The romance is fine without snugglecuddle of any type. I try to block out the "cuddle" they added to Garrus' romance in LOTSB. So awkward. No no no. The wall slam is just fine as it is.
I think so too. All three kisses are so different, and say so much about the romance. I like them a lot. I'm very impressed by the animator. I think more would have detracted (gah, if I never see underweartastic sex again, I'll be happy).

Why is he so messed up? I mean...really messed up. Because let's be honest, he has some anger management issues. Being a slave, ok, that can make you angry. But he hates everyone and everthing, ever. Any itty bitty hint of a reference to slavery of Tevinter, and *RAGE*. Hawke comes into his life, and that starts to change. WHY? I'm not buying the "because it's true wuuuuuuvvvvvvvv!"
He's obviously ill-equipped to start a new life. Is starting a new life the best thing for him right now, psychologically? Is that why he needs Hawke?
Am I making any sense at all, whatsoever?

I think that he, himself, is a pretty calm and polite person, since when he goes RAGE on, say, Hadriana, he aplogises to Hawke. And then explains that the hate was planted in him by Danarius and Hadriana. I think it starts to change with Hawke not because of "twu wuv" but because he has no reason to RAGE at them(unless you play rivalry with him). He aplogises whenever he does snap at Hawke.Mel_Redux wrote...

I can see his arm around Hawke's shoulder with her leaning in while on the settee reading , and I consider spoooning the same as holding someone/being held while they sleep because well that's how I sleep. Mostly with Fen I can see a touch to the cheek as he does often in the game, a hand squeeze, and for some reason I can see him putting a guiding hand at the small of her back as the go through adoor.
Affection doesn't have to = cuddling right?

Because Hawke is stable?
Nah, I really can't say that with my characters. My original mage!Hawkette could be considered a doormat because of how diplomatic and naive she comes off, my Rogue!Hawkette is snarktastic and never serious (unless someone she cares about dies), my (male!)rogue!Hawke is slightly bi-polar (and with Merrill-- Fenris and him are bros), and then Nerezza Hawke is just... scary. The chip on her shoulder makes Velanna look VERY polite.

In the rivalmance he says that he sees that Hawke is doing something right so he wants her opinion on how he should move forward. I don't think it's a mystery why he's messed up. Even without the lyrium torture and the "special treatment" he got from Danarius and Hadriana- he says she deliberately withheld food, disturbed his sleep etc.- if he was born a slave he would have little idea how to live an independent life or think of a future or of making goals. I guess it's why he stays in the old mansion. He can't completely break from Danarius even if he wants to.Mel_Redux wrote...

You have to think of it as from his perspective. It's not so much the whole slave thing messed him up, but that he's pretty much as no one. Because of the memory wipe, he doesn't not remember anything that's worth remembering; obey his master was all he knew. He had no hope, no desire, no education. That makes him ill equipped to start a new life, like you said. The fog warriors introduced the idea of 'freedom', but Hawke gave him a reason/showed him what it means 'to live'. This is why Danarius is a very smart evil man; if you stripped away someone's memory and replace it with everything you say, he's much easier to control. Fenris is bitter because he has absolutely nothing. Love is essentially something unfamiliar because there's no trust when it comes to others.
His frustration with the idea that he'll never truly be free and anger towards what was taken from him made him closed off to others because, well, it's the only way he can protect himself. He would rather keep running than to have someone betray him, it'll be too much to bare for him

I think I'm having trouble understanding the bolded part. Yes, they used him as a slave and treated him badly. But was he saying it was purposeful? Maybe they thought having a loose cannon as a bodyguard would be more effective? And how did they have such a hold over him? What was keeping him from turning on them?

He has a short temper, and only regarding things that have to do with mages and slavery. That's... entirely understandable.

As a slave he did not know anything but slavery and he basically says that he took the abuse without complaint. Once he gained perspective he understood the cruelty of what was done to him and was then angry about it.

He apologizes in a rivalry relatonship too. And really has no reason to rage at Hawke, rivalry or not. Rivalry is NOT this mean, horrible relationship. I think in a rivalry he's challenged a lot more. But just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean you RAGE at them.
And actually, by act 3, he's made friends with about everyone. He hates Anders and Merrill, but that's to be expected. He has weekly card games at his house, he goes to the hanged man and such. He doesn't seem to be rageman so much as whe you first meet him he has been on the run and has no reason to get to know anyone. I think settling down in one place for a long period, he manages to establish himself somewhat.

He explains to someone(can't remember who or when) something about not really trying to escape before, because he had no memories of life before he was a slave. So, as far as why he didn't try turning on them before, it could be because he didn't think too much on freedom. But then he had a taste of it when he was with the fog warriors, and it was only after that that he escaped.Mel_Redux wrote...

I could imagine Danarius wanting a loose canon, although one he could control. Might be the reason why Danarius wiped his memories again if Hawke hands the poor boy back over to the creep.
Edit: ^^^: That's not what I was saying. I'm not really sure just how he acts in a rivalry romance, since I haven't got around to trying yet. Just that it seemed like he's more sweet and gentle and polite in a friendship romance.

He is sweeter in a friendship romance, but in a rivalry he acknowledges and accepts the differences. It has a more raw feel to it, and a bit more passionate, but the loving dialog comes through just fine.
Edit: I should add that Fenris in a friendmance is sweeter to Hawke -- he's exactly the same to everyone else.

I think his wolf persona does not commit to cuddling. He isn't the very cuddly type. Remember, Fenris spent quite a while with the Fog Warriors in Seheron. He pretty much learned affection from them. So, would a Qunari cuddle and make googly eyes? Fenris seems more like the type to make direct contact when he wants to. Either if he is jealous, trying to protect Hawke, or simply wanting physical love, he seems to me that he does not waste his romantic feelings freely. He gives them when Hawke truly needs it.

According to Merrill, he makes googly eyes at Hawke. But he denies it vehemently! Leandra also says something about the way they look at each other.
But I don't see him as a cuddler. At all.

Is it any different if you're rival not because of your different beliefs, but because you're a jerk to him?
Edit: I think he's like Sten in terms of affection too(to a certain extent, at least). He might not be really openly affectionate, but certain things(in Fen's case, Hawke; in Sten's, cookies, cake,, and kittens) can turn him "softer", I guess. Not necessarily CUDDLY, but just... more loving, less... Sten-ish.
