At first I thought it could be information about his family and/or Danarius's location or something. ...But he somehow got the location from the dead slaver, and besides, information is not generally stored in guarded chests. I can't think of any physical objects they could have used as bait if he was a slave.

But now I'm going to believe that he was expecting Danerius's head on a platter.  :innocent:

Who was it that mentions that Fenris and Hawke are like a knight and her lady? Merrill?! Isabela? Anyone know? I swear I heard it in banter!
It was adorable. Yes, he is like a knight wearing his lover's favour *squee*

Is that in the banter?  If so that's sweet.  If not, it should be.  Posted Image

As for what was in the chest.... hm... I...I don't know.... Now it's going to bother me.

Gah, looking at Knight and Lady bring up no resuts in the talktable (that is, no results about a banter like that).  Since banters aren't neatly laid out, is there anything else to go by?

Because that's who they are, and how their minds work. Fenris - given his memory wipe - can only relate things to his time as a slave.

I apologize, wall of text incoming!:o

I think I tried to make this argument before, but probably made it poorly or incoherently.  Hey, I should get points for persistence!

Memory is integral to the formation of identity.  Experience is a composite of memory, and the eventual understanding or reflection that comes from returning to that memory. Conversely, it is in this network of memories and experiences that our worldview takes shape. There is a reason why nostalgia colors everything with emotion.  Our thoughts, actions, and relationships are tied together by these experiences and memory is what allows us to make the connections.

Fenris’s trouble comes for more than just loosing memory and thusly only having the cruelty of slavery being his only memory.  Fenris’s trouble is derived from the existing person that was pre-memory loss being irreconcilable to the person that he is post-memory loss.   The person that Fenris was before then exists in a existence that is stagnant and in stasis just out of grasp.  It is this person that possesses a strong tie to family and is the reason why he has that need to put down roots.

His quest “Alone”  seems to hint at this subtlely and allude to this stagnant duality.  The person that Varania describes (Leto) seems noble, and self-sacrificing in that he gave up his identity to free his mother and sister from slavery.  This is why I think the bitterness, the hate for magic that he clings to  is so debilitating.  Leto and Fenris are not the same people and yet they are at the same time  (which is why I think Fenris’s reaction to Ander’s possession is so very ironic). Varania’s revelation sickens him to think that he asked for the very things he feels cursed him. In that instance, he finally comes come to grips with both personas in particular, the one does possess memories of pleasant things like family, love and friendship and the other persona who has inexperienced intolerable cruelty and degradation.  This is why he lashes out at Hawke about being alone and if Hawke is in love with him, he/she can try try to help in that reconcillation by reminding him that he is not.  I imagined that in order for him to cope with those lyrium marking he had to focus the onus of his bitterness on external forces (i.e slavery, magic and Danarius).  This is why I will ALWAYS let Varania live because this is something that NEEDS to happen for Fenris.  My hope is that he will evetually achieve parity with both personas.

That’s what I think anyways. Meeples..sorry, I really hope that made sense...^_^

Since my character is a male Hawke, I just had the most absurd mental image of Hawke in shining armour and Fenris in a princess gown. A+.

You know when you take Fenris with you to meet Flemeth , she tells him "the chains are broken but are you truly free?"
And he's not.But Danarius is not the problem. Fenris is trapped in a world of anger and bitterness and has no clue how to get out of it.
I think he wants something from hawke ,not just somebody to help with the slavers.
Maybe a way to move on , it can be love , friendship , just respect etc...

So wonderfully said.  And you totally made me flashback to college and my philosophy studies.

I totally see him wanting to reconcile what he was with he has become and simply not being able to.  Without the memories, he has no way of knowing.  He can imagine there was something more there, something better than the memories he does possess, but he isn't certain for sure.  I believe that is why when he finds out his sister is alive, he makes so much effort to reconnect with her.

And suddenly I have the overwhelming urge to create a glam-rock soundtrack for all future DA2 playthroughs.

Fenris: There comes a time when you have to turn to face the tiger.
*cue music* Risin' up, back on the street...

Cracky fanmixes are the awesome.  Every game needs good montage music if you ask me!

I can't find anything like it in the talktable unfortunately.  Then again, there's only so much reading of the talktable I can do before my eyes start to cross!

I think he wants something from hawke ,not just somebody to help with the slavers.

I think he does. Their first ever conversation is indicative of that, if you pick certain options. At that time it's not nessesaraly Hawke he ties his hopes with, but it's there.

One of my runs with slightly mistrustful always on the run mage (rival) the talk went like this:

Fenris: Tell me, have you never wanted to return to Ferelden?
Hawke: I've started a life here.
Fenris: And that's it? You leave it behind so easily?
Hawke: You survive and you move on. What else do you want? (<-female vo delivery there is amazingly good. Kind of heartbreaking really)
Fenris: Something different... so should you. I apologize. Your life is your own. It simply shoulds so... familiar.

:crying: That part made me reload and do the scene over the first time I got it.  Fenris sounded so troubled and confused there.
