Well, when I got it, it was right after the act three scene where he asks for your forgiveness and you reconcile the relationship. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it, but it was directly after that when I clicked on him and he said that.
Fangasm indeed. It was pure awesome the way he said it. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Meaning that he won't stay with her, while all other companions drift apart. Is this true? I've not tried the rivalmance, both my Hawkes seem to max the friend meter fairly quickly, even with being pro-mage.
If he doesn't walk off into the sunset with her, my Hawke will not be interested in a rivalmance/mage supporting storyline.
So yeah, call me a sap, but I like to have at least a semi-happy ending for my girls. I love the all dark/angsty/etc stuff, and working through it. But..., well, I want her to be at least a little bit happy after all she's gone through.

You can keep Fen with you if you max his Rival/Friend guage out.

LOL I wish that after a certain number of consecutive clicks, a random WTF response popped up. No matter how much you love someone, if they poke you every second for an hour, it's going to get old.
I seem to recall hearing that joked about ealier in the thread. Something like 'WTF, I LOVE YOU! Okay?! There, I said it!!!'

It depends on where you meter is at, he will either side with you (maxed out) or he will leave and come back later, or leave and fight you.

My maxed friendmance mage Hawke will side with the mages against her brother (stupid Carver) so I'm sure Fenris will wander off into the sunset with her as well after the Big Fight.
But what I meant is will he stay on with her afterward if it's a maxed rivalmance?
Is Varric still going to say: "We all drifted apart, well, except for Fenris..." when in a rivalmance and siding with the mages at endgame. Someone posted somewhere (I don't remember where I read that in the slightest) that Fenris doesn't stay with her when she leaves Kirkwall after the end-fight.

Yes, Varric will still say Fenris stayed with Hawke during a rivalmance too. Happened with me. So there's nothing to worry about.

YAY!! Thanks, StaceysChain. I now have the perfect reason to play through a 3rd time. Funny thing though. I would so like to romance Anders, just to see how it works from beginning to bitter end, but I always get sidetracked. I can't keep my Hawke away from the elf, hangdarnit. Same happend with Zevran/Alistair. I'm beginning to wonder about my girls. Truly.

Nope, you've heard wrong. He thinks she's making a mistake, but sticks with her! And they have their happily ever'ish after.
Edit: Really, the only difference between a rival and friendmance is a few lines of dialog -- he'll acknowledge they have differences of opinion, he reacts differently to the gifts, and some other minor changes. He also at some points gets angrier than in a friendmance. But he loves his rival just as much as he loves his friend, and acts accordingly.

He is. He's given me Alistair (though Alistair hurt my city elf too badly for me to be able to seriously romance him), Zevran, and now Fenris. He just knows exactly what chords to hit and what strings to pull with those dialogs.
And it doesn't hurt that those three voice actors just nailed their romantic lines so perfectly.

He has some things in common with Atton. Atton resents the Jedi and their power, Fenris resents mages and their power. Atton picks fights with the Exile while secretly loving her, Fenris can pick fights with Hawke while secretly loving him/her, provided you rival him. And they both like playing card games and have blond, English blokes competing for the object of their affections!
