I had a pretty easy time friendship mancing him actually, because although Fenris was clearly biased, he also was willing to listen to reason.

Anders on the other hand, I started off the game finding him very sympathetic, but he just gets more and more fanatical and refuses to see reason or any of the valid points of the other side of the argument.

Exactly. I'm at like 80% friendship with Fenris as a mage, and it wasn't that hard. I took him on several quests where I picked up some rivalry, but it was offset by my Hawke's hatred of slavers.

What got me was when I went to the Gallows with Fenris for the first time. What's the first thing he says?

"Are you certain it's a good idea for you to be here?"

He just met me; I'm a mage, and he sounds genuinely concerned about me. Anders, on the other hand, sometimes acts like he expects me to like him because we're both apostates.

Also, does anyone else find Anders' line in Awakening about how "the Imperium has a better way" of dealing with mages to be rather chilling in retrospect?

I want Fenris' red tie wrapped around my Hawke's wrist too! Gasp, maybe Hawke wears the same thing and that's what's wrapped around Fenris' wrist :o It makes sense for a male Hawke at least, but it's probably not. Oh well a girl can dream.

Male Hawke wears the same tight pants that Anders is wearing in that shot.
(Which, incidentally, is why I didn't mind the lack of nudity in regards to Anders' scene, it would be weird to see them with the same body since I played dude Hawke as well).

Theeey...both shop at Andraste's Secret?

I wanted to see Fenris lyrium brands! Uhhh! Hm...Someone made custom tattoos for the face already...we have Fenris naked...i am becoming weirder by the second ><

i like to call Sarcastic!Hawke, "Awkward!Hawke".   Because no one ever really laughs.  They're pity laughs.  And its too classic when a companion calls you out for a wildly innappropriate comment and you can just be all "What? what did i say?"

Makes sense. I'm tearing what little hair I have out, though, because often sarcastic goes to awkward goes to being an inappropriate ass.

Oh. Oh, h-hi Fenris.

I just floundered over the reactionary blue-glow, wall-slam of what-are-you-doing-don't-touch-me followed by Hawke being all "was that a challenge?" growly make-out scene.

Pardon me, I'll be in the Deep Roads. Collecting my jaw.

Incorrect. All of the training Fenris receives is from Hawke. You know all those late night workouts

Why does Fenris, after the sexytime, wear the Amell family crest on his hip I wonder...

Edit: Or does he wear that for everyone after his act 2 personal quest?  I know the red scarf is romance related, but I was curious about the family crest.

its a Knight thing. the favor (scarf) says he's representing someone when he fights or acts. the crest is the symbol of whom he chooses to represent.

Ah, ok, I knew the scarf was Hawke's favor (saw DG's post), but was unsure about the crest.  But that makes infinite sense!  Thanks!

Yeah, I really don't understand all the "Fenris is emo" comments. Anders is way more emo then Fenris haha.

I think "stoic" is the perfect word to describe Fenris. Yes, he can be snarly and spiteful, but just as often he's polite and courteous, and he has no qualms about joking around with the other companions. He's got a full range of emotions, it's just that he's fairly quiet by default.

By Act 3, i find that fenris is VERY sociable. he's got a comment about everything. he clearly becomes more outgoing as the time goes on.  at least in banters and comments.

I think the "emo" thing comes about because he voices an unpopular opinion about mages. most people seem to side with anders' veiws by default and fail to see that Fenris isnt just whining. his opinion is valid and repeatedly justified.  also the emo thing may just come from the dour clothing, deadpan tone, and hair style.  Looks aren't everything.

I think Fenris comes across as emo because some of his lines are, out of context, hilariously over the top. "Dark magic is a plague on my soul"--he's right, but it still makes me want to pat him on the head and say, "Cheer up, emo kid!"

Of course, then he'd probably rip my heart out of my chest.

This describes my Hawke when he flirted with Fenris when he got some of his memory back after doing it. My Hawke said if this brings your memory back maybe we should do it more often. Fenris was not amused, but what can I say. My Hawke was a more badass Johnny Bravo B)

I honestly think that 90% of the "Fenris is emo" comments come from people who never actually interacted with him and just saw his hairstyle.   :/

may also be because they only chanced him in Act 1.  In act 1, he was clearly not accustomed to socializing. he'd been on the run for ages. making friends isn't something he ever did.  as time goes on, he gets better at it.

and he really isn't so bad about the mage issue. certainly nowhere near as bad as anders. all the arguments he makes are valid, but he doesnt shove them down people's throats unprovoked.  and he actually is capable of you know, stopping.  he's just a friendly reminder of what happens when people are allowed free reign, especially with that sort of power.

I'm not going to give him a total pass on that, though. Yes, he has valid reasons to feel the way he does, but the "All members of minority X are violent/sneaky/stupid/greedy--but you're different," really sucks to be on the receiving end of.

Here's a question bordering on plothole for all ya'll.

How is it that Fenris knows the Qun? I imagine he's memorized it... but he can't read?
What. Did Danarius read the Qun to him every night before bedtime or something?

Yes! Agreeing furiously with everything you said.  I love the way his character progresses and he softens up as the game continues. His conversations with Varric and Aveline are just pure gold.

I almost always found myself siding with Fenris, because he is not just a fanatical "I hate mages!" jerk. He is anti-mage, but he's got good reasons and his opinion is based on what he's seen, both in Tevinter AND Kirkwall.

I honestly think that 90% of the "Fenris is emo" comments come from people who never actually interacted with him and just saw his hairstyle.   :/

He does give very good reasons.  Sometimes it's hard to disagree with his logic.

I took him to see Idunna, "the exotic wonder of the east", last night, because I was curious how he would react to her enchantment.  I had to leave everyone else out of the party because someone else always chimed in, getting taken in by her.  He does, too, at first, but then realizes it and tells Hawke to "be cautious."  It made me think about what it would be like to live around a blood mage like Danarius who could control your mind.  He had to become knowledgeable and disciplined on the subject of magic just to find his own identity.  I made a video of the interaction here.  Also interesting- he makes no objection and gives no rivalry points for letting her go.

He also doesn't give you any friendship points for killing her. Not that my Hawke wouldn't have done it anyway, but still...

Seriously. I can just imagine it.

Fenris: "Danny nanny, can you read me that passage where all mages get their tongues cut out and submit their wills to the Qun?"
Danarius: "Certainly, little Fenris! I will breed good healthy anti-Mage rhetoric and ideology in you yet!"
Fenris: "Yaaay!"

Fenris and Danarius were on some island the Quanri and Imperium had been fighting over for years. Danarius left him there when he had to escape a Quanri attack (ass) and I believe that's were he might have learned it.

Not by choice.

Danarius was forced to leave him behind because the people on the ship wasn't letting a slave take a valuable spot.

Yeah, his education puzzles me a lot.

He has to say something about everything more or less :°D
About magic, Tevinter history, Dalish history, wars, cultures...and he knows religions and the Qun.

I like him even more for it! But really...how? His memory must be extraordinary :D

Someone mentioned that part of why Fenris gets crap is because it's anti-mage -- I think this is verrrrry likely. Seems that even after DA2, most DA fans side with mages on the whole freedom vs. security debate, probably because of real life factors. Despite the fact that Fenris is repeatedly, constantly proven to be correct, and despite the fact that he makes an exception for mages who are strong enough -- Bethany and Hawke, depending on class -- he gets lumped in with communist mage haters.

I think it's half that IRL, liberty is everything, and half the fact that while we're giving the option to be a mage in game, we're not given the option to be a templar, and that biases the playerbase towards "their" faction.

In any case, Fenris isn't wrong about mages, and I wish people would see it, sigh.

It really doesn't make sense why Danarius would bother to educate Fenris. well known fact. Education = REBELLION.

On top of all of that knowledge, Fenris can't read. So he's evidently had to sit down and have some long coffee conversations with professors. While running away. And surviving. And hunting down people. And living in Kirkwall. I don't get it.

Maybe he just really really sucked at being a mage master?

Hadriana: "Honey bunny poo poo, what are you doing with the Slave?"
Danarius: "Oh! I'm just teaching him the best escape routes from Tevinter to Kirkwall! And also reading Dalish History, rebellion, laws, religion, and we're going over the anti-mage Qun stuff for fun!"
Hadriana: "Awww, he'll be the best loyal slave ever!"
Fenris: "Yaaay!"

Seb and Anders get more intense later in the game than early on. It's actually fun to watch.
I really like that Fenris actually gets along with everyone in the party except the mages, for obvious reasons.

While I like Anders personality, I do kind of dislike how he treats the other companions - there are plenty of uncalled for comments and reactions, especially towards the end when he gets full blown paranoid. I think this aspect slightly tips the scale in liking Fenris more, personality wise.

Yeah, whoever came in here complaining about Fenris being mean to Merill a few days ago, needs to see Anders. He is awful. Even while playing a character that loved him dearly I the player wanted to b!tchslap him. Fenris makes a comment here and there, usually just blunt honestly, but nothing near as bad as Anders/Justice.

Oh? So pray tell why do the mages turn to bloodmagic. Because they have no option or because they're all power hungry? Because I see desperate people turnig to bloodmagic when they've been constantly oppressed due to Fenris' "solution" of keeping them isolated.

Answer that and we'll see how "right" Fenris is.

For the record I think both he and Anders are blind stubborn morons when it comes to mages. They shouldn't be free as birds but they shouldn't be prisoners either because a few rotten apples. Both let their past experiences blind them and both are judgemental.

That's what I love about them. They're so similar yet are on opposite sides of the fence.

He's not wrong in certain circumstances, but he's HIGHLY HIGHLY prejudiced.

If it were up to him and you didn't have a ton of bodyguards surrounding you, I don't think Fenris would think twice about disposing you after shaking your hand.

He's really just as bad as Anders when it comes to seeing the situation in extremes. Male LIs are kinda screwy.
