In the apology dialogue, he does mention the pain. Of course, it's probably hard to separate whether it's actual or remembered physical pain. Pain is tricky like that- a lot of it is in the mind. His raw emotional state might have made him feel it more acutely than he otherwise would. For reasons you point out, I doubt it's agony or he wouldn't continue.Gr8pillock wrote...
See, I never got the impression that they still hurt. Maybe when he goes all glowy, but every time he mentions the agony, it is in past tense, save for the fact that the MEMORY of the pain is still agonizing. I think he's quite comfortable at present really, at least physically.
Cause let's be clear, if shagging my Hawke was better than anything he could have dreamed, he probably wasn't in too too much pain. Pain has an almost immediate impact on the 'little soldier' if you know what I'm sayin. LOL! I can't believe I just said that.

Anyway, I'm not here to debate. Just to point out that differing points of view on his dialogs can be equally supported. I think they're ambiguous for a reason -- so we can all form our own head-canon.

There's no criteria to trigger it other than picking the purple sarcastic response [It certainly was stupid] when she says, "This was all incredibly stupid. And you made it wonderful." She's so overjoyed with Donnic returning her feelings that she gives Hawke a spontaneous kiss.

@Jess - Howdy! Yeah, I've tried Anders, don't plan on going that route again and now Fenris. I think I'm going to try a Sebastian romance once just to see what it's like, but I have a feeling next up for me will be a mage/Fenris rivalmance.
My biggest problem is that I don't have Warden Alistair save and I want to see how that plays out in DA2 (know all about it, but want to see it for myself) so who knows what I'll wind up doing next. So many choices... lol.
I haven't finished any saves but my Amell. I need to get them through awakening and WH still. And I finally got a reference to her when Anders said "A MAGE ended the blight!" in one of his rants. I'll romance him again, I love them both.

Agreed. Phantom pain tends to accompany traumatic injuries. Heck I just had a whole mouthful of oral surgery sone, it's been almost three weeks and I still feel like I have a toothache in a spot that I used to get them really bad all the time. Nerve endings have memories too, and that kind of pain can be just as bad as the actual event.
To address other comments why would he still go for it with Isabella, First, he's a warrior:) He knows how to control pain to get through:P Kidding. Seriously, as mentioned before though I think it's the intimacy that jump starts the pain memories. There's no intimacy with Isabela,. None. Zip. zilch. There's a huge difference between gettin' some, and intimacy.

My Amell blood mage just recruited Loghain and sent Alistair off as a drunk but is sitting in Denerim with a lot of game left, and then Awakening... who knows when/if I'll get to it.

I realized awhile ago that I see some of these conversations VERY differently than other people do, and even in replaying them, I don't take them any other way (which is why I don't post much here *grin*). I think his conversations are deliberately ambiguous, however. it depends what chord strikes stronger for the individual.

Maybe it's just me, but the third person stepping in always makes the banter, for me. If I remember correctly, when you have Anders in instead of Fenris during that Isabela/Aveline banter, he says something like "Just...no." in a kind of disturbed/pleading voice.
Which reminds me... has anyone else had Varric and Fenris in their group when they go to see Emile's parents? His mother says something about the Hanged Man being filthy, and when Hawke walks back to the companions, Varric mimicks her, and Fenris just says "It is filthy." And Isabela says "They are so Orlesian."

@ejoslin - I took his pain reference to mean mental anguish, not physical discomfort, so don't feel alone.
@Nerana - I love the party banter and am glad to see they've included more three-way convos and better still, a few that Hawke actually takes part in. That's just so very cool!

With the pain, if he does feel the physical kind then I think it's a memory thing because it's trauma. To me, he got glowy it's because of extreme emotions, and during he make out scene he felt strongly about Hawke and therefore the kiss happened. Also I think being ambiguous is good, leave things to the imagination and self Interpretation
I also noticed that with this one I have a hard time siding with the Templars, even if it's for achievement purposes. With origins it's not so bad because I think the consequences were not as extreme compare to DA2.

actually David posted ages back that Fenris does indeed feel pain. doubly so when the tattoos are touched. but keeping in mind its a CONSTANT pain, i'm sure he's desensitized to it to a degree.
it's pretty much going to hurt regardless, so i don't think he's that concerned about it. of course when he's touched by surprise and isn't mentally ready for it, it would be akin to someone poking you with something REALLY really hot. thus he jumps and goes to attack whatever touched him. but obviously if its hawke he wouldn't.
now if its touch he's actually READY for, its not the same. but yes, i'm sure there's an intricate post-traumatic stress disorder style side to the pain. emotional pain. but yeah.

Many of Fenris' dialogs are a bit more ambiguous than people give them credit for. Like when he says he has no memories of having sex before his markings and has not had sex since he escaped, people see him as saying he has no memories of having sex (he doesn't mention anything of when he was a slave, just before and after escaping, but again, I can see someone taking it the other way). When he talks about the pain, is it really physical pain he's talking about? It would seem if sex were actually painful for him, he wouldn't have a casual fling with Isabela.
Anyway, I'm not here to debate. Just to point out that differing points of view on his dialogs can be equally supported. I think they're ambiguous for a reason -- so we can all form our own head-canon.
No, I agree with you. I was discussing with someone I'm beta'ing for these points the other day. I do not see the 'pain' being physical when Fenris references it. I see it being more emotional because like you said, what about Isabela?
I could easily see such a fount of memories rushing in, a taste of something from the past and the happiness it might have reminded him of suddenly being there and then gone as painful to undergo.
As to the sex thing, I agree as well. I think some people are just wanting to paint it that he's sort of a 'reborn' virgin thanks to the loss of memory because that makes it all the sweeter a tale. I suppose I just don't see it that way.

Agreed again, I think a lot of stuff was left very deliberately ambiguous so people can read into it what they will - it's never clear whether was causes the pain/memories, and what he has avoided, is emotional intimacy, a long-term relationship, or physical contact altogether. Likewise the scene with Danarius - 'the lad is quite skilled' could as be a hint of sexual abuse as it could simply be of his fighting skills. It's open to interpretation for all of us as we prefer, I think.

I went back and replayed this scene to Fraps it because it is just so awesome. I had Fenris, Varric and Aveline, and I started laughing the second that crazy imitation came out of Varric's mouth. Aveline just sighs at the end and says, "Orlesians" in this disgusted voice. That's my buddies.
I really wish DA2 could have ended with Varric and Aveline sticking around Hawke as well, but I guess Varric is off doing more mysterious things and Aveline is still in Kirkwall making guardbabies with Donnic. I hope they made her Viscount after I left...although she's a bit Sam Vimes so I am not sure how how well that would go down with her!

Glitchy itch! So, after Fenris leaves, I decided to have the whole Anders scene. Flirted, he made out with my face, shows up at my house that night and calls the love of my life a Beast and I snap at him and send him away. Yet, before he came to the house, Varric's Friendly Concern popped up. First time I checked it before the break up and he mentioned Anders. Second time, I ended it with Anders before going and he brings up Fenris being the angsty elf. Yet, when he goes to warn me about what that relationship might entail it glitched to him saying, "Isabella is a great girl and all." (I've never even flirted with the NOTION of flirting with her. No offense to her of course, she's my besties) I was pissed! I wanted to hear his complaints about Fenris!
Has anyone else actually heard the correct conversation?
I didn't have that quest pop up on my first playthrough. Is there some sort of criteria that needs to be met? O_o

I tested this on my first and second games. Neither flirted with Aveline and still got the kiss by picking the sarcastic response. One was peacemaker and the other was aggressive. However they were both in the friend zone with Aveline. I have no idea if this would change for rivals.Gilsa wrote...

Man, the first playthrough was painful to narrow down. I had 20 saves because I was flying through the game and didn't know where the major moments were. Second game, had maybe 200 saves because I knew when all the good cutscenes were about to happen. =p

Okay, I'm officially hooked on Fenris as a LI. I just finished his quest in Act 3 and now when I click on him while exploring, one of his responses is "I'm yours."
That line from Zevran used to make me melt (and that's saying a lot as I'm a huge Alistair fan) and hearing Fenris say it gives me the same reaction. Zev's delivery is still my favorite, but I'll romance Fenris again (and again) just to hear him tell my Hawke that! LOL
