If you tell Fenris not to kill his sister, Varric interjects and tells him he knows though doesn't feel it right then that killing her is the last thing he (Fenris) wants to do. In my game, I had already talked Varric down from killing Bartrand. I wondered if Varric kills him, if he still says that to Fenris.
I love how nervous Varric is around Fenris, BTW. When my Hawke objected to Fenris going back on his word to Hadriana, Varric leans in and whispers "now might not be the best time to offer the elf constructive criticism." lol
Let me add the dialogue I get from Varric after we finish off his brother. (The reason why I didn't even consider sparing Bartrand was because Carver died as a result and I knew Varric was going to be OK with killing his brother because he had several occasions of expressing how horrible he felt that Carver was dead because of Bartrand. Both in ambient dialogue and in one on one conversation. He swore revenge on Bartrand for this. All companions will say something in ambient dialogue if you lose a sibling, but I had appreciated Varric's sorrow.)
Hawke: Something on your mind, Varric?
Varric: I should thank you for your help with my brother.
Varric: He deserved to die after what happened to Carver, but ... I couldn't have gone through with that on my own.
Varric: He was never what you'd call nice. Or pleasant. Or hygienic. But he was my only brother.
Hawke: He was obviously suffering. You spared him a lot of misery.
Varric: I hope you're right.
Varric: I don't know if surface dwarves go back to the Stone or hang around singing hymns with Andraste, or what.
Varric: I just hope wherever he is now, Bartrand stays out of trouble.
I doubt his response to Fenris would change based on the outcome of his personal quest. He's not happy about it either way.
Edit: I didn't know that Anders could take control of Bartrand and unlock more dialogue so Anders is definitely coming next so I can gather more information about Bartrand's state of mind and how Varric feels about the whole thing.
