, and they're making plans to do it again.  I got the banter, though, after my Hawke went from Fenris to Anders.  Fenris was still wearing the scarf!  I don't know if you get it if he wasn't with Hawke first.

Wanted to ask this for a while now so I hope you guys give your opinions.

In Fenris forgiveness talk, in the flirt option Hawke says "Whereever it leads, I hope it means we stay together."

Am I the only one who thought it was pretty freaking brave of Hawke to say that? They had been essentially broken up for 3 years and Hawke had no real way of knowing that Fenris still felt that way about her/him like the player controlling Hawke would.

I personally was shocked the first time I heard it and rewatching the scene it still makes me frown at times. Just seems to sound unbelievable to me. I'd be a total mess if we'd been broken up for 3 years.

It never seemed off in my other playthroughs.  Then again, I always did 'All that Remains' after Fenris left my Hawke at the end of 'The Bitter Pill'.  He shows up and trys to comfort her, so that kinda said to me that they stepped back onto ground that was comfortable for him.  That's how it seemed to me, anyways.  Then again, sometimes men wont discuss something bothering them for years, anyways...That would be the voice of experience piping in there...>.>;

This is how I see it as well.  They're back together, but in a more comfortable space.  This is further reinforced by the encounter with Zevran (I got that before that discussion) where Fenris is jealous.  Plus, his ambient comment even before then is, "I remain by your side."
