You said a while back that other than Valen, there had been other character influences for Fenris but you didn't want to say because people take that out of context. Now that we've met the man as he is, care to comment on what those other character influences were?

My intention is to avoid talking about where I take my inspiration from, primarily because many people can't tell the difference between inspiration and derivation. That might not be you, but I'm not taking any chances. Sorry!

And the red thing on Fenris's arm is Hawke's favor. As in a scarf.

Valen, eh? That was my first thought. It felt familiar, in a good way. Valen was my favorite romance, and I'm glad the Fenris romance had a few thematic and emotional call-backs to it.

A favor, eh? I knew it was a symbol of the romance, but a favor adds a nice bit of flavor to it - knightly.

Grrr. How in the world are you rivalmancers pulling this off?
You get +15 Rival...then you go and get him a gift and you get +10 Friendship.

Tips, pleaseee?

When in doubt, I make my Hawke say something rude or sarcastic and that tends to get rivalry points... usually ends up meaning "Mages are a-okay!" when it comes to Fenris. Except I need to replay the entire romance because I remember earning a lot of friendship points, yet getting the rivalmance scene. Go figure.

Another random thing of note to me that I'm sure came up earlier in the thread: Fenris' stance. He is slightly hunched, legs slightly bent, sort of like he's creeping around and trying not to get noticed. That is a GREAT touch, imo. Habit of subservience that just doesn't go away.

Don't pick up the gifts unless he's already at max rivalry.  See above ^ - he's not all that impressed with them anyway.  Heh.

It depends on where you are in the rivalry/ friendship scale. The further you are on the rivalry scale with a companion the most likely they are going to react in anger towards your gift and give + rivalry. I had Fenris at over 70% rivalry and he lashed out at my Hawke when I gave him the book and offered to teach him to read thus earning me +15 rivalry. The same happened with Merril who I had more rivalry on. I gave her the gift and she accepted it and gave me +15 rivalry too.

What gift was it?  If it was the book, tell him that he has had enough time to sit around and mope that he has time to learn how to read (the bottom dialogue option).  He kinda snaps back but he kind of relents and thanks you for the gift.

I like giving him the tough love.

Yeah it was the book.
Haha that is great. I just used my usual option but it's pretty apparent that I'm going to have to toughen it up in order to complete the romance. Since I'm all for the mages in this one but keep gaining approval here and there that keeps my friendship/romance bar in neutral.

What about the sword?

I kinda like that Hawke isn't as smooth as s/he thinks s/he is. Sarcastic/charming options usually just earn you a WTF from the other person, especially hilarious since Hawke always has that stupid smirk on their face and the other person is just annoyed.

This is why sarcastic/funny Hawke is my favorite Hawke.  She's not charming the pants off everyone she meets.  She gets a lot of "What the hell is wrong with you" blank looks and eye rolls and threats of violence.  And she is either blissfully unaware of this or just doesn't care.  I absolutely love it.  My Hawke really is a borderline Cloudcuckoolander sometimes.

He is if you don't give him much of a chance and my character didn't really.  Although I did get to see what kind of stoic David Gaider meant earlier... the kind of stoic that acts like it's no big deal you just told him off, apologizes for offending you, and then hits you with +20 Rivalry.

+20 rivalry isn't a bad thing it just plays  out differently. Good things happen at full rivalry just as they do at full friendship. It's just more of a "hey we aren't friends but bI respect the hell out of you". Too bad you see it as a bad thing.

There's a lot of assumption in this post.  I didn't say it was bad, I said his reaction to it was indicative of his personality.  And in a different post I even say that I liked that about him.

I tried to do Sarcastic-Funny-Charming every time with my second character, it really doesn't work.  However I find if I wait for context-appropriate moments to joke, humor, or whatever - Hawke ends up being fairly funny.  I mean, not laugh out loud funny, but at least not facepalmy and embarassing.  I really don't think that we're meant to exclusively select one option, or even come close to it.  It's not like Mass Effect.

Granted I fell into the trap of doing it, so maybe they need to mix up the presentation of the icons a bit.

I'm not sure, but by the end of his personal quest in Act 2, I was in full rival status with him, so after that, I could be ultra nice to him and not suffer decreases to rivalry.  It's actually VERY easy to rival him and not have to be a jerk to him about slavery or anything like that.  Just try to dismiss some of his anger and ideas about the past -- and it doesn't hurt to support mages if you are a mage.

Sooo, has it been mentioned that Sebastian has seen Fenris praying in the chantry? Or as Fenris said "trying to blend in."

xD

Yeah, Fenris seems to be a stealth Andrastian. Which I don't mind, since he's not rubbing it in Hawke's face all the time *side-eyes Sebastian*

I remember that banter. :P It made me smile how passive aggressive Fenris was being. I can kind of imagine him trying to send telepathic messages to Sebastian to STFU. haha

*Files nails, leaning back in chair* He (Fenris) seemed sort of flustered, like he claimed he was trying to blend in off of the top of his head. At first, I thought it was more Fenris was trying it to see what it was like-- what this "Maker" and "Andraste" were all about because of that surprise (immaturity won over rationality the first time I heard it, :P ). But when I heard the dialogue a second time, it seemed like he was trying to hide that he actually had been praying.

Sneaky, lyrium-branded, elven warriors.

See, my mind went to the dirty place and the Andraste between Sebastian's legs.

Snipped, because my post was really long.

And I completely braced myself for him leaving my Hawke when I ultimately decided to side with the mages. (I lost Alistair at Landsmeet for simliar reasons.) And I was shocked and touched that he stayed devoted to my Hawke. That was great. I also love how the ending was simple -- the chosen love interest stayed with Hawke. No spectulation on what they went on to do. To "for a time" or disappearing acts. Nothing. The game felt whole and provided a sense of closure that I didn't really have with Origins.

I braced myself too, though I knew it was possible to at least bring him back to my side later on. When he finally said "This is a mistake...but I won't abandon you." my heart almost literally jumped into my throat (it was in my stomach before that because of what Anders did. When the Chantry blew up I was gaping, murmuring "Oh, my god. Oh, my god". He was my friend, and he used me. I was clutching my head with trembling hands. Seriously.)

It elated me, and made me more firm in my belief that I had to stand up for the mages. To have Aveline, who was unsure, say her place was by my side. To have Fenris, who hated mages, hated magic, hated everything that they could do, but who loved me, say he wouldn't abandon me, was one of the most emotional gaming moments I've ever had.

I want to say this now, because I don't think I could ever think it enough or tell enough people: I loved Dragon Age II more than Origins. That's not to say I didn't love Origins. I played it seven consecutive times, before I had my fill. But Dragon Age II resonated so much more with me. I loved the political story, more so than an epic evil that had to be destroyed. I loved that it took Fenris three years to say he couldn't stop thinking about me, and to sleep with Hawke, instead of possibly weeks (like in Origins). I loved that it was hard for him, and that the romance didn't complete until years later, and how I could remain faithful, or turn my attention to another if I wanted. As much as it made me want to cry, I loved the emotion of the death of Hawke's mother and how, even though he had left me there, Fenris tried to comfort me.

My only complaint is that it had an ending. I wanted it to go on forever. I can't wait for story enhancing DLC. Whether that entails content that happens in the between years, or post game, I hope I get to spend more time with Fenris  After all, "nothing is going to keep him from me", and he's the only one who didn't leave my side <3 *sigh*

Also, did Fenris ever visit your house to talk to the dog. I feel like I saw everyone else do that, except for him.

Varric does. He teaches your dog how to gamble, apparently. And Anders talks to your dog after you ask him to move in. He tells your dog that there isn't any room for him in the bed now that Anders is there. And of course Carver talked to my dog, before he got taken away (I assume Bethany does too). Sebastian told me that my mabari was a mark of honor and nobility. I don't know if Merrill ever speaks to the dog. And then, of course, there's Fenris. So the elves don't find it rewarding to talk to your dog? lol

One of the best scenes ever. And we learn that while everyone is a bit of a gambler, according to Varric, Anders is worst than Dog at playing!

Well, I know for a fact that Merrill speaks to the dog. She tells him a story about the dread wolf. I've also heard people say Fenris does talk to the dog, but so far I haven't experienced it myself.

...also, hi, I'm new to the thread. Do you guys have room for one more FenFan? :P

Which makes that one picture pseudocognition drew of them all playing poker all the more amusing, considering Anders was the only one, besides Isabela (and I think Varric had the majority of his clothes still), who still had his clothes.

Oh, yeah. Now I remember the dread wolf story. I only got it in my second playthrough, so I didn't think about it. My first playthrough will forever be my canon playthrough (which isn't always the case for me, because in Origins my canon playthrough was my Dalish elf, which was my second time through the game).

And I'm fairly certain there's room for one more ;)
