I think it's a cool thing he lives in a mansion in hightown.
He's an elf , noble people must be really shock some elf owns the place.
He might enjoy that thought , like hey i'm not one to hide in your stupid alienage.

I think it's in a codex somewhere, where the nobles in Hightown do kind of gossip about it, that a "Friend of the Champion" is living there.

Fenris strikes me at the person who would need his alone time, no matter what. you now, for brooding and stuff. I can understand him not moving in and squatting in the cobwebby, corpse filled mansion.

If you romance him, Varric says at the end that everyone leaves Hawke's side, except Fenris. I don't see him needing separate tents or anything at that point. but the separate mansion makes sense to me.

EDIT:  plus, that's where his wine stash is Posted Image

..and that's why my Hawke is crashing at his place instead.

Yeah but according to him in the Alone quest he has no friends or something. I don't know. I found him to be confusing and frustrating and not in ways that made me curious to understand him. I played twice and romanced him once and I still don't... get it.

But I do like him when he's angry.

Heh for sure.  He says he's alone even if still in a romance with Hawke, but he assumes she hates him.  Being around people doesn't seem to bother him, rather closeness with someone.  He obviously was really looking forward to having a sister so he's reacting to that disappointment.

Other people say he's confusing, too, but I dunno, I don't find him confusing.  Frustrating, yes- I like difficult people.  Posted Image  Maybe it doesn't bother me because I don't even try to be nice to him when he's being a ******.  I started a new rogue and am going to try to get the friendship romance, but I'm going to miss being cussed at for helping to save his skin.  lol

I enjoyed the Fenris romance because it wasn't all fluffy. It's the same reason I preferred Zevran's romance in DAO (though I'm such a sucker for Alistair too). I like the idea that for a couple years there was just some great sexual tension, followed by the inevitable coming to care about one another, and that one night. I like that Fenris kind of freaked out and distanced himself. It was infuritating and immature and difficult for Hawke, but she also kind of understood. He's kind of a broken dude.

It made the ineviatable reunion that much sweeter. Like, okay we've clearly tried to get past each other. It hasn't worked. Let's be together now. I'm a fan of overcoming things in relationships. I think it makes them stronger.

...Plus the Fenris voice saying "I am yours" when you click on him? Melt-worthy.

Of course it is.  I like the way Zev says it better too, but Fenris is very squee as well.

Edit: Zev's "I am yours" is a greeting.  His best ambient comment is "Si Amora."

Since he's an escaped slave I'd find any implied transfer of ownership as vaguely unsettling.

@badpie

What you said.

It's like in DA:O, romances are great, has good background and what not, but with this one, so much more depth (minus Sebastian). They're all messed up in their own ways and experiences, it's not always about love and happiness and there's a potential of not being able to complete the romance.

Said in bedroom voice, it doesn't exactly carry that connotation.

There's that potential in DAO as well (Hi Alistair and Morrigan and unhardened Leliana).  I personally think the DAO romances have more depth because there's more buildup.  DA2 gives you the squee moments for sure, though.

Agree to all of this.  Fenris and Zevran...methinks my characters are pervy elf fanciers...though it's probably just me. :P
I agree, I like the way Zevran says it better, but Gideon Emery's voice is audital bliss as well.

You know...I did wonder about that.  But I think it's been discussed here before that as much as he hated his life as a slave, he does have some trouble breaking the mentality in certain respects.  Probably not healthy, but no one's arguing he doesn't have problems.  That's what Hawke is there for, to give him a kick in the pants, literally or figuratively.

I guess, with a romanced Hawke, he learns he can give of himself freely.  My theory anyway.

It carries that implication, because it's not as if it's a minor aspect of Fenris' character.

...okay, to you maybe.  I know some have said they got that feeling from him wearing Hawke's crest.  But he is allowed to have a lover and to choose to be with that person, and to express that feeling of attachment.  The very fact that he says it of his own accord gives me the opposite impression.  Do you s'pose he ever lovingly said "I am yours" to Danarius?

I'm sorry, but you can't ignore major - as in almost the entirety of it - aspects of a character's background, motivation, mindset, worldview, and especially in this case relative sense of self-worth because of the tone of voice he expresses something in.

I imagine he indicated his willingness to submit to Danarius in other ways, yes.

You seem to think I'm equating the relationships, I am not.

It's more likely to have been the other way round, Danarius would say something akin to 'you're mine and don't forget it!' [said in a very menacing voice I imagine] -- so for Fenris to freely say that is a huge deal

I think that's what makes it mean so much to be honest.  Giving of yourself freely is freedom as opposed to being "owned."  It's a different mentality behind the words.  I wouldn't see him ever having a problem saying something like that to Hawke.  Because that is freedom, his choice.  He is hers and she is his.  There's no negative connotation to it.  Might bring up some things if Hawke had said "you're mine" to him, but again there is a certain element of delicious freedom he probably feels of being able to say that to someone and enjoying it.

But also "I am yours" in this context has nothing to do with his past.  It's just...something you say I guess.  I don't think it warrants reading too much into to really.

LOL  Okay.  He was brainwashed- do you see him as brainwashed in the midst of the Hawke romance?  I've only played it as rivalry, so the very idea is funny to me.

I don't see this as "ignoring" any part of his character.  You get squick from the line, I don't.  Like I said, if anything I see it as evidence of the opposite of what you're claiming it to mean.

I don't think it does, though.  Much like Zevran (whose being a slave was ALSO a major thing), it's not so much an ownership thing as all are choosing to stay with his lover; it's an affection thing.  Morrigan says it as well and is most definitely not implying that the warden owns her.

I just think it's a phrase that is supposed to be loving and show an emotional commitment.  It's said in a loving manner.

This thread - and others - read into things all the time.  It's only the potentially unpleasant or complicated things that there's ever even any debate about whether or not reading into it is appropriate.

Considering he's a fictional character and DG could have had him say any number of things there means to me that it was chosen for a reason.  The Amell crest, too.
