I've read so many places (not just in this thread) how everybody rival romanced Fenris if they were a mage. I, personally, had no problem maxing out his friendship meter. In fact, he was the second one to become completely loyal to me (Aveline being the first, followed closely by Varric). Besides his initial recruitment conversation when he noticed I was a mage and asked what I wanted (to which I replied "Survival") and when I took him to the Gallows and we discussed the chantry and I said it was a broken institution (not that I wanted to free all the mages, or that the chantry was right) I never got any other rival points from him---I also find it incredibly endearing how when we walk into the Gallows he shows concern that perhaps I shouldn't be there; it made me smile a little, and I told him I'd be careful.

And I took him everywhere with me. I got a lot of points with him, though, because my Hawke did not tolerate blood magic at all. And I never even entertained the notion of listening to demons. I killed them on sight. There was only one instance when I didn't take him to a conversation, simply because I didn't want to deal with his +10 rivalry, but that was it. I even managed to walk a fine line between being Merrill's friend and condemning blood magic. A very fine line indeed.

I've also read how people think it's stupid that, just because you're his friend, he stops disapproving of your support of mages (and how he sides with them in the final battle). Throughout much of Act II I had his friendship meter maxed, which was after A Bitter Pill (because that's always one of the first to trigger for me), and I always imagine he's making it up to me for sleeping with me then leaving me.

And I find it incredibly romantic that he would go against his prejudices because he loves Hawke.

Also, I think all the end romance scenes pale in comparison to when he tells Hawke not to die, to which I always reply that I'll only make that promise if he does.
"Nothing is going to keep me from you." :wub:And I further died of happiness inside when Varric says that circumstances forced all of Hawke's friends from her side...well, except for Fenris...<3

I'm going to go watch that scene again...

P.S. Sorry, this is so long, but the sarcastic response is also priceless:

Hawke: I didn't quite catch that. Can you speak up?
Fenris: Then let me make it clearer for you.

*swoon* Are you my long lost twin? Because you just described how I play and my thoughts <3

I did the same. There's something quite lovely about playing a mage that he comes to respect because you're "strong", and you go against what he says "all mages" do.
...also adds some awkward moments, when he says things like "mages always do things like this!" and poor Hawke just sort of quirks an eyebrow at him.

Awwww, I like the rivalry romance with my mage.  I mean, it's not difficult to either max rivalry or friendship with him if you take him with you -- he has strong opinions on many things (this goes for all classes).  But I guess it depends on how you want to RP your mage.  One way is no better or worse.

I also let him put his fist through that slaver's chest to get him to talk during the Wayward Son quest....then I killed all the slavers. He loved that. I did cycle him out for Isabella, though, for when I finally caught up to the people holding the half-elf (I'm not even going to try to spell his name). I was hoping I would get some points with her for letting him go free. Seems she supports everyone being free...

I wondered because he was slightly less nasty to my rival mage in a romance than to the one where she was romancing Anders when it came to the book.  Just slightly less nasty, though (no comment about teaching her pet slave to read).

I planned to rival romance him as a mage and friendship romance him as a mage. I also need to rivalmance Anders as a non mage. Plus get to Isabela and Sebastian. Sigh. then finish Origins/Awakening/WH with my Cousland and two dwarves, and a dalish, and wait for the import bugs to get fixed  and do it all over again.

;) We can be twins if you want. I knew I would like Fenris, by his look, his backstory, and that short story, but I think he is now my favorite. He might even be eclipsing Thane in my irrational love for a video game character.

I also love it (though that may be a little harsh, considering I was playing with people's emotions) that Anders kind of hated the fact that I chose to be with Fenris, instead of him, even though Fenris hated mages.

so how do I get the Fenris romance now? Since it didn't work out the first time, at "The Bitter Pill" quest I got the option "Don't go!" but nothing happend ... no angry wall kissing, he just left q.q (he also didn't visit me before that)

so I went back to my first savepoint right before "Questioning Beliefs", unfortunatly I've already slept with Isabella at that point >.< but we said one-nightstand no feelings. So can I still geht Fenris and then how exactly? I think I'm at 50 % rivalry (playing male mage hawk).

When is this, I'd like to not miss it on my current rogue:wizard:

During the final battle (for me it was in the Gallows, because I supported the mages, being a mage myself ;)). After Anders blows up the Chantry and you fight through Lowtown there will come a time when you have a moment to prepare. You can speak to your companions. Talk to Fenris and during the second dialogue choice (I always use the flirt line during the first dialogue choice), after he tells you not to die because he can't imagine living without you, you can choose "What are you saying?"--which is the sarcastic option and gets you "Then let me make it clearer for you" response. For my canon playthrough I chose "I feel the same." which gets you the whole "Nothing is going to keep me from you." line.

Hope my description wasn't too confusing.

On my rivalmance pt I had to work at getting rival points because my blood mage was killing slavers, then would turn around and free mages, so it ping ponged back and forth.  My current pt is a lawful good mage, and she has no trouble at all getting friendship points, though she's kind of a hypocrite since she's living free as an apostate but supporting templars.  But you do get good friendship points with him for things like telling Merrill "why not call it what it is- a demon."

I'm not going to be able to sustain interest enough to do a whole pt for the other LIs, though.  It's kind of a bummer that I don't like either of the female LIs.  I miss Morrigan.  Image IPB

Pretty much the same as my mage playthrough. I had reservations about blood magic and demon possession. My relationship with Merrill was rival the whole way through -- wouldn't even give her the artifact. I struggled with Fenris in Act 1 because the quests were so different in tone that I constantly canceled out my friendship gains with the rival gains. It wasn't until Act 2 that things stablized and he ventured into the friendshp territory more easily.

And I completely braced myself for him leaving my Hawke when I ultimately decided to side with the mages. (I lost Alistair at Landsmeet for simliar reasons.) And I was shocked and touched that he stayed devoted to my Hawke. That was great. I also love how the ending was simple -- the chosen love interest stayed with Hawke. No spectulation on what they went on to do. To "for a time" or disappearing acts. Nothing. The game felt whole and provided a sense of closure that I didn't really have with Origins.

I think it's amazing how giving gifts when on the rivalry path does not patch things up. It stirs up resentments. Because I can see how giving a book to someone you are a rival with, when they can't even read, would make them loathe you, as if you were mocking them.

Of course, I gave him the book, told him I would teach him to read, and he was grateful (because he was my loyal friend/lover) :) I also like how if you go to the library in the Hawke estate and look at the books eventually you'll get a comment about how Fenris' reading has improved and you need to pick out another book for him.

P.S. Apparantly, he also hates the statue above the mantle in the library.

I kinda like that Hawke isn't as smooth as s/he thinks s/he is. Sarcastic/charming options usually just earn you a WTF from the other person, especially hilarious since Hawke always has that stupid smirk on their face and the other person is just annoyed.

I have school interrupting my playtime  again. So I have something dull and frustrating (as you see on twitter alot...lol) keeping my desire to escape alive.  I generally play mages that hate blood magic, so my next one will be no different. She'll hate it because it DOES make it worse for mages all over to be seen as anything but dangerous. She resents it because blood magic in her eyes is why she's had to hide all of her life.  I'll never agree with templars though. My first mage was my "see the game" mage the next one will be more RP.

Sounds like my first mage, minus Lawful Good, much more Chaotic Good and Chaotic Neutral with several decisions. I RP'd her in my head as that her father raised her to a point where she naturally avoided the templars, but she hid that she believed in the Circle and wondered if things would have been better off if Bethany and herself had gone to the Circle.

Sort of fun-- not Kelli crazy, but at the same time, not Anders crazy.

Yeah I agree, I love it when people aren't impressed and/or tell you off.  Hawke should get to be awkwardly inappropriate sometimes, too.

What gift was it?  If it was the book, tell him that he has had enough time to sit around and mope that he has time to learn how to read (the bottom dialogue option).  He kinda snaps back but he kind of relents and thanks you for the gift.

I like giving him the tough love.
