So does any of his dialogue change if you friendmance him as a mage? I think that romance has the potential to be one of the cutest things ever.
The only part of friendmance that I saw that it was really brought up that Hawke was a mage was during the dialogue that Fenris (if you flirt with him beforehand, and I don't remember which one other then this part, except that I believe that it's in Act II) calls Hawke beautiful/handsome and inquires if Hawke has a problem with him being a former slave and squatting in the mansion. The sarcastic option to reply to that (if you're playing a mage) is that you are an apostate and something else (I can't remember the exact reply). Other then that, I really didn't notice him pointing out much about being a mage (but then I never picked the options that were, "Hey, what about me?! I'm a mage!").
Hmm... Perhaps it's time for me to go make Nerezza... or remake Kaaliss as a mage instead of a rogue...

How do you guys manage to rivalmance Fenris?
I'm trying, and pretty much am an **** mage sympathiser, but the gorgeous elf makes me do things of questionable nature to get rivalry! Like, I wanted to give Fenris the chance to torture the slaver... oh noes, friendship points! I wanted to slice and dice the guy selling mages to slavers (I'm a gung-ho mage sympathiser!!!), oh noes, Fenris APPROVES! He's killing me, really, he is. I had to make a deal with the bastard through Varric just to not get friend points.
My aim is get close to 100% rivalry at the end of act 1 or at the beginning of act 2.
I had the conversation with him, the choices to get rivalry from him are so... UGH. So I took the 20 friendship hit if it meant having a decent conversation.
I'm not looking forward to him yelling at me when I give him a gift. This rivalry stuff is TOUGH.
Hmmm... I actually left Fenris at home for that part of that quest and brought Aveline to temporarily fill the tank role when I did my rivalmance with him. If you have to, play on the friend path again so you learn where all of the friend points are-- I had played on friendly path + romance basically twice before (original save got deleted as I got close to the end-game, so I had to replay it again) I did the rival one, so I had a good idea.
With that quest in particular (this is the one with Feynriel, right?), just temporarily boot him when you talk to the slaver, get the info and kill the slaver, and then grab him again and you shouldn't have to worry about the friend points. When you get to the end of the cave, send Feynriel to the Dalish, which I know gets you at least a few rival points there.
