Yeah if I had to guess, it's processing the fact that he actually competed to get his markings. That is a BIG revelation, add to that what Varania told him, that it was all for nothing since his sister didn't appreciate it and ultimately didn't deserve it. He also just learns that his mother is dead. And people call him emo. That's like... a mess of trouble, there. And all he says is "I need some air." Dude!Reinara wrote...

I'm assuming that he either remembers again that Hawke is a mage too (unlikely if he does this in all the romance) or he's disgusted by the revelation that it was his past self that did everything to bring himself into all this mess he hates?

Considering he went back on his first "I'll have nothing to do with her!" and found her anyway, that's possible. But considering he was going to kill her, I don't think he would. He runs from his problems, emotionally. Usually. She betrayed him in his eyes, and represents both a lie and life he can't have again. Just like with Hawke, he'll having nothing to do with it.Tealsie wrote...
If Hawke had him keep his sister alive, does anyone have any ideas on what might come after that? I figure he probably would have nothing more to do with her, but at the same time... I could kind of see him waiting a few years(what, like... 7-12, the way the game is paced) and eventually trying to talk with her again.
With the events that are coming, he likely won't have time to change his mind either.

This is SO brutal. My Hawke chose to let Fenris make his own decision, and after finding out what Varania says, I'm almost GLAD he killed her. Poor Fenris, some things are better not to know

Egghhh. You're right, she deserves it, but I couldn't let him do it. I thought he would regret it later on. Reminds me of Garrus- except in his paragon/ renegade moment, he's just killing some guy who betrayed him, not his own flesh and blood.

Er....I'd say so. It's definitely in the red.
So whether or not I'm nice to him doesn't matter at this point? I'm not at full rivalry, yet, so I'm afraid to slip into being nice to him and throw my bar back into neutral.

One of my biggest concerns with Fenris' attachment to me. I almost feel I should romance him just so I know it's about love instead of leadership.Tealsie wrote...
I had to always let him make his own deciscion. I felt too much like I was "playing master/mistress" if I snapped my fingers and ordered him to kill or spare her... actually, I did that several times, but apparently he never actually takes what Hawke says as a kind of "you're trying to treat me as a slave!" thing. >_>

Same here. I kept tip-toeing through dialogue with him, first time around, thinking he would take some things completely the wrong way.maselphie wrote...

I'm curious if it's possible(say, in a rivalry role) to pretty much tell him "you're my slave now". Or that might just result in Hawke getting his/her heart phase-crushed.

xD I think there might have been a line in there like that? I swear I saw something like that as an option somewhere. Can't remember. But yes, the last thing you'll see is Fenris' pretty glow before he grabs you by the heart. Oof.Tealsie wrote...

Yeah but you're not ordering him not to kill her, you're imploring him as a friend. I see it as one of those times when you know a friend is not thinking clearly and acting out of rage, a rage he says he hates because they planted it in him. There's no way to talk him down from killing Danarius (as if I would!) but the fact that he actually lets himself be talked down makes me think he sort of wants to be. She's dead to him anyway, but I dunno, killing your own blood, I'm superstitious about stuff like that.Tealsie wrote...

Plus Varric, that burly fount of wisdom, added 2c from his own experience in my game. I wonder if he still does that if you let him kill Bartrand?

Well, if you're well in the red, some things won't give you approval that would if you are not, but you probably still want to be careful. But there's no real need to be nice to him either -- one of my favorite things about the rival romance was all the fights my Hawke had with him. He reacts differently to the gifts, though, if that's what you're worried about.
But even if you are mean to him, still take all the flirt options you can!

That's all true. Would've been nice if there was an option, once you're back at his mansion, to ask if he would rather have killed her and not known what she told him(if you happened to spare her). Or if he really just wanted her dead.Addai67 wrote...

...and about that whole scene, did anyone else's heart break with the line/voice/expression when he tells his sister that he would've given her everything?

They didn't say who they kidnapped but Hawke seems intent on saving them... maybe it's something Fenris says during that? Not sure if anyone has done it with all their siblings dead. Still going through the quest myself.

If you tell Fenris not to kill his sister, Varric interjects and tells him he knows though doesn't feel it right then that killing her is the last thing he (Fenris) wants to do. In my game, I had already talked Varric down from killing Bartrand. I wondered if Varric kills him, if he still says that to Fenris.Gilsa wrote...

I love how nervous Varric is around Fenris, BTW. When my Hawke objected to Fenris going back on his word to Hadriana, Varric leans in and whispers "now might not be the best time to offer the elf constructive criticism." lol

It would've been interesting if they had kidnapped Gamlen. I can imagine plenty of people who would've just let the blood mage kill him.Nerana wrote...

On my first playthrough, I had no family alive(and thought that they were all MEANT to die, until I crept onto here and found otherwise), but I had Fenris in my group, so they just kidnapped Varric. Apparently, so long as they are not in your group, it's meant to be your love interest who is kidnapped.

They kidnapped Aveline for me. I thought she was dead at first and really raaaged.
