This.
I totally appreciate that he clings to that independence.

What is really offputting about his romance lines is how creepy he is from moment one.
So I've heard. There is not only the fact that you know he's an abomination, a violent one, starting out, he also warns you numerous times how dangerous he is, and to me there's nothing of the humor or laid-backness that was Anders to me. I mean, think of how you encounter him in Awakening and contrast. I also can't seem to get his flirt lines for love or money. When my snarky mage asks "what does that make me?" he says "well you are... something" like she's shoe scrapings. Way to woo a girl. lol I found much the same reception on my diplomatic Hawke.Pseudocognition wrote...

Huh? He's really sweet and flirty and Old Andersy in the beginning if you play as a male Hawke. I'm kind of surprised at the difference.

As for Anders. I would have loved THE Anders. This is totally not Anders...He is not matured he is a totally different person! In Awakening i cringed at the thought of him not being a romance option and i even flirted with him even tho my Warden was queen (and i was a bit of a Alistair fangirl). Now when i tried to go thru a different romance, Anders made me throw up with those sugary lines. Maybe i like my man to be darker, i dunno xD But after a while in his romance i heard him talk to Fenris (i romanced Fenris too but after he left i went with Anders) and i had to reload and wait for Fenris.
Hey! Fenris is a bit of a dick AND judgemental. If not moreso.Addai67 wrote...

He left for me too, so I ran over to his mansion (Quest: Questioning beliefs), then he went to Hawke's estate and spent the night with her.darkrose wrote...
Okay, I'm yet another person having trouble romancing Fenris. I'm playing a male mage Hawke in Act 2. I was slightly friendly and had flirted with him in A Bitter Pill. I let him kill Hadriana (no hardship there, since she killed me) and gave the girl a job (she was so not going to make it on her own)...and then he got mad when I asked him if he wanted to talk about it--kind of don't blame him; it wasn't the time for sharing our feelings--started ranting about how all mages are evil, and Hawke had a sad face.
So I went back to the estate; Fenris apologized...and left.
Am I completely SOL now, or will I have another opportunity to get in his spiky metal pants?
*relieved sigh* Thank you!
Sadly, the wall-push didn't go in the direction I wanted--my Hawke is such a bottom; he'd much rather be the one being shoved--but that's okay.
Think I'll replay that one more time before going to bed. I'm going to regret this when I have to get up five hours from now...but it's worth it.
Like all characters Anders and be really sweet and a major jerk at times. I prefer romancing Fenris not only because I love his character, but because of the challenge. Here my Hawke is outrageously flirting with Fenris and Fenris is always "Maybe another time". Damn what does a champion got to do to get in those pants! I find it much more rewarding when Fenris takes forever to give in, while Anders propositioned me directly after Karl died. Damn he wasn't even cold in his grave.Pseudocognition wrote...

Not that Fenris doesn't start out rough, too, with his "oh, another mage" spiel. But there's some redeeming gentlemanliness even in his first dialogues.

The fact that even if you sided with the mages, Fenris would still be at your side if you maxed Friendship. Whereas Anders will never help you attack the mages, Fenris is willing to attack the templars. It shows that he can put down his hatred for magic to do what is at hand. He doesn't think siding with the mages is right but he cares more about Hawke than old hatreds.
Exactly.
Which brings me to another point I was wondering...many of you keep writing about how you chose to side with the mages.
I'm puzzled, I've always been pro mage(playing one 90% of the time as well) but the mages in DA2 kind of...made me rethink my opinions of mages in the world of Dragon Age. I did both of the endings and much prefer the templar one, despite Meredith going crazy because of the idol. At least that can be blamed on the idol and not her being an idiot and turning to blood magic.
So why are basically all of you siding with the mages? I'm curious, especially if you've been agreeing with Fenris' ideas.

i feel the same about anders, he needs to be a bit tougher. As I've said previously he reminds me of a hippy esque peron (nothing wrong with that) but thats not the sort of person I go for.
Not saying Fenris is a bad guy, but I always tend to go for evil or anti-hero characters. Need a bit of darkness, Anders just goes on too much about hurting Hawke.

I-what? Surprise kisses? How'd you get that? D:

That's the kiss you get if you continue the romance with him after the quest with his sister. There are no surprise kisses from what I know of. D:
And I love the angry look Anders get during that quest. Again, awesome expressions by Fenris.

Fenris is opinionated, but he shows some gentlemanly concern and restraint at points too. For instance, even with his feelings about mages, he'll say "that was unworthy of me" about a dickish comment he made, and he shows concern for a mage Hawke going into the Gallows. Anders is just a bundle of emotions, I get that, and I think he's supposed to have woobie charm which he did for about ten minutes. Then it was a bit too much. I also saw the first bit of his mansion visit scene and the line "Justice doesn't approve of me seeing you" creeps me the hell out. Maybe I'll get over it.maselphie wrote...

I'm the opposite -- I didn't like Anders and then fell for him. Anders is creepy, because of Justice, but he's actually a pretty normal romance throughout the game. The most drama is after the game is over, not during, like Fen here.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was, he's not "matured". He's Anders + Justice, and Justice is an old fuddy duddy. Which makes for nice tortured and/or hilarious lines especially considering the old Anders.
