Being a mage nets you a couple, first conversation, saying that your building a new life instead of thinking of old home would result in rivalry, as does asking why he won't sleeping dogs lie instead of commenting that going after his master is a good plan. It's also a very, very nice dialog. Any mage/templar quest, if you defend the mages will net rivalry. Feynriel to the Dalish - rivalry. Being friendly with Merril (saying her magic did undo the barrier and agreeing to visit her once you bring her to Kirkwall) = rivalry. Telling Anders that you'd help a fellow mage maps or no = rivalry.
Drag him to the fade with you in the later act and I think I recall getting rivalry points as well. If you take a deal with the first demon even if you intend to trick him in the end = rivalry. Bonus rivalry if Fenris gets swayed by pride demon, his apology and consequative talk will give you even more rivalry.(make sure merril isn't with you, her fade scene overrides Fenris')
Don't be afraid to grab a few friendhip points here and there though. It won't kill the rivalry track unless you compound it with pro templar decisions too. So no need to play nice with slavers if you despise the lot, or being a jerk and disagreeing to do personal quests just for some points. I recall almost maxing my rivalry meter in act 1 already
Oh, and some sarcastic exchanges are really good, rival or no.
Flatterer heart option after he comments that he should be thanking Andso:
"You sound like you are about to ask for a loan."
"Well, this mansion does require some upkeep..."
